Anyone excited for this game?

I tend to get excited about new MMOs since I am looking for something good enough (end game) to take me away from WoW, which I always seem to quit and then come back to for a handful of months after a new expack comes out.

Of course, it is being made by BioWare, the makers of the best star wars games, IMO. I have faith they can pull off something spectacular.

Anyhow, the game looks promising. They seem to not be going crazy with graphics, which should be promising to get people with all sorts of budgets playing. One of the biggest plagues of modern MMOs is needing a $1000 rig to play the game smoothly. There are simply too few people willing to invest in a great gaming machine. I'd rather the graphics suffer a little than have a dead community.

For those that haven't checked it out, here's a link!

Totally pumped! Been a member of STOR since first announced in 08....
And can I say.....

WE NEED A FRIKKIN RELEASE DATE!

I'd love a release date too, but I would rather have this thing come out polished. A lot of times I find, with MMOs especially, that the team announces a release date and ends up pushing to reach the deadline, only to give consumers a product that is half-baked. The project cost is rumored at $80 million, so I am sure they are putting in every effort to make this game last.

True that. I have every faith in Bioware. They never rush perfection. I heard that's the reason they turned down kotor 2...... that game was rushed by obsidian and you could tell, still loved it though.

I am still worried about the competition. WoW has become something that I don't think anyone ever dreamed it would be. Subscriber base continues to grow with every expansion. This new game HAS to be appealing to the non-hardcore players, or it will fail. I am not talking not be on top (I think it would taking somewhat of a miracle to topple WoW), I am talking staying viable. Look at everything outside of WoW. It all ends up taking the path of free to play with microtransactions keeping the game afloat.

The problem is that everyone that plays/played WoW ends up using it as a comparison tool when trying a new game. More often than not you'll hear that X game sucks and WoW is better because it's more polished. They don't care that WoW has had 7 years to polish their game while game X is brand new. I often think that people go out of their way to find something wrong with a new launch just because it's new. People fail to realize that not having 12 million subscribers doesn't mean that the game sucks.

100% agree with you. Unfortunately, for a successful MMO, all that matters is what the players think. Every single player can have a skewed view, but if people are paying, we get more content. For that reason, new MMOs have it 100x harder than Blizzard did when they rolled out WoW. They didn't have their current WoW to compete with. Blizz is supposedly working on a new MMO. I am interested to see if WoW stomps even their own new MMO into the ground... it has for SOOOO many other MMOS.

There have been plenty of MMOs that I enjoyed at launch. LOTRO, Conan, Guild Wars, to name a few. But these games are no fun at all without a vast player base. I personally am tired of WoW, but I find myself coming back simply because there is a player base there to support me. It's no fun hopping onto a server with five people online when the only things left to do are kill creatures that take five times that number to down. The tasks within the game have literally become impossible to acheive due to a lack of players.

I should also add that I, along with others I am sure, am getting tired of buying these damn games only for them to fail a few months or years later. You are seeing more and more people wanting to get into betas just so they can see if they even like the game (without having to buy it first). They all feel jaded and don't want to invest their money and time into thigns doomed for failure.

I have heard q4 2010 and earlier. Supposedly it was expected to have been released nearly a year ago in terms of initial expectations. We will know the time is drawing nearer when more people are allowed into the beta. That's generally where they get a stress test on the servers. Before that I will keep my excitement to a minimum.

The MMO market is so hard to crack if you are a newer game as lordofthereef says "Everyone compares is to WoW". The good thing about SWTOR is that they already have a huge following so integration should be easier.

Personally I can't wait as I am a recovering WoW addict and managed not to pick it up for nearly 6 months. True most nights I shake like a pooing dog but I am sure SWTOR will quence my needs. Roll on release date.

I finally caught myself up with all of the videos the bioware has released. Game looks great, but I said that about plenty of MMOs that are now struggling so bad they have become free to play, hoping on microtransactions to stay afloat. (I still don't quite understand how LOTRO wasn't successful, I thought, and still think, it was fantastic, just no player base)

I will need to build a new rig for this game. Mine hasn't been updated for over two years, so its definitely time. Problem is I do very little PC gaming anymore (seems all PC gamers get anymore are MMOs :( ), so this thing will be built solely for this game. I'd have a lot riding on hopes of this not being a flop.

What modern MMOs are you talking about that needs a $1000 rig to play it?

The most computer intensive MMO out there would probably be AoC, and they are even reasonable.

Most games no longer have much "massive" about them, as they are for the most part over instanced, and completely separated scenario style games.

As far as the WoW comparisons mentioned, WoW was (is) a compilation of the best parts of older games, with a few new sprinkles of gamer dust on them, the new generation has turned that game into the end all be all.

MMOgamer mentality is much different then it was in the past, so if you are someone that started during the beginning years (saw someone mention AO) then most of these games will offer no depth, and SWG is no different.

The graphics are very 2004ish, yes to get people with crap machines to be able to play, but it is 2011, almost 2012 when the game releases... lets move on.

character creation is awful

if you like stories and quests, it'll be fun for you.. if you like pvp and massive game depth (outside of story, i mean character building and questing) don't even think this game will tickle you happy at all

the game 100% comes from the spawn of WoW and Warhammer online

annyywayys...

i'd save your money for a while

and honestly, the minimum on this will prob be a low low end duel core , 1 -2 gb ram and a 512 mb video card, maybe even a 256mb card

a modern upgrade would be overkill in a major way

If you are in a raid with lots going on and you want graphics maxed, you are going to dump $1000 into your system. Last thing I played was rift and it ran pretty poorly on my 3 year old rig when there was a butt-ton of stuff going on. Same goes for FFXIV, though that was beta.
