*HTC Rider or HTC Evo 3D?*

Peace All,

With the recent "leaks" of the HTC Kingdom and HTC Rider, it is obviously clear that the HTC Rider belongs to the "Evo Family" due to its capacitive buttons at the button of the screen. Do you think its possible that Sprint will get the HTC Rider (which appears to be very similar to the HTC Sensation) as an alternative for those that dont like 3-D? If so I think that would be the phone for me --3D is so gimmicky. The Evo "line" has brought Sprint its greatest success like the "Droid" line did for Verizon. Withe the Rider as an alternative would make the Evo Family complete with a variety of choices.
On a side note: every phone that has came out in the past year has attempted to copy off the success of the Evo---like AT&T=Inspire; Verizon=Thunderbolt; Tmo=Sensation. The Evo is the prototype for them all.

Well they are all brothers and sisters and will share a lot of the same traits. Couldn't of said it any better. People are so quick to jump on the next thing but are not seeing that they are pretty much the same phone with a slight design differ and no 3D. Everything else is the same. Like the quote says, you don't have to use it or look at it if you don't want to. It only shows for video and that's if you want to record in 3D, and pictures, and that's if you want to take pictures in 3D. It's just extra. Soon it will become standard. Is it a reason to not get a phone? No. Its a feature, meaning it can be used if wanted to.

Make educated choices and not on to the next thing. People think they're missing out if they settle. You really won't. The next thing is really not all that innovative. It takes a year or more to actually go to the next level. If it's not a number 2 or w/e of the same line of phone then the manufacturers will not try to beat their flagship phone a couple months later. Anything out between the year a flagship phone drops and the year it has to have a successor is just another version. I find it very silly with threads going back and forth about Evo 3D and Sensation. Same damn phone. Depends on what carrier you like and if you want the extra(3D). They all will have the latest Sense etc.

Nothing wrong with having an option. Many folks are into the aesthetics of a phones design and if a sleek,elegant and refined option is available in the EVO line of family, I think it is a positive thing for many.

No not at all. The 3D is still a beast of a phone. People are getting hung up thinking the whole experience is 3D. You can go through everyday life without using the 3D people...

And no, HTC Rider will not be the EVO 3D. Why? OG EVO 4 life!

I think I'm gonna trade in my EVO, since it has a microHDMI port that I don't tend to use a lot, and since I don't use it, totally means that nobody else will. And everyday it's hindering my daily phone experience by being another added feature. And now they're adding DLNA and MHL support!!! I am outraged. How dare they add more features to the phone to just sit there in my device. I'm very offended that HTC could do such a thing. The whole microHDMI/DLNA/MHL deal is such a gimmick!

I don't get why people complain about the 3D, and this is coming a person who dislikes 3D, and will likely use it very minimally on the phone.

Once again, the 3D is optional. If you don't like it, don't use it, it really is that simple.

I'm still baffled by people who also complain about dual-core devices or their lack of functionality. Tech evolves, it's just the way it is.

Why would you complain about extra features that in no way detract from the core experience the device will offer?

The only possible downside to this would be cost going up on devices, but I personally think, and many others would agree, that this phone being priced anything over $250 would be way too much and would limit the appeal and units sold.

uh...I really dont think you (or anyone else for that matter) read what I was actually saying. No where in my post did I complain about "3D"---what I said was that "3D was so gimmicky". I am well aware that :1.) the 3D is not part of the UI experience and 2.) that the feature is primarily a camera and video feature ONLY. The original point of this thread is NOT moot---for if you had read (again) what my post said its ORIGINAL intent was the possible speculation that the HTC Rider could be coming to Sprint as an "alternative" to those who were not SOLD on the 3D feature---and that if it was (since its closer to the Sensation w/ possibly NFC) that it would make a wider variety in the Evo Family line.
Most of you (again--without reading and comprehending what I was saying) ran with this topic and put your own "twist" on it.

There are other downsides IMO. I want to like the EVO 3D, and part of me wants to trade my EVO 4G for it. But 3D is not entirely "optional" in that it altered the phone fairly significantly.

1. There were enough complaints about the camera protrusion on the EVO 4G - with the camera surface being so large on the 3D and still protruding? Disappointing.

2. The 3D also caused the kickstand to disappear, at least from the version they showed at CTIA. While there will be covers with a kickstand, the only reason I have a cover was to protect the protruding camera. (BTW, I like the cover I finally settled on by case-mate. It keeps the phone profile thin and protects the camera.)

From an aesthetics point, the Sensation is the phone I wanted EVO 3D to be, except the missing kickstand. But it's not quite the powerful phone as the E3D, and it's on T-Mobile. I had a terrific experience with T-MO and my T-MO phones worked all over the world. I left T-Mobile to get the EVO. But with AT&T buying then, that's a deal breaker for me.

This whole "3D is a gimmick" thing can be summed up by this analogy:


When you don't like a song, you say "This song sucks" when you mean to say "I don't like this song."

The latter is irrefutable and absolutely correct. The former is not because all it takes is for one person to disagree that the song sucks.

Only if it added cost to the product or thickness (e.g. a giant hump on the back for a second camera). Not sure if any impact to battery life while using 3D or any impact to 2D screen clarity when not using 3D. Those are TBD. I'd rather have any added cost used to either decrease price or improve other aspects of phone (e.g. better 2D camera quality, better CPU, etc).

A gimmick is not necessarily a bad thing. Engineers may look down on them, but marketing people love them!

I don't believe this gimmick thing. it's simply real. the phones we have now have features we don't use. do we call it a gimmick? no. that's all the 3D feature is. options are cool but calling it a gimmick is not a reason to not get it. the entire UI is not 3D.

Actually, I believe the larger battery is what caused the kickstand to disappear, not necessarily the 3D.

I personally prefer the look of sensation quite a bit better myself, but it's a weaker phone internally and I can't imagine HTC bringing the sensation or a similar phone to Sprint so close to the heels of the 3D launch. Perhaps half a year later or something of the sort, but by that point, would it even be worth holding off the EVO3D?

I wouldn't expect another dual core android phone on Sprint till the Samsung GalaxyS2/Epic2.

We might see something new for blackberry, webos, iOS or WP7, but between the Epic2, Evo3D, and Nexus, Sprint will have their bases covered till the end of the year in terms of Android.


This acumen that 3D is a gimmick is idiotic. You don't like it, then don't use it. If you find the feature so morally repugnant go to another carrier and get an Atrix or something equally banal that is only a minor upgrade over the Epic1 or Evo1

The Evo1 was a multimedia flagship phone for Sprint. The Evo3D pushes multimedia functionality to the next level. Take it or leave it. There will be no shortage of people in line willing to take your place.
