I use night vision goggles every night at work and the other night I pulled out my phone to check a text. Before I could look down I noticed that my goggle were flashing from a light source. I have never noticed this before. I looked down at my phone a saw an flashing light coming from the speaker grill (not visible with the naked eye. I realized I had skype on (beta with FFC) I turned it off and the light went out. I went into a very dark room and was able to see it with the naked eye it's a very dim red light and goes off when I turn off skype. Any ideas on what it's for?

Its the proximity Sensor. The phone kills the LCD screen when it is up to your face.

Wait...You're checking your phone w/NVGs on? I hope you're not turning the bloody screen on while you're wearing them. You could do some damage

You have the following on the front top part of your phone:
- Notification LED
- Proximity Sensor
- Ambient Light Sensor
- Front Facing Camera

Ambient Light Sensor is all it could be but I would think it wouldn't just be on with the FFC. Anyone with Skype test it out in a dark room cover the screen up with your hand and look at the speaker screen. Willdogs do you know were the Ambient light sensor is located?

It's gotta be the ambient light sensor or proximity. The Pic could be wrong. I now think that is the ambient light sensor and not proximity (In the pic)

Proximity Sensors usually use IR light, so it is possible that the Proximity sensor is located under the grill.

I wonder why it goes off when the FFC is off. I could see the FFC using the ambient light sensor for the FFC settings to adjust for low light,

I did some testing and it does seem to be the proximity sensor. I placed my finger over the spot by the verizon check mark like the previous picture and nothing happened. I looked at the grill and noticed a very faint light that I could barely see in complete darkness. Any time I made a call and then placed my finger across that light and the screen went off. So, I'd have to say it's the proximity sensor.

I always thought the Proximity Sensor was at the top of the verizon check but looks like it's actually in the grill. I wonder why it stays on with the FFC and goes off when I close skype. I never tried making a call and checking it. Thanks for you help.
