I did not do a search yet and see if anyone posted this, so forgive me if someone already did. So i started a new thread with the same title from another forum.

I got my phone from a Tmo store when it came out on Wed April 20 2011. I found this in another Forum and thought i would pass this on... as a definite way to improve battery life.... for those of us barely getting 8hrs (my Nexus One got 14 average easily) And i did do Cycle the battery 3 times (ran phone until it would not turn on anymore and then charged over night) times before this and this seems to be the most help full....

This is a sister-thread to "Battery Drain Fix" for the g2x that lists a factory reset as a possible fix to battery drain issues.

First, let me say that even if you do not currently have battery drain issues with your G2X, that doesn't mean that you're immune. My battery has been phenomenal at times, abysmal at others. I've done the factory reset and that DID help for awhile, but battery problems arose again.

I believe the problem that plagued my phone was the dreaded 50% cell standby problem. If you're unaware of this problem, essentially the issue is that "cell standby" (found under settings --> about phone --> battery use) is at or around 50% always -- in other words, it doesn't matter that the phone has fine reception, is or is not being used, or even has the signal active (that's right, the problem persists even with airplane mode activated).

While I do recommend the factory reset method (assuming that you haven't had your phone too long, as it can be a real pain to reconfigure everything if you've set it up how you like it over many weeks...), I think this alternate method is something we should all do as well. In brief, you'll want to do the following:

-open dial pad and dial *#*#4636#*#* (If Testing menu doesn't come up than click "Call" and it will come up)

-Go to Phone information

-Scroll down and you'll see preferred network type

-click it and switch it to GSM/WCDMA auto

-click back button

After taking these steps, you should see an immediate improvement to your battery drain problems, as well as much faster battery charge times. Additionally, your cell standby % should decrease dramatically.

Now from me ---
I did a reboot after doing this...which may or may bnopt have been needed....
So after doing this if you go to
Wireless and Networks - > Mobile Networks -> Network Mode.
You will notice that nothing has a bullet by it. Don not change it to anything after doing the above fix/change. just leave it that way.

I did this late last night. And let my phone run down to about 3% before putting it back on a charger. This morning after being off a charger for about 1 hour 20 minutes to about 1 and a half hours i am only at 97%. Where as usually by now i would be at about 85% or so. of course your results may very, but i definitely see an improvement.

Good luck!

Ah.. Im not having much luck at all when it comes to battery. Iv tried almost everything. Iv done the full charge cycles, and yesterday i rooted it and used the battery calibration app, which was suppose to help, and tried this now too. I have been unplugged for 32mins. I used the web browser to view two pages of this forum, checked facebook once, and did the function stated in the post.. im at 93%.. =(

Edit; Its been less than 5mins since i last posted, i havnt even touched the phone since.. now its at 91% =/.

Basically telling the phone whether to use Edge (GSM) or 3G/4G (WCDMA). As the phone struggles to maintain/manage the signal, its using a lot of battery.

Thanks!!

I don't really have a battery problem. I also have a good 4G signal strength, but I will just change it to see what happens. I have had it unplugged for about 2 hours after changing it with little use and it is still said to be 100%. Seems to be helping despite my good signal strength. That's awesome!

Of course, this will all be even better once CM7 comes out for it.

Roger that. I'm seeing much higher drain while at work than at home -105dBm vs. -67dBm respectively. The "bars" level should be adjusted. Given that calls will not initiate when I only have "2", when the signal is at -107dBm.

Ahh.. and this was suppose to fix the Cell standby issue right? My Cell standby is at 38% right now, with Display at 43%.. (display is about ~20% brightness). Is that normal?

The reason you see a gain in battery life is because it allows the phone to go into 2G mode when the connection is weak. Kinda sux since it slows down your internet at the wrong times if you get a weak signal.

Today for the first time since I bought my G2X, the battery didn't drain before noon, in addition now, at 6 pm, it has a 72% charge left. I have had normal usuage today and have been running wifi, BT, auto sync, etc. I have been wondering if TM upgraded something overnight, but I can't tell.

Then the shocker, my wife came home and showed me the battery level on her Samsung Galaxy S4G as she has been having the same battery problems. It hardly drained all day.

Have anyone had this happen? Did TM do something overnight?
