Simple tornado warning app

I live in a tornado-prone area and am well outside of the audible range of any local tornado warning sirens. I just want an app that will wake me up in the middle of the night for a tornado warning, and that's it. I don't want weatherbug, twc, etc. and all of the junk that comes with them. I don't care about forecasts, radar, temps, other warnings, or anything else. Just tornado warnings. Anyone know if something simple like this exists?

I've looked into text alerts from the NWS and weather.com, and they don't let you select individual warnings or anything. Hoping there's an app out there somewhere.

Honestly, text alerts are the best thing for you. If there is bad weather in the area, that could knock out internet data, which would leave you with nothing. However, texts will still work, even with the lowest of signal.

Try your local news stations website. All the news stations in my area have a text service that I use, and you can specifiy what watches/warnings you want and for what counties.

Actually, I take that back, the BEST thing for you would be to invest in a weather radio. Those things will ALWAYS work, and will notify you before any app, text, or tv station can.

Thanks for the reply, sitlet. Unfortunately the tv stations around me aren't as accommodating as yours, because they offer text alerts but I can't select the exact alerts that I want. The only option is "sever weather" alerts, which I think usually at least means severe thunderstorm, flash flood, and tornado warnings.

That's actually the same problem I have with the weather radio I have. The dumb thing goes off for every blasted alert, even when I supposedly set it not to do so. Weather radios are handy and all when you're taking cover in the basement, but I was really hoping for something on my phone that not only alerted me during the night but also if I was out somewhere away from my house as well.

I've been very happy with weatherusa.net. Free account lets you specify exactly what watches / warnings you want. Website is a little confusing, but sending text messages to verizon's email to sms gateway works just fine. They usually arrive about 10-15 seconds before my weather radio goes off.
