I don't want to mess with it. I don't know how, and I don't want to half know what I'm doing and brick my phone. Anybody in the Kansas City area want to do it for me? I will pay you like $50 or something.

Mainly I just want to root so I can use the wireless tethering, so I can use it as a hotspot for a laptop when I am in Las Vegas next month.

Dude...Listen......Don't be intimidated! It is not hard at all! I was completely unfamiliar with Android and rooted my phone. Everything you need is in the rooting for dummies thread. You will come to find it's really a breeeze. Plus you'll have done it hands on and you would have learned! :D then you can flash whatever roms you want. You really don't do much! the phone does everything for you! You just tell it what to do :D

Plus, you will be sooooo much better off doing it yourself. You will understand the process and be able to flash different ROM's/Kernels etc. yourself. Don't sell yourself short, you can do it.

I would want to do it but I read a quite a few threads about all the problems people are having and hear stories hear and there about ppl bricking their phone. I'll try to give it a more intense read though and see if I can figure it out.

I've not once read or heard of someone bricking their phone while rooting it.....In all honesty bwillie, it's pretty hard to brick your phone, you'd pretty much having to be REALLY trying to brick it to do so.

Rooting is probably the easiest thing to do as far a after stock life goes. Make sure to download HTC sync, and then delete Sync only leaving the sync drivers (so the phone can communicate with the computer). Other than that follow the guide, its really overated.
It's when you start flashing roms and other things is were the brick possibility comes into play.

+1 you REALLY REEEEAAAAALLLLLLYYYYYY hafta try hard to brick your phone. Many threads you see that say "bricked phone" are quite simple fixes that make most users have a facepalm moment.... i know ive had a couple facepalm moments, but youre very unlikely to permanaently brick your phone.

p.s. - nandroid backups... do them, dont question it LoL be like Nike, and just do it

I agree with what everyone has said here, but I will throw a little balance into the mix. These phones come locked down for a reason. If you don't read, read, read and cover your bases, there is great potential to break things. Can you brick the phone doing something wrong? Yes. Are you likely to end up in an unrecoverable situation? Not likely. But the potential is still there, and it's very easy to accidentally lose everything, and have to start over. Just be careful. I'm not saying this to discourage you. I'm just saying this so that you understand that once you have root, you have the ability to do anything on the phone, which is great, but that also means you can break things. That being said, to understand this responsibility, you're better off if you root it yourself. If you have someone do it for you, it would be like someone taking your drivers test for you, then handing you the keys to a car, and expecting you to know how to drive. Just read and ask questions whenever you need to. We're all more than willing to help.

For what it's worth, I'm in the KC area, but seriously, just follow the "rooting for dummies" thread. Two months ago, I didn't know squat about rooting a phone or flashing a ROM. And if you want to flash a ROM (and you will, often, after rooting, because it's awesome) then you need to read up on stuff anyway.

The Root Bible has the following commandments

1. Thou shalt read
2. Thou shalt wipe cache and dalvik before flashing anything
3. Covet nandroid backups

I would say covet the wimax backup;), all other nandroid backups are there just to save time.

I agree with everyone that it is super simple. I had my phone since launch day and never had the thought of rooting it. Well 2 weeks ago I just got bored and said screw it, lets root. I had no idea what I was doing at all! I read everything on this forum, the other forums, youtube videos, and came back to the rooting for dummies. Can't beat it. I did run into some issues with my Mac, so I pulled out my old HP and it was cake. Follow directions and you will be golden. That whole week all I did was flash every rom possible, seriously like 30 times haha. Now a few days ago I dropped my phone and shattered the screen. So I got to learn how to un-root as well lol. Now waiting for new device which is 7-10 days away to root and play again!

Read, read, and read it again. Take notes to refer back to during the process. Its really not that hard but being prepared will reduce your stress level. I have rooted my Hero and am running Cyanogen Mod 7 on it. I rooted my EVO and just did a nandroid backup before I flash 7 on it. It looks intimidating thats for sure but if your geeky enough to root your phone then your geeky enough to want to learn what your doing.
Its like my camaro or mustang I want to mod them to give me more performance, however I don't want someone to do it for me cause then I wont know how to fix it if something goes wrong.

Sorry for the dumb question, but what is all of this about flashing roms. I don't get what the hell that is all about. As for root, I'm about to make the plunge, I'm just really scared I'll lose 4G. That is the whole point I am wanting to root to use 4G hotspot.

I just rooted my phone (EVO) and my brother's phone last week. I have never rooted before and was a little unsure whether to do it or not. Just follow the instructions in the sticky and everything will work. Also, if you plan on doing the wireless tether get the version 11. There is a link to it in the guide. I just stuck to the basics... rooted EVO, installed wireless tether, installed the ad blocker app, and installed setcpu. Did not do any custom roms and stuff... don't want to get too far ahead of myself.

Good luck!

A rom is kind of like your operating system. A lot of them based on HTC Sense kind of look and feel the same...think of it as running different versions of Windows.

Not all roms have 4g hotspot hacked from what I understand but cyanogen mod does. It is not based on HTC Sense, so it will look and feel quite a bit different. Now wireless tether is a market app that is commonly used but I don't really know much about how well it works with 4g.
