This is a serious reply, and since I see a lot of admins/guides reading, I hope I have a broad enough audience from the powers that be.
The biggest weakness to forums in general is the ability to find a specific tidbit of information that you need. The information that's REALLY hard to find are contained in a thread that is 69+ pages long. Even if you use the search function on the forums, it only gives you the thread, not the relevant post in that thread. If you search inside a big thread, you may get hundreds of posts, which isn't helpful either.
The problem is that the current policy of organization is to try to minimize the total number of threads in a forum. If a given thread is relevant to an existing thread, they are almost always merged. The rationale for this is sound. Keeping these threads together means only having to look in one place instead of multiple. This works really well when all the duplicate threads are small. But once a thread becomes large, merging becomes a disservice to the community.
The large thread becomes most useful for people who are regulars and have kept up with the growth of the thread. To these people, only the last page or two are important, since those are the unread posts. For someone coming in from a search engine, it's not practical to read all the posts.
If you take a look at any thread with more than 10 subpages, you'll see duplicated content. people arguing all over again the same thing. This just adds to the clutter. So I think we need to put some more thought into when a new thread is merged with another. In many cases it makes sense to merge to the large thread; I understand this, but my point is, not always. Just wanted to see some more discretion from the admins. It's like when Mom cleans your room for you. It might look nice and neat, but you won't be able to find a thing.
The other thing I'd like to see improved (although this might be a limitation of the forum software) is to receive some sort of notification when a thread is moved or merged. In a merge, there's nothing that indicates where your post/thread went. In a move, you have a redirect link, but only for a set period of time. If someone doesn't return back to the forum in time, they won't know where their post/thread went.
This applies especially to people who arrive at the forums from a search engine and decide to post. Frequently, their post is not in the right place, and it gets moved. Next day, they come back to check for responses, and their thread is gone. All one has to do is hang out in the lounge to see a bunch of threads appear that have ample responses, but the OP never responds back. I believe they have no clue where their thread went. Of course, there are ways to find your posts in the User CP, but people coming from the search engines don't necessarily know what software this forum is running on and how to find their posts.
So it would be great if OPs get notified in some manner when their thread is moved. Either a PM, or email, or some other form of notification.
Other than that, androidforums runs a tight ship, and it's the best source for Android-related stuff.
BTW, I'd like to be a moderator. I've spoken to some about this, but was wondering if there was some sort of eligibility/interview process that I need to go through.... I'm active, and I feel that I'm qualified to do the job
