well, had my htc desire in a waterproof pocket while skiing and guess what? the pocket is not so waterproof afterall.

there was 'some' water in the pocket and on the phone when i realized it :(
some = not loads but more than a few drops.

anyway, i dried everything out for a few hours and put in the battery and it did start a few times but the screen was weird colors and the touchscreen not working so good.
waited some more hours and now i get stuck at some sort of boot screen.

is there anything i can do to get past this screen?
to be clear, if i put in the battery, the phone starts on its own and goes to this boot screen.
after a few seconds the screen changes to show 4 or 5 messages of 'cannot find image' or something like that.
the power button and volume buttons don't seem to work at the moment.

now the phone is in a bag of rice and i'll wait for 2 days before i try again.

any and all advice is appreciated, thanks!

as Kibbster said, it will most likely be bad news with the buttons.

As others have mentioned on the boards with problems like this, water is highly corrosive with the internals and even if it 'drys' out, you will most likely have some damage on the internal parts like the contacts for buttons etc..

I wish it was better news im afraid...like Kibbster said, I hope as well its under warrenty or insured and you can get a replacement without them hauling you over the coals as you have water damage..

Here's some positive news! The fact your phone turns on is a good sign so I suggest you let it dry for a week and see what happens. Few weeks ago my sister dropped her Desire in a toilet bowl and at 1st it wudnt turn on so I took everything out to let it dry for a week and that did the trick. Everything works except the volume buttons. I also managed to root her phone and added custom rom which she likes so its all worked out alright. Good luck!

I remember the thread on that...so the volume buttons STILL not working now?

I mean, yea its good the phone 'works' but its never gonna be 100% again :(

Yup I know. At least Its working so hopefully It will last a while. She can upgrade but there is nothing worth getting at the moment. I told my sister to hang on until Pyramid comes out.

maybe a good idea...

though saying that...how are the networks with ending/upgrading contracts? you see I havent had a contract (till now) in over 7 years...and back then you had to return the phone lol

Nah your contract covers the cost of the handset so you're free to put it in your man-drawer when the replacement turns up

If you end contract prematurely, you.have to pay up to its natural end.

Only have to return on a warranty replacement

nice, I hated the contracts of old...having to send the phone back for your upgrade....never did send it back mind you...I mean mine we're bought online so would have to use royal mail to send them back...just always blamed royal mail for 'losing' it hahaha

so check it out!!!
i have had the phone off for a few more days and then put in the battery and BANG, it started up after a little while.
problem was that my battery only lasted 10 seconds so i was not able to fully test things.

then i put the battery in again and i was back where i started, crappy boot screen.

is there something in the phone that keeps memory of the boot screen and then disapates after a day which would explain why it started today.... or?
