2.3.4 GingerBread

For those of us who purchased the Nexus S "Plan-Free" for full price rather than a subsidized price via a carrier plan, how will the Gingerbread 2.3.4 update reach our devices?

I'm currently moving the Rogers sim back and forth between my iPhone3G in my Nexus S until my 3-year Rogers contract expires in July - at which time I will move to a carrier with better coverage (Telus/Bell).

1. Does the fact that Rogers offers the Nexus S for its network, combined with the fact that I'm currently using Rogers' 3G network, mean that I will receive the 2.3.4 update from Rogers?
2. Or does the update come directly from Google?
3. Does the update require a 3G connection or will it reach my device if the sim is removed and the Nexus S is operating on Wifi instead?

Thanks very much for any clarification you may provide!

With this announcement I can't believe this forum is so lifeless! I figured that it would be all a buzz with excitement. I guess everybody here is "rooted" and doesn't really care about the update.

For me I'm still sitting at 2.3.1 (un-rooted) having purchased my nexus s two months ago at BB in the U.S.

I'm also not comfortable doing a manual update, but its starting to look like I may have to. I've been hearing and reading about the mythical "OTA's" ever since I bought the phone, but over the past two months I haven't seen anything.

Does anyone know how long this update process will take, or whether it will only impact the 2.3.3 folks?

Any information will be appreciated!!!

The update doesn't take long, maybe 15 minutes. It's very easy. Just go to the link, download the file and follow the instructions.. You're updated.
I didn't like the way the screen colors looked after the 2.3.3 so I rooted and now use a ROM and VooDoo.

Thanks "Netconn" for responding back to my question.

Where is the "Link"?

Thanks,

DH

That's the link. You have to be on 2.3.3 in order to use that update though. Links for 2.3.2 and 2.3.1 will surely show up soon, but it's just as easy to update to 2.3.3 first.

To apply the update manually follow these steps:

1) download the file from the link and put it into the root directory of your USB storage.
2) reboot your phone into recovery mode (power on while holding volume up, select "recovery" using the volume keys and power button. To enable the recovery menu, hold the power button and press volume up).
3) select "apply update from sd card."
4) select the a14a2dd09749.signed-soju-GRJ22-from-GRI40.a14a2dd0.zip
5) watch it install then select reboot.

The end.

Anyone know if the screen yellowing issue has been fixed in 2.3.4?

I'm doing two jumps from 2.3.2 and my god does the screen suck after updating to 2.3.3!

It won't fix it, they changed the color temperature of the screen on purpose. The only way to change it is to root and install a kernel that has Voodoo control support. That's what i did but i only slightly modified it from the way it looks on 2.3.3 you really get used to the color change after a while.

does anybody color saturation look normal or bad?

It definitely doesn't look like it did with 2.3.2 and earlier. I don't have an extra Nexus S to compare it to, but it looks like 2.3.4 uses the same colors as 2.3.3 or at least very similar. I'm not positive on that though; 2.3.4 might (and I stress that might) have a better contrast with whiter whites than 2.3.3.

Personally, I prefer the adjusted colors over the 2.3.2 colors. I never liked that purple hue it gave everything.
