Need Tasker help, will pay

So I need a very specific feature for our business, I think a Tasker pro should be able to create it. I am happy to pay as needed (PM me for this part).

I need a repeated audible alert for unread email to a specific email account on my Android device (VZW TB). Ideally, it would only apply to one Sender's email address.

Example:
My device on full silent when I go to bed -- i.e. silent for all alerts and notifications.
johndoe@gmail.com sends me an email to my apache@gmail.com email address.
My device starts going crazy with an audible alert, until I get up and turn that alert off.
I do what I need to do.
Device back on silent (and silent to any other notifications).
I go back to sleep.
johndoe@gmail.com sends me another email to apache@gmail.com.
Device starts going crazy until I wake up.
Everything else will remain silent -- all calls, all texts, all other emails from anyone else.

Can this be done?

If not, then the device simply going crazy with any email to apache@gmail.com would be ok too.

I don't know the first thing about Tasker, but you should be able to go into your settings and turn down all the settings except notification ((which would be the control for your email). Quick settings is great as it pulls all the system settings into one place for you, if you can't find the controls you need

Tasker can't control anything directly within Gmail, so you may be out of luck here. Sorry...

This can be done in Tasker only if you use K-9 mail as your mail app on your phone. If you wanted to go further just say so, I don't mind assisting.

I don't think he needs tasker to do anything with gmail to do what he wants here. I feel like this should be doable...you can set your phone to run a task when you get an sms from a specific number, I've never looked if it has an option for email. I'll play with it when my phone's done charging

I could have named other apps as well. However since the OP asked about Tasker doing it and not "what app can do this", I gave him the advice he required.

This seemed to imply He doesnt NEED tasker to do it, but someone who knows tasker would be able to help him set it up. But...why pay a tasker pro when a simple app is capable of doing exactly what he is requesting?

BTW if you silence all sounds except notifications, the emails/texts he doesnt wanna hear at night will blare

If you don't want to use K9 Mail, there's another option.

In Gmail, you could create a filter for the messages that you want and have Gmail forward a copy of those messages to another address.

Most cell phone providers have an email address for your text messaging. Usually it's your phone number @provider.net or something like that.

So, forward critical messages to your phone as an SMS. (This has the added benefit of you being alerted even if data is disabled or no data connection is available on your phone.)

Then, you can use Tasker to setup a profile based on the Event > SMS Received context.

Y'all are right -- I shouldn't have specified that I need Tasker to do it, an app would be just as good.

Smart Silencer looks good, I just got it but have yet to try it. Assuming I can set it to notify exclusively for one sender's incoming email address or #, is there any way to make it continue alerting until an action is taken to turn it off? That is the second part of what I need done...

K9 + Tasker is certainly a fix I'll explore, if Smart Silencer doesn't do the trick.

Its Kind of a pain, but if you leave notification volume up and set silent for messages(in the app) and call volume only the emails will sound for the contacts selected otherwise all else will be quiet

assuming that you'll get an sms notification for the emails, then yeah it can be done

1) make a silent profile for the time period you want

2) make an independent task -> 'stop media'

3) make another profile for sms received.
in this one: reset volumes, put phone on loudspeaker, run the menu task you created in step 2, play media.

it should work, it will play a notification through the loudspeaker when an sms is received and stop when you ask it to. if you need more detailed explanation let me know as i haven't tested any of this.

edit: in order to get it to sound only for messages of a particular number, you'll have to test what number to put in there when you receive the text from your carrier.

Glad you like the idea.

There is a tasker profile here (WorkPager Switch to Audible Profile and Repeat SMS - Tasker Wiki) that includes a repeated SMS alert.

That profile does more than just repeat the SMS alert, so you might be able to simplify it some. Hopefully that will get you started. If you have any questions, just post here.

This is getting hardcore. I've just enlisted a developer to create what I need from scratch -- i.e. an app like Smart Silencer, but that can selectively alert for calls, texts, or emails (or any combination thereof) for one or more select contacts. And the alert will continue to sound until an action is taken to turn it off. I am told it will take 3-4 weeks. Will let y'all know how it turns out, if it works properly we'll list it on the Android Market. But of course y'all here who have been so helpful will get pro bono copies if you want them, thanks, stay tuned...

Thanks, don't forget it is still doable with Tasker if you use K-9 mail. But if you want to use the Gmail app, and you can get it to work, I look forward to it.

I'd like to try the gmail forwarding option. One thing I noticed though is that I believe when configuring the 'Received Text' context, tasker is looking for an actual phone number. Since this is coming through from an email account it doesn't catch it.

Seems that variations of this have been brought up, but this is the first thing that came to mind:

1) Setup a Gmail filter that forwards that contact's emails to its own unique email address (an address that it specifically for this purpose).
2) Get K9 and sync ONLY that new unique address (do not use K9 for any other e-mail address).
3) Use Tasker to setup a night profile that keeps everything on your phone shutup
4) Use Tasker to setup a profile, with a higher priority than #3, that makes your phone go nuts if K9 gets an email (You know that the only email arriving is the one being forwarded from that particular person).
5) Setup the exit task for #4 to shut up everything again.

Setting this up for multiple individuals only requires adding more people to the forwarded email address. And adding the SMS feature is MUCH simpler.

Shouldn't take more than 20mins to do everything listed above. Beats the hell out of 3-4 weeks.

I've looked around, however, and cannot seem to find it anywhere.

I too was planning to use tasker but found it a bit more involved than what I need for my use.

I work in IT and am regularly on call during off hours - aka, the time I'm sleeping. A way to allow only these alerts (emails or texts) through while keeping the rest silent as well as forcing me to answer it before it shuts up is PERFECT for my needs.

Smart Silencer does most of what I was initially looking for. Back then I didn't realize that it does filter emails and texts as well (in addition to calls). I wish I'd have known that prior to blowing $700 on an Indian guy from Elance to create what I sought -- he ended up making an app chalk-full of errors and problems -- when I pointed these out to him, he'd just say "I can't replicate the error on my end." Total waste of $. Be wary of programmers on Elance.

I am quite curious. Isn't it the norm for a customer to get the app test ok before paying? You actually pay for the app BEFORE testing it? Hmmm.. then you ought to change the way you deal with developers. Since you are a paying customer, you should always ask to test the app BEFORE paying. The only exception is unless you are dealing with companies that act on behalf of freelancers then there is some contractual issues mandating payment first etc etc.

Try to do business direct with the developer instead of via proxies.
