First, thank you everyone who helped me through the Rooting and Partitioning my SD. Yes, I made it!!

Special thanks to SUroot on the excellent, clear step by step guide.

I have been checking out different types of custom rom for awhile. still not sure which rom is the most stable, low maintenance rom. Any suggestion?

I see lots of people use Ginger and Miui, what about Cyanogen Mod 7?
I kind of like the Cyanogen Mod lay out.

What i needed most is the Map with GPS function, Portable Wifi Hotspot, the HTC weather and clock lay out.

Any suggestion? ;)

Welcome to the world of android rooting. From here, your possibilities are endless :)

Anyway, I'll begin with the obvious.

Firstly, you need to choose what ROM you want. You state some requirements so I'll go through each one by one. But before that, you need to pick what type of ROM you want. Within each catagory, there are loads. So I'll talk about the three main types of ROMS first.

ROM types:

1. AOSP ROMs (Android Open Source Project). These roms are built on the stock android os with no skins on top. This is found on the likes of the nexus one and nexus s, and it looks like this...

2. Next is HTC Sense ROMs

They have all the same functionality of AOSP roms pretty much, but have HTC's sense skin on top. With that, you get all the extra's like the flipclock and so on. It looks like this...

3. Miui Roms

These are different. They are made by some chinese developers and are also based on AOSP's, with their own Miui skin on top. They are more or less a duplicate as far as possible of the iphone OS, and offer lots of customisation not found on other ROMs. They look like this...

----------------------------------------

Now you have rooted, you can flash any of those you want. But it isn't just a choice of 3. There are hundreds and hundreds of customised versions of each. And it all comes down to personal choice. No one is better than the other as really they are all very different. Sure, some will be faster but others will have new features and so on. That is for you to choose.

Requirements:

1. Maps (Google presumably? ) with GPS function. This is available on all ROMS, so that isn't a problem.

2. Portable Wifi Hotspot - again that's on all new ROMs so that's just dandy :p

3. HTC flip clock. This one may be a problem. As this is an HTC feature, it is only available on Sense ROMS. However, a while ago there was an app on the market called "fancy widget" which was exactly this. However, it was taken down as HTC claimed copyrights or something. But, luckily for you, I kept the apk (app file) so I can send it to you if you wish and you can use it on any ROM :p

---------------------------------

If you have been using sense for a while, you might want to try something new and different. I suggest you try GingerVillain. It's an AOSP (stock) ROM based on the latest android version 2.3.3 (gingerbread). It is very stable and a very nice ROM in general. I used it for months, and SUroot is still a passionate user too.

It's pretty much identical to that found on the nexus s!

It looks like the first picture I posted.

Again though, some people don't like stock so much and prefer the fancier sense user interface. It's really your choice.

Hope this helps :)

-------------

PS. Do you know what a launcher is ? :p These can really help make these decisions for you before flashing a ROM.

Also, do you need help flashing the custom ROMS? I'm sure everybody here (myself included) would be more than happy to help ;)

No! I have the original Fancy Widget which was identical to sense. I run it on every ROM I use.

Look! My most recent Miui screenshot.

Nearly but not quite identical.
HTC clock "flips", fancy widget doesn't.
HTC clock also has full screen weather animations on unlock where-as Fancy widgets as a much smaller/ slower unlock animation.
Also I think the HTC clock is slightly bigger than FW clock.
So very close approximation but not exact ;)

Ah the original FW was the one pulled by HTC, so yes that could well be indentical.
Sorry - my FW is only a couple of months old so no doubt more different from the HTC clock.

I think we are both right. It doesn't flip or have weather animations, but it looks identical (static) and that's what I wanted it for ;)

Thank you so much Williamj1, your info are awesome! I do like the HTC weather animation.... but you are right, as an android user I should try out different rom. I always switch back to sense anytime I want.

What's your opinion on Cyanogen Mod 7?

It is great. But I prefer GingerVillain if you are going down the AOSP route. GingerVillain takes the most recent Cyanogen Mod ROM and customises it further. If you look around these forums, GingerVillain is by far the most popular rom after sense. It is very stable and fast.
