upgrading hdtv to support evo3d

I am wondering is it worth upgrading hdtv to support EVO3D? I have found some good deals at best buy on 3d dlna hdtv, but nothing on HML. Any help on this would be greatly appreciative.

The only person that can answer that is you :) Is the charging feature of MHL worth the new TV? Does the new TV give you additional features you want/need over your existing TV? Can you handle the cost of the new TV?

Having the TV charge your phone while your phone is providing video to the TV is very nice, but only if you plan to use your phone for long periods streaming to your TV.

But MHL is very new tech. You'll probably need to wait some more before a decent selection of TVs supporting MHL come to market.

Best buy has good 3dtv with dlna support and my hdtv needs to be replaced. I just haven't found any top end lcd or plasma supporting mhl. I am going to purchase EVO3d, just want the best set to support it. Reading the threads you will be able to do more than stream video.

Well I believe the Evo 3D supports full HDMI mirroring out of the box. The current Evo recently got this ability through custom kernel hacking. So yes, you can do more than just stream, but MHL is pretty straightforward: it allows you to adapt a microUSB port to an HDMI port, and the device on the HDMI end can charge the phone. Aside from the charging, it works exactly like an HDMI link between phone and TV. As long as the TV supports MHL, you get all the benefits of MHL.

Yeah at the moment, MHL isn't very available, but then again, the Evo 3D isn't available either! I think you're going to have the phone for some while before you'll be able to get the TV with MHL support. We'll see.

Samsung and Sony are part of the MHL Consortium - Samsung typically releases new TVs in late spring, Sony in the fall.

Given there are no Sammy phones with this feature, I wouldn't hold out for them to have an MHL model this year - significant because they're the largest innovating HDTV supplier in North America.

Vizio and Samsung used to slug it out for the top spot - haven't checked lately - but Vizio's firsts this year will be to support the features on their upcoming Android phones, and MHL isn't on the list.

Sorry - I think MHL is a solution without a problem.

So basically there won't be a way to charge and stream until Sony or Samsung produce a tv that supports MHL? or am I not understanding this?

The only feature you won't have is charging while the phone is connected to the TV. When you connect the Evo 3D to a TV without MHL support, it will behave exactly as the current Evo does in terms of ability to do HDMI out and mirroring.

In the videos at CTIA, I could've sworn they had a dual port adaptor that had both a USB and HDMI out. I could be wrong, but for some reason I remember seeing that on one of the videos.

Upgrading your TV to work with your phone. Now THAT is commitment!!! (yes, I know I took it a bit out of context)

Actually, when I first read the thread title, I had that exact reaction...LOL, but more along the lines of, "Wow. Spend $1,500-2,000 on a new 3D TV, just to be compatible with a phone that will likely cost anywhere from $150-200?...Wish I had that kind of expendable cash."

Yep - HDMI only has a power line - it's a small 50 mA, 1/10 that of a USB port - so no charging there.

I also recall the dual-dongle stuff - went looking for someone making such a beast - all I can find in MHL do-dads is stuff coming soon like the MHL-HDMI dongle, and that dually wasn't one of them. (Posted a link or two hereabouts.)

I sure hope they include it in the box, or we're in for about a dozen threads and a lot of confusion when this beast hits.

The way I understand MHL is that it's intended to transfer HD audio/video data and also support charging. So it makes sense to me that it's possible to have the cable split into a flavor of USB (minus the data pins) and HDMI so that you can charge via the USB split while connected to a TV. Or, the data pins can be present on the USB split so in the even the HDMI data is not being used, you can still use the splitter cable to connect to a PC.

Of course this split is not necessary if both phone and TV supported MHL, but while this tech is still in its infancy, such a splitter will be pretty useful. And much cheaper than upgrading your TV :)

Want to correct an earlier post - the Sammy Galaxy S2 will have MHL.

And I'm not arguing against the possibility of a dual-dongle -- just asking where we're supposed to be getting any of these dongles at this stage.

And given how HDMI is wired - that would just leave the power line for USB -- and a need to do that right to avoid ground loops, I should think.

And given that the MHL specs to know any of that is merely a hundred buck, I noticed this - http://www.faqs.org/patents/app/20090248924 - might be interesting to some.
