Tethering..resolved?

I called VZW, about a data cap. The rep told me (we all know that they are sales people) but if you use data on the phone, the e-mail and data package is unlimited for smart phones. If you use your phone to tether OR you buy an air card, the MiFi or a netbook there is a 5 gig cap. Basically your phone becomes an air card, and VZW does know because you bought a verizon phone. They have branded the phone with software to prevent people from using this feature without paying a monthly subscription.

Hope this helps.
I worked for Verizon in the Network Repair Dept.

No they dont know if you tether or not and NO there is NO cap on your phone data plan. You just have to laugh how the uneducated Verizon rep thinks Verizon branded the phone with software to prevent people from using tethering when this is 100% false.

I'm not clear on the whole tethering thing.

The salesman who sold me the eris told me that it was not capable of tethering and that if it were, there is a $30 per month charge. That seems like a lot of bs to me.
If I already pay for unlimited data, than the data should be unlimited... period.

So, does pda.net allow the eris to tether without that charge?

The salesman was probably trying to do is state Verizon's company line: Verizon does not yet offer tethering on the Eris but they have announced that it will be available for an additional $30/month sometime this quarter.

I haven't incurred a charge due to tethering my device. I used it all last month (from time to time...no where near 5GB) and there wasn't a charge on my phone. PDAnet is a great app and I'm happily using it right now.

And that's the key. If you don't go over they probably won't care. If you go over they will warn you. If you go over again they will charge you. These PDANet people don't care if you go over or not.

I'm still waiting on the tetherors who go over to provide proof they go over whenever they want to. So don't lull yourself into thinking you can thumb your nose at the 5GB limit. They will care at some point.

I used 7gb last month and probably 10gb will be used by the end of this one. All is under the unlimited plan. There is no "cap" like people make believe there is.

Yes I worked for Verizon in the Network Repair Dept.

There are two types of people in this thread. The ones who create thier own reality and believe what they "feel" is correct and people like me who know and have seen first hand the correct info.

You forgot the 3rd type ... the type that files frivolous "law suits"

As far as I know, the only was VZW can track if you are tethering or not is when you use their VZ Access Manager. All devices like blackberry, mifi, and pc cards use this. With Pdanet, you are not using this program. I would use this with some caution, most pda users use less than 2gb per month, so if you are well above that every month you may pop up on someone's radar at VZW.
