Root Broken Screen - Anyway to un-root/un-mod it?

Hi guys,

Took my phone out of my pocket earlier to find the screen is knackered. Glass case(digitiser?) is in pretty good condition, no cracks, one slight scratch.

The problem it seems is with the AMOLED/SLCD screen underneath. The screen is black apart from two very slight hairline "cracks" near the bottom. My guess is that the phone was in some way damaged through torsion/bending whilst in my pocket.

Also as some here will know, it's rooted, runnin GV1.8 etc.
I ran a NAND backup last night so no new info to worry about going missing (and when I get it sorted I guess I'll just restore it from that backup).

So, is there anyway, without a working screen, to reverse the rooting/modding I've applied before sending it off.

Secondly does anyone have any advice for what I'm about to go through (both unrooting and also the HTC customer service process)? Or any suggestions for getting it repaired without going through HTC.

No "buy a case" comments please I already have one, but I lost it a few days back after tacking it off! Grrr.

I've posted here as I guess my first concern is to try and get it back to "stock".

Ouch, bad luck!

Unfortunately (for you, not for me) I don't have any experience of the repair process. But if you do send it back to HTC and want to unroot, the answer is an RUU (see the rooting FAQ). As this is just a Windows program, you should be able to connect the phone to a PC, run the RUU and job done. Worst case you may have to connect in fastboot mode, but I'm sure one of us could provide a recipe for doing that blind.

Main thing is getting the right RUU for your phone. If it was originally unbranded you can find a link to the latest RUU in this post from SUroot. Otherwise shipped-roms (Index of /shipped/Bravo/) has a selection for different network-branded handsets, but downloads from there can be unreliable, so check the size of the downloaded file to make sure it's all there. With any luck someone will be along with better links for these.

And I hope yours isn't an Orange handset, as I have a feeling that RUUs for them are not available.

Thanks for the reply. I believe I've already downloaded the RUU from that link/ Well, I've downloaded the H3G RUU (newer one). That is "Three" right? I may need someone to help me out with the bling navigation of menus for CWM etc...

It may not be worth the effort as I will not be covered by warranty (broken LCD is not classed as in warrantly) but I sould like to minimise any costs they think of applying relating to software shenanigans.

So, if anyone does fancy giving me the receipe to blind navigation, go for it. I will love you loooooooong time.

H3G sounds like "3" to me (Hutchinson 3G). Unless you have a goldcard the RUU should refuse to run if it's the wrong one.

If not warranty (and I suspected it might not be) it may be worth getting an estimate from them, then seeing if there is a reliable 3rd party who will do it cheaper.

Anyway, my comment about fastboot was because I remember SUroot recently suggesting this for running an RUU where a phone does not have Sense. That was in this thread, which also discusses another way of doing it if usb connection does not work. So to get into fastboot mode without looking at the screen, what you need to do is:

* power on while pressing the "volume down" button
* wait a little
* press the power button to select fastboot mode

Fastboot is the first item in the bootloader menu, so all you need to do is get into the bootloader then press the power button to select it.

Then you shouldn't need to do anything else on the phone, just run the RUU on the PC with the phone connected by usb.

At least that's the theory - I always add the disclaimer that I've never run an RUU, so am just summarising what I've understood from this forum.
