What's going on guys...

Just like the title says, I picked up my X a few days ago. I'm new to the smartphone league, but am tech savy.

I was hopeing that some of you could help me get this thing fired up properly with some must have apps, handy apps, cool features, tips for battery life (aside from screen brightness lol) etc, what all these different platforms are like blur, or the new leak? rooting? all of this is foreign to me and I don't really understand it when I come across it and how to get it or if I even need it.

Just trying to make the most out of my phone and unleash its true capabilities. Please if you have anything to add, feel free to drop your comments in opposed to just reading and moving on like some of us always do on forums ;)

Thanks so much everyone

Welcome! There is a ton of great stuff that can be done with this device. If you like to tinker, you will find a never ending amount of stuff you can do.
You can add widgets, replace the ui (launcher) ETC. all the way to installing full custom ROM's.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, this is the place to do that!
Let the fun begin!

My suggestions are:
-Go Launcher(or Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher)
-Quick Settings(makes changing commonly-used settings so much easier)
-Circle Launcher(an App Launcher, not a real launcher)
-Tune In Radio(radio stations all over the world)

You can always explore rooting and ROMs if you wish, of course. I never really push this but it is pretty cool stuff. I like being rooted but ROMs aren't high on my wish list.

Oh yeah lol Coming from the accolade that, love is an understatement ;)
I was literally one of the only people I knew without a smartphone! Now...the fun and having everything at the tip of my finger begins.

I appreciate the link, I skimmed through it on my phone at work...but am going to take a good look at it now.

Yeah I am that guy that loves to snoop around, add new fun stuff and beef up my gadgets, find out all of the details and know all of the ins and outs.

What exactly is rooting your phone and what are Roms.

ROMS, rooted lol...all not so clear to me. How do they help and what are they or what do they do?

Rooting basically "unlocks" your phone to do certain things. One basic thing is taking screen captures. You can take a photo of your screen to share with others.
You can also change how fast the phone works and change the voltage it uses.

ROMs are custom 'operating systems' that people develop. They get rid of useless crap and make tweaks here and there to make the phone work better and faster. You can also screw your phone up if you don't do things right.

I wouldn't worry much about rooting and ROMing at this point. Just enjoy customizing what you can right now. Play around with Launchers and apps and have fun.

You made an awesome choice. ;-) I've had the X since release date, & still love it. I'm typically one to jump from gadget to gadget to have the newest, shiniest, best new toy. I have to say..I do not anticipate giving up the X for quite some time. It simply just does *everything*.

Give us an idea of the kind of apps you might use - there's definitely something for everybody out there.

Some of my faves...

Kindle for Android
Pandora
Go Launcher
Angry Birds
Car Home (for the car dock, which is awesome)
Gesture Search
QuickPic
Vignette (awesome camera app)
Evernote

& so many more.

And check out the new App store on Amazon - they give away a new (free) app every day - some pretty good ones so far.

I never re-rooted after Froyo (Android's 2.2 release). I've never really found a good reason to...and I'm scared. lol

Loving the X even more now that I have my wifi Xoom - I can tether the Xoom easily via BT. Match made in heaven. :)

Thanks for the info. Rooting sounds a little more basic and it seems ROMS are basically what I thought of them to be. Pretty much custom scripts and commands you enter into the...I guess OS (operating system) <shrugs>

I'm just basically looking to make this thing the fastest and last the longest (battery that is).

Yeah I am definitely loving it thus far ;) That says a lot though to want to keep the X over anthing else to come (for now).

I guess it's kind to tough to say what kind of apps I'd like to use...I guess I'll just have to browse around and see what is what and dl as I see fit <shrugs> Thanks for the list though.

I already went launcherpro and it's a far superior platform.

What is froyo and how do I go about getting it? I'm assuming it's the upgraded version of the X? In my setting/about phone/ I have version 2.2.1. Would it be safe to assume I am up to date with the newest version and don't need froyo as that is something for users who bought the X when it first came out at 2.1?

Is Froyo (Android's 2.2) installed on new Droid x phones or is it something aftermarket ? How can you tell or where do you look to see what phone has ?

I'm new to the phone, BUT, not being cluless, I would assume all of the new X's are currently running froyo, hence the phone info listing the version as 2.2.1. Click your menu button, settings, bottom of list...about phone.

My guess :)

Someone more knowledgeable maybe chime in?

I know you're all tired of questions about rooting from noobs, but i swear i looked around and no one had a simple answer for this, so:

I'm considering rooting my phone, I want to play around with it as is for a while, stock os seems pretty okay to me, but... what I'd really like to do is create different system profiles which completely change my settings, and have it dedicated to a widget I can toggle from the home screen. What I'm thinking is:

toggle for a "home" profile-- I have easy access to a charger and my home wifi, so I want to crank up the performance settings, my apps update constantly, turn on wifi, up the screen brightness some, that kind of thing-- all from one button.

Then maybe have a profile for when I'm at school-- I have access to wifi but don't want to crank out the performance settings since that battery still needs to last me all day. Maybe the apps update a little more frequently but not all the time.

Then one profile for walking around where it goes into battery saver mode-- my apps only update every few hours, screen is at its darkest, etc.

If I root the phone is there a way to get those kind of custom profiles easily accessible? From what I've gathered, it's possible in theory, but I have yet to hear anyone talk about it...

thanks guys.

Sure...

Took pic, then went to gallery and opened the pic, tried clicking the menu button/quick upload/chose to send to my email
and
Also tried menu button/share/chose to to my email

I do have my email set up correctly, so there are no issues there. Do I "have" to send it to my gmail account and not my comcast.net account? I assume this would be no issue...

Now...remember I mentioned I was having trouble uploading my pictures that I took via sending them to my laptops email.

Well...3 days later they just popped up and are coming in by the handfull. Almost if there's been a block on my outbox that just opened up. So, I emailed 2 people through my phone today and did not see these msgs pop up in my outbox until just recently. Assuming these were not sent out for whatever reason, I went ahead and did a test run.

Had my gf email me from her phone to my phone, no problem. I received the email promptly and then went ahead and hit reply. Typed a small msg and hit send. Showed up in my outbox, but not in the sent box and she has yet to receive it say 15minutes later. I also did the same thing sending an email to my laptop address (not a picture this time), and that as well has yet to show up?

WTH is going on here? My phone seems to be seriously lagged with sending emails? Is it possible I got one of the X's that was part of the bad batch? I've heard it's a bit hit or miss with the phone and you can get a crapper or one that works fine.

Anyone... s.o.s

Is it possible my phone needed a reboot? I "did" just get it, drained the battery completely till it shut off, charged it full, turned it on and have been using it since. Maybe it needed a reboot? I say this because it shut down earlier today by getting to low on battery, was off completely, charged it up then turned back on and what do you know ,emails started popping up.
