[Official Discussion] Huawei Ascend 2.1 - 2.2 Firmware Upgrade (Info updated as received!)

I would love to have multi touch. Another thing, that would kill on this phone, would be the ability to have app2d... It would make it so that we could have more space, with less compromizing of quality, and speed... I heard 2.2 allows this?!
Yes Android 2.2 Froyo supports moving apps to the SDcard via an app called "Apps2SD"

We can actually do this now with the Ascend if you install the custom ROM called Icarus 1.1

It is Android 2.1 (not 2.2) but comes with an app that automatically moves apps to the SDcard. Very kewl.

And no you can't do it with the "stock" Android 2.1 that the Ascend comes with (sorry) but installing Icarus 1.1 is not that hard and really worth it (well until the official 2.2 comes out ... that MAY be better ... knock on wood).

Switch to Icarus, it's a2sd is better then the Froyo one. It moves all apps, whether they are designed for it or not.

did anyone ever figure out the mms fix on the unofficial 2.2 upgrade? I had 2.1 rooted and switched to 2.2 and it was a little faster and better then 2.1, only thing tht sucked was the keyboards were trash and I had to go manually download the swype keyboard from the website. Also I use mms a few times a week so not having it jst made me go back to 2.1. I know this is cheapest android but Im tired of the lag and it being so slow. Even if I overclock it to 600 mhz its slow. I got the phone from a friend for 100 basically new. And have been playing around with it and i like it and itd be perfect if the official 2.2 dropped already. Im very impacient and I dont want to have to go get a different phone. Huawei needs to just release the update.

What is the difference between our Ascends and the Tapout edition, as far as internals go? Is it the exact same phone, or have they upgraded the hardware inside the phone in the Tapout edition?

same specs and all, just a different color and 2 backs with different designs. Plus they trying to get there money back from all the rebates they gave out on the regular ascend...

The processor in your phone is what we call an SoC - system on (a) chip - it's actually a collection of several cores (including cpu and 2d/3d graphics, digital signal processing, memory management and more).

In effect, the SoC is similar to a chunk of your PC's motherboard, all on a single chip.

The idea that any phone out there has a separate gpu is something the news blogs like to talk about but in truth the idea is less real than the tooth fairy. :)

Your phone contains the Qualcomm MSM 7200A - I've only got specs for it in Chinese (Mandarin actually), if I can find the same in English, I'll post back.

Meanwhile - this substantiates which processor your phone has, as most sites tend to get it wrong -

QDevNet - Device Database | See all the latest mobile devices running Qualcomm Adreno GPUs | Qualcomm Developer Network

Note by the title that your phone has an Adreno GPU built-in - that's the name that Qualcomm gave to the graphics core technology they bought from AMD.

Not too shabby! :)

Hope that helps!

someone i trust o n here (i think gmash or someone) mentioned it has a gpu. i havent looked though.
It was the ascend 2, that Blast gt mentioned has the gpu, which I think I brought up somewhere. I think people are getting confused between the ascend 2 and the tapout edition. Afaik the tapout is the same phone except for having 2.2

Thanks for the info. It was Issac, the creator of icarus, and the guy who got cm7 onto the ascend, who said the lack of a gpu was holding our phones back. I figured if anybody would know it would be him. Now I'm confused.

He may have simply meant that the gpu core included is not up to the task at hand in the discussion you were having.

Or, he may have been simply mistaken - a lot of guys at XDA who are otherwise geniuses erroneously believe that some phones have separate gpus when they don't.

Also - your phone is listed as an ARM11 type, but it's specifically an ARMv6 on the cpu side - another limitation.

Not that I'm bragging - my ARM7/8 variant is already about at the point of obsolescence (and my built-in Adreno 200 certainly is) - that's just the way it goes with processors.

Like you, I'll be extending the phone's overall lifetime with custom roms, but eventually, limits are reached - then, just smile that you've tweaked every bit possible out it and enjoy!!

I would love to update my ROM to 2.2. Does anyone have the new ROM yet? An overclocked and optimized ROM from a trusted source would be very welcomed also. Cyanogen 7 is not available for the Ascend http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices and Icarus has issues. Will someone to post a link to the new Huawei Ascend TAPOUT ROM? Cheers, M

pretty sure that phone isnt out for another cpl days.

ok. atm i am un aware of a new froyo rom. the only one i have found for the ascend is the c8500 port here.... http://androidforums.com/ascend-all-things-root/302725-froyo-rom-ascend-froyo-2-2-1-a.html

as for cm7, there IS in fact a rom. follow my guide to install it.... here.... http://androidforums.com/ascend-all-things-root/309499-how-install-cm6-7-comprehensive.html

and the tapout rom hasn't been pulled yet to my knowledge.

cm7 is gingerbread 2.3. kicks ass. but no mms

only full working rom for the ascend is icarus 1.1.... here... http://androidforums.com/ascend-all-things-root/287987-how-install-icarus-1-1-isaacj87.html

any questions, please search first then ask. pm me if you want too. have fun with the assend.

From what I've read, the ARMv6 is the reason our phones won't do flash, because Adobe requires minimum ARMv7. Is this correct? People are constantly asking about this, and I don't want to give out any bad information. As always, thanks for taking an interest in our humble little phones and checking in on us once in a while.

That's correct (about Flash, not about your phone being humble - not too long ago it would have been considered beyond state of the art).

The confusion was caused by Adobe - for months on end they promised that they'd support Flash on the ARMv6 - and then silence ensued. When full Flash finally came out, it was with a bunch of phones being dictated to never get an official Froyo or Flash - all of the ARMv6 ones were on that list.

And hey, I'll post here for as long as you cats will tolerate my 2 cents. :) ;)

I was just in the corporate metropcs store (citrus heights, ca) to get a replacement phone and the tech who fixes the phones told be that when the tapout comes out we will get an over the air update for sure. Thats as of today 4/4/11 :)

If this is true, it would be chilly. If not, then eff them, and eff tapout. I say, they sold out, and decided to go the same route as walmart, and support a horribly violent sport... If you are into MMA, then whatever, still a bloody, pointless sport...
