update problems

ok i have a few questions, the first,is rom update and firmware two diffrent things?just got the htc hero on orange uk and tried to download the rom update for orange and it said my phone wasnt applicable, fair enough if its up to date but then some applications say i need a updated firmware,if this is a diffrent thing, how do i update it as there is no link on the actual phone as would be on other phones and cant find any such link on the site to download it? any help appreicated
cheers

If apps are telling you that you need an updated firmware then you are out of luck.
The HTC update currently available purely updates the HTC specific areas of the software, namely speeding up Sense (well worth it tbh).

You will need to wait for HTC to release a new ROM with Sense on Android OS 2.1 before you can use such apps.

Or try a 2.0/2.1 custom ROM..

Right.so that means that firmware and Rom are one and the same? Will look into the updated Rom.though,as i said earlier, when I tried for the update and put in my serial number I was told my phone wasn't applicable.does this mean my phone is up to date or is there some way around this?
It could mean you have an unlocked phone.. Or you entered your serial number wrongly.
You still be able to download it regardless of what firmware you have on your phone at the moment.
