Solved: HTC Sync workaround now recognising Tattoo/Magic/Hero

Hi Guys.
Here's a quick tour de force to make your HTC sync recognise your Tattoo/Magic/Hero. Although I have only done it on a laptop running XP SP3 it should work on all Windows versions. If this workaround works for you then please take a couple of minutes to write HTC support so the can integrate this solution in future upgrades. It should take HTC developers little time to have this implemented or to make a registry patch available for download.
They will probably be more prone to do so if 1000 customers write them instead of only 1 (me) do so.

Solution (I'm guessing that you get a DPinst.ext notice when installing HTC Sync V 2.xx):

1. Uninstall

Uninstall all other phone software e.g. Sony Ericsson PC suite & Nokia PC Suite. If you have third party bluetooth software running through the USB port (e.g. the OEM WIDCOMM driver used by many third party manufacturers) and want to use HTC bluetooth on your PC, then uninstall the driver.

Remember to uninstall all previously attempted versions of HTC sync.

2. Download

Download the freeware program CC Cleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/download .Run it and do a registry scan. Fix problems in CC automatically and save the deleted registry entries (you will be prompted).

My problem is that the HTC Driver can't be found by the installation program. The .../HTC/HTC Driver/ folder is completely empty, and this is where the installation program is looking.

Where the heck is my driver? :O

My PC is already pretty clean since it is brand new, so your "clean-up" guide didn't really do much to help with my problem. The only virus program I have is Microsoft Security Essentials (I disabled live protection).

Try doing a search on your C:\ drive for: *.androidusb; *.htcrn; *.WdfCoInstaller. they should have an ending with either: .cat; .dll; .sys; .inf

To do a more thorough search in the future (a fast search). Download the freeware program Copernic ( www.copernic.com ). It's like Google Desktop and MS index only faster, more thorough and consumes way less memory.

You could also search for the folder name: HTC Driver; Driver Files; XP_x86 (last one only if you use XP in a 32 bit version).

I found one of the biggest issues with finding the Tattoo with HTC Sync is as follows:
If you do not use the oficial THICK USB cable that comes with the phone, but use an after market retractable or other USB cable, then there is not enough information sent up the wire for the computer to recognise the phone.

Tried this on different computers and eventually took the original USB cable which I had permanently fixed to a part of my house for charging and all was normal and working.
