Have an opportunity to get a clean esn mint X for 200.00. My current phone is a Dinc. 4G is not in my area and will not be for a long time. The Dinc is a great phone, but I want the larger screen. A new unit from VZW is currently 400.00. I'm not gonna do any more contracts. Any thoughts?

With respect to the ESN, I recommend you meet the seller at a VZW store to confirm it's clean and add it to your account on the spot (assuming this person is a stranger). An ESN can be clear when you call to check, then reported lost/stolen between that time and when you actually meet the seller. The seller walks away with your money before you have a chance to activate it and learn it's now a bad ESN. On top of that, he gets an insurance replacement (if he has lost/stolen coverage). Or, the seller can have it active on the account, with the intent of porting the number to another carrier. If the contract is still in effect, VZW might "hold" the phone (not release the ESN) until the early termination fee is paid. These are just a few glitches that could occur if you just call VZW to confirm an ESN is clear and complete the transaction at a later time.

Back to your original question, I recommend the X over the Inc. Size alone is a big factor for me. Also, despite the locked bootloader, you can still root the X and install custom ROMS, themes, etc.

I made the move from my incredible to a DROID x. LOVE IT. The incredible was a little faster/smoother in some games, but the larger screen just makes me happy everytime I look at it. Also the screen just seems to pop more and it looks so vibrant all the time, even in direct sunlight. The locked bootloader is a little bit of a bother, but it is honestly not that bad. You can still flash roms to your heart's desire, but it may cause you to have to SBF back to stock if something goes a little bit wrong. Like I said, it is just 1 extra step in the flashing process, and it doesn't annoy me all that much. I do not regret the switch whatsoever.

Why get a used EOL phone for what you can get a brand new phone for? Only reason is that you don't want to extend your contract. But if the X takes a dump after a week, what will you do?

Staying out of contract is a beautiful thing. The phone could die in a week but most likely won't as long as you confirm everything to be working well when you get it. If it dies somewhere down the road, you have a CHOICE. Now that the yearly upgrade is a thing of the past for those of us stuck on a contract, you could have your X take a dump and then you have to go find a phone on Craigslist or use your old one. I suppose you could have kept expensive insurance and then pay $90 to get a refurbed, EOL X.

Edit: Great advice Basset!

You guys have me thinking now. The X2 is in Best Buy's system. I can't imagine the X2 being more than 550.00-600.00 new. I have a secret stash budget of 500.00 that I have been putting away for months for a new phone. I suppose I should just wait for the X2.

BTW, I want to use PDA Net for wired tethering and maybe Z4Root for wireless tethering. That's as far as I will go. Don't care to much about roms.

Not to knock the Droid X, but I just feel like the DX2 has not been improved enough to substantiate paying that much for it new. There are phones being sold at comparable prices that are faster and have 4G. You may not care for it now, but it will be nice to have down the road when towers start turning on the service everywhere.

Oh cool thanks. This is something I have abosolutly no interest in. I barely use my regular camera. I am defiantly interested in the X2. Same form more power. Why not?

Everybody lives with the phone choice they make for a year or so, so if this is what you "defiantly" :D want, then I say go for it. You should go for the features that YOU want.
