i want to get a G1 but i have att and do not want to switch my service, if i bought an unlocked htc dream world edition would i have all of the data features like internet email and of coarse the market place?
this is the one i would get from amazon.com in white or black. please tell me if they will work on att with ALL data services.

Having used AT&T in the past IMHO you would be upgrading to Tmobil. There plans are cheaper with more minutes, and the have customer support for the G1. I am not saying they are perfect I know some people have had issues. And AT&T will not give you support on the G1. Some people using other than Tmoble are having issues getting certain features to work. I believe you can even transfer your number, so unless you have a better plan than Tmobile can offer... they have treated me extreamly well over the years.

To make an effort to actually answer your question, you should be able to get an Edge connection for web browsing. As the 3G frequencies on AT&T are different than Tmo, you wont be able to get that. I'm not 100% on the market, but I don't think you're going to have an issue, as long as you're in the US.

no man you are wrong, t-mobile supports 2100 wcdma and 1700 wcdma... so does the G1, i just dont know if you can provision the phone to pick up AT&T's 3G service

i have an unlocked g1 on att and i get access to the market over edge. also att edge is pretty fast on the g1, dare i say as fast as t-mobiles 3g in my area. i had an iphone 3G but came over to the dark side lol.

OK, I really seriously doubt that.

Here are some stats. Here are the download/upload speeds I recorded a couple of days ago on my G1, using the Speedtest app:

Home WiFi: 4479/355
3G: 914/134
Edge: 179/37

ok and that is based off of t-mobiles edge...so im failing to see your point, where is att edge vs t-mobile 3g?

and i said in my area...not yours.

You are the one that alleged that your att edge is faster than T-mo 3g, so kindly provide some actual speed test stats for your att edge so we can do a comparison ... we can only compare what we can compare. If we don't live in the same area, we can't compare that, but still, we can compare your att edge vs my t-mo 3g, which would still be a comparison of interest to the forum ... but we can only do that ... if you will provide actual speed test results.

i have an unlocked g1 on att, ... dare i say as fast as t-mobiles 3g in my area. ...

If you are going to go on a forum and allege that in effect, probably 95+% of the forum members who have an android device (since currently there is only one on the market) are chumps because we are all paying for 3g service that isn't as fast as your AT&T Edge service, you'd better be able to back up that outrageous assertion with facts.

Instead, when I challenged you to prove your assertion by providing speed test results for your G1 on your alleged blazing fast att edge service, I get ... 6 hours later ... crickets chirping ...

The application, Speedtest, is a free Market application, so I'm sure if you run the test and post honest results here, plus state what area it is you are in, then perhaps a forum member from your area with a G1 will run the speedtest and give us his T-Mo 3G results. Although personally, I suspect test figures from area to area will only vary slightly, not wildly.

The speed test results I posted above are for my G1 on T-Mobile in Phoenix, AZ.

are you serious? wow, go get a life. all i did was make a statement that the edge service in my area is just about as fast as the 3g. AT&T's 3G is far superior in my area than T-Mobiles and my edge is running pretty decent. sorry i have stuff to do and im not on this forum waiting 6 hours for you to post back to a statement i made. i DONT CARE if your 3G is faster then my edge...with the numbers you posted you probably live right under a tower "webby." now go pull the stick out of your butt.

Nick, I doubt that the tone of your reply is called for ... I think webby was just saying that for fair comparison .. why not supply the numbers...

I know from comparing my G1 with friends iPhones in the Washington DC area that my browser is faster than their's ... however we didnt have the speedtest apps to compare Download/Upload speeds.

This forum is for posting info and trying to gain knowledge from each Private other's expierence ...

If you dont want to do a speed test and provide your numbers ... Then just say that ... I dont think anyone will be offended if att's or tmo's speed is better in one area than in another ... just of comparative interest to see how the two networks compare to real-world testing ...

Please keep your personal attacks private if you feel that you MUST say things that dont contribute in a positive nature ...

I think all the members will respect you for that restraint

Otherwise enjoy the forum and continue to contribute to the community

Nick, you made a claim that your att edge service is just as fast as T-Mo 3G service in your area. You said you have access to the Market. We're all about information and education here. So I asked you to kindly download the Speedtest app and provide the forum with some stats on your att edge service so perhaps someone in your area could run a speed test on their T-Mobile service.

The response I got from you is a childish personal attack (notice that I don't respond in kind). It wouldn't have taken you much longer than it took to type your personal attack on me to download the Speedtest app and run a quick test. But for some reason, mounting a personal attack is more attractive to you that getting and providing some statistics for a discussion between adults. And so far as I've seen, you still haven't even bothered to disclose to us the area where your alleged super fast att edge service is.

And no, FYI, I don't "live on top of a tower". I ran my speed tests at my home, which is in a quiet middle class neighborhood in North Phoenix Arizona.

If you are interested, there is an app called "CellFinder" in the market and you can get the Tower and distance and strenght of signal GPS loc. etc...

I used XtremeLabs Speedtest just now at work from inside the middle of an office building near DC's National Airport and using only 3G:

Download: Average: 232.6 kb/s Max: 389.8 kb/s
Upload : Average: 61.9 kb/s Max: 61.9 kb/s

What Speedtest app do you use /

you may have asked "kindly" the first time, but then 6 hours later you're calling me out because i haven't responded. so no, i dont have any respect for someone who calls me a liar. you're numbers are outrageous, and personally i dont really care anymore. i made a simple observation on my behalf, nothing that said oh AT&T is better then T-Mobile! or something even more childish like "T-Mobile SUCKS", all i said was that in my area it seemed like the AT&T edge was almost as fast as T-Mobile's 3g. i dont care if its true or not, i didn't write the comment to have someone jump down my throat, and i personally dont think my post was uncalled for. you were being just as childish calling me out and saying "crickets are chirping" and what not. i still stand by my comment.

...and if you havent noticed, im not going to waste my energy downloading a speedtest app for someone who approached me like you did.
