Help Unified Gmail inbox...just not possible?

Is a unified Gmail inbox just not possible on the Droid?

I really miss that from my BB, a unified inbox where I could see all my mail from all my accounts listed together, and read and reply to it from the respective accounts.

Is this just not possible due to some limitation of the Google Gmail system, or ?

If it's possible, I'd pay for an app that would do that...

You can set up gmail from PC to get your other accoutns email and also when you reply to reply from that account. I believe you go to setting then account on PC. thats what i do and have 3 emails coming into my gmail.

My understanding is that you only have one reply-from option per email account, so combining multiple email accounts into one gmail account won't get me the functionality I want...I don't want the reply-from for my multiple gmail accounts changing to a single email account.

Hmmm...no one running any of the 2.1 variants has mentioned this. I'll ask on one of those threads.

I just tested my gmail account that I have 'POP'ing a bunch of other mailboxes: It looks like in the Android GMail interface you can't select which out-going email address you use. This is unfortunate, since I can set that via the web interface in GMail

"You can add more than one Google Account on your phone (such as your home and work accounts)..."

I never bothered to check if this was also stated in the 2.0/2.0.1 flash but it sounds positive

This is one of the things I hate the most about the gmail app. Everyone was so excited about a unified email app with 2.0 but then they don't let you have unified gmail. Not enough to make me go back to my blackberry, but still annoying.

You can add as many email accounts as you want, but each has its own inbox, there's no option to view all emails in one inbox. You have to check each inbox separately. I have four Gmail accounts and get tired of doing the inbox shuffle to view/respond to messages in all four of them....

"The upgraded Gmail app also supports multiple accounts, so you can get mail from your work, personal, and moonlighting Gmail accounts in one interface." (boldtype added by me)

I think keeping the interfaces separated would be best for me, however, my major concern is if the contacts get merged in either the current and / or new ROM that we're waiting on....

I'd prefer it if each account could keep separate ... well, everything, actually!

I have 1 GMail / Google account with my real name, one with an alias (use for online places, like here (You didn't *really* think my name was John Galt, now didja?) and a third 'email' through my Google domain account. I want to be able to check all three (plus a variety of other accounts - a couple at GMX, several at HoTMail, 1 at Yahoo, etc) without compromising any data flow between them - I have them as separate accounts and Id like to keep it that way.

So, I suppose my real question is this: Is there a way to keep 2.1 working like it doe snow, with separate Inboxes, and furthermore, is all the other stuff (tasks / calendar / contacts) also kept separated (firewalled?) from other accounts?

I believe that if you use the email app, not the gmail app, you should be able to get the unified inbox.
