Root Rooted, want CM7, don't want to lose 4G

I've rooted my EVO (some time ago) and want to install CM7, but I've read of the risk of losing your 4G by flashing ROMS.

Is there still this risk and how do I prevent it?

Im using CM7 nightly 37 (upgraded from 22) and it says 4g works, im in a non 4g area, so i cant actually tell, but it says it works lol

oh, and do a nandroid b/u with your wimax keys included so that if you change to an aosp rom of any sort that doesnt have 4g, you can restore with no ill effect. But you hafta make sure to select the wimax in amon manually as it doesnt auto select it...

Yep, as long as you have a nandroid backup containing your Wimax keys, you should be golden. But for what it's worth, I don't think I've seen of anyone randomly losing 4G keys while flashing a ROM. There's always a chance that something bad COULD happen, but that's why you should always have at least one backup at all times.

I read a few threads on here where people were suddenly unable to restore certain nandroids, IIRC it was more then one backup too. If this were to happen, is there a way to extract the keys from the nandroid? Or would you just be SOL if something happened?

That sort of thing is usually user error. If not, there's probably not going to be anything wrong with the wimax backup. There are several ways to fix such an issue to, at least, restore wimax, such as moving the wimax.img to another backup, and fixing the md5sum files, etc. Just know that if you lose your wimax keys, and have a bad backup (unlikely), we can probably get it fixed, still. That being said, if you're that paranoid, you can do a manual backup by running this from the terminal emulator:

su
mkdir -p /sdcard/nandroid/RSA-PR-BACKUP
cat /dev/mtd/mtd0 > /sdcard/nandroid/RSA-PR-BACKUP/wimax.img

I got that from here. Don't actually do anything in that thread. I'm just giving credit. Anyway, should you need to restore such a backup, you should be able to follow the instructions here. Really, though, you should be fine if you just make a nandroid backup.

depends on what was causing the issue, you can extract the wimax.img from the nandroid with adb. I saw a thread on xda about restoring keys from a corrupted img. Looks like it can be done HOWEVER you would need to know what your keys were and what your cert was, basically it is a wimax.img template and you plug in your own info if so you would need to copy those things to your lappie.

sidenote, 6 hrs off charger with moderate useage(no different than usual monday activities) and 82% batt left!!!!!!!!!! OMFG!!!!!!! Lovin this new kernel!! Matt, you may also be interested in trying out the BFS kernel in my sig.... not linked yet, but i cant imagine that youd have trouble finding it lol

Yeah I tried bfs once upon a time ago, phone wasn't super happy but I may try again. I'm 8 hours off with decent usage and at 75. I left data on all day though which is a big difference and I usually don't.

I hate constantly switching kernels since my battery life the first 24 hours is hit or miss. It really seems to settle down on my phone a lot after a couple of days/charge cycles. Right now I'm at 59% at 8.5 hours off charger . But then the other day, with a settled SZ 1.0.1 CFS, I was at 20% after 24 hours of use after only being charged to 88% when I took it off the charger.

Depends on what you are looking for bfs typically is better performance though if your screen is off enough you may get better battery. Basically consider cfs more flat line kind of performance and bfs a higher peaks and lower valleys...

Well it's the high peaks and low valleys that piss phones off sometimes. Takes a minute to wake from that low valley, lag etc
