Nexus S 2.3.4 update

I have the nexus s and this morning i had a 2.3.4 update due on my phone. What a big mistake - after the update my fring video calls don't work at all, my facebook account can't be linked any more.
What do you guys think?

Don't know about Fring, but facebook works fine on my N1.

Facebook works fine for me. I haven't tried any of the other video chat apps, but Gtalk works just fine, either phone to phone, or phone to PC.

Did you try rebooting (power off/on) the phone? If so, have you tried a factory reset (which wipes your phone and requires setup again)?

I can go to Contacts ... and if I select "Add an Account" ... Facebook shows as an available option ... but selecting it results in nothing. You are just taken back to the main Contacts screen where it offers the option to "Add an Account" ... but you can NOT add Facebook any longer.

Can I back rev to 2.3.3 somehow or something? I LIVE through my FB accounts ... it's my primary use of the phone ... and without it ... the phone is INSTANTLY about 75% less wonderful.

I was COMPLETELY happy with it just the way it was.

If anyone has any ideas .... it would be TREMENDOUSLY appreciated!

They took away the ability to sync contacts with Facebook in android 2.3.3 so your only option is to revert back to 2.3.1 or 2.3.2 or root your phone. I'm rooted and can still sync my contacts with Facebook, and i am loving it.

Have you tried settings>applications>manage applications and selecting the facebook app and clearing the data? You may have to reenter your login.

I updated to 2.3.4 manually and haven't had any problems with facebook.

lunatic59 - thanks so much for the advice ... I just tried that ... and total no love. Epic fail. This is REALLY disappointing as I LOVED the phone JUST the way it WAS. I have NO need or use for Google Talk ... I just assumed (stupid I know) that 2.3.4 would provide me with only good new things ... and not break things that already worked great.

I just got off the phone with Samsung Tech Support ... and they are saying my last option is to do a hard factory reset (I did a soft reset already) ... which is VERY disappointing as I've just re-installed everything back to the way I wanted it from BEFORE (except for the FB contact not syncing thang of course) and I don't wanna have to do that another several times really. Plus I'll have to copy everything OFF the storage area of the phone that I painstakingly copied TO the phone before ....

Is rooting the phone particularly difficult? Will I void the warranty or something? I'm fairly technical capable ... I'm a tech support person for a switching, routing and wireless company ...

If you're sure going back to 2.3.1 or 2.3.2 will get me back "where I belong" and it's not too difficult ... I can do that.

In my opinion if you do tech support you should have enough knowledge to root your phone without much help. It will void the warranty if you don't relock the bootloader and flash the rom back to stock. But if you do both of those things they will never even know that it was rooted. So your warranty would still be intact. The only problem is you are stuck in the same situation if you do a hard reset it will erase everything. And unlocking the bootloader will do the same thing. It will erase everything on your USB storage and remove all of your apps. But if apps is all your worried about they created a few awesome apps like Mybackup Pro and Titanium backup that backup all of your apps and data for you. But these apps put the backup on the SD card so if that get's erased so do your backups. But it's just as easy as copying them to your PC and putting them back on to your SD card.

If you choose to root you can have the best of both worlds. Because roms like CM7 (Which i can't live without anymore) you don't have to worry about syncing your Facebook contacts and you can still have version 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 (If you go to nightly builds.) with all of the good bug fixes that come with those version. CM7 can be a little buggy, but it's not really that much different from stock and everything functions properly.

So ... I guess the Nexus S I got had 2.3.2 or lower on it huh ... and going back to 2.3.2 will put me back where I was?

What's the most straightforward way to get back to 2.3.2 safely? I don't really know what CM7 is and don't really wanna be messing around with customizing my phone at a debug/API/kernel level or anything ... I just wanna get it back to where it was.

I read some things about Superboot etc ... ? Another link said I could download a .zip file with 2.3.2 in it and copy it to the phone then select that image from the boot menu by holding Volume Up while I press the Power Button?

I just want a safe, easy dependable way to get back to what I loved.

Any links or instructions you can give me are GREATLY appreciated. More than I can say. Thank you so much!

Is what I want to do as straightforward as this:

Step 1: Download the official Android 2.3.2 update for Nexus S from here.

Step 2: Copy this file to the root of your SD card. (Nexus S users no longer need to change the file name to update.zip)

Step 3: Now power off your phone, hold down the “Volume Up” button, followed by the “Power” button to turn it back on.

Step 4: Now use the volume rocker buttons to navigate to “Recovery” option and then select it using “Power” button.

Step 5: Now when you see an exclamation mark –like image on the screen, hold down the “Power” button followed by “Volume Up” button.

Step 6: At this stage you should be presented with Android’s Recovery menu. Now select the option to apply the update from SD card, followed by selecting the actual update “.zip” file using the “Power” button.

Step 7: That’s it. Wait for the phone to complete the update process. Once its done, select “reboot system now” option to reboot your phone into Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread.

Does this mean that the .zip file I downloaded is corrupt, or should I have renamed it to update.zip ... is that mess saying I can only go from 2.3.1 to 2.3.2 ... ?

Which version of the nexus S do you have?

I would make sure you are downloading the right version of 2.3.2 for your device because it will vary depending on your build, and rename it as update.zip If you are positive you have downloaded the right file it may have not downloaded correctly.

There should be no reason for this not to work, it may just be easier for you to do a hard reset.

Tried downloading the file from another source ... and renamed it to update.zip.

Hmm i am trying to think of other ways that it would work for you. I am a root user so the way recovery works for me is much different than you. Let me see if i can find a decent guide for you.


edit: After looking around it appears as a lot of people are getting the Status 7 error when updating to 2.3.4

But it would completely wipe your phone, honestly it looks like your only option is going to be a hard reset or restoring a stock 2.3.1 nandroid backup. :/

OK! I'm not ENTIRELY opposed to rooting if I is reliable ... and reversible ... and will solve my problem. If I can root it ... AND run 2.3.4 ... and still have my FB contacts synced somehow ... that's fine too. Whatever solves this issue the most cleanly, with the least complications and steps ... I'm ALL for it.

I just want my phone back the way it was .... and I don't want to turn it in to a cool looking brick in the process. LOL. I REALLY appreciate your help!

Hard reset .... seeming to be the path of least resistance ... had no different effect than the soft reset. Phone is back to factory software wise ... but the firmware is still 2.3.4.

So ... it appears ... that I can't restore a Nandroid backup WITHOUT rooting the phone ... to get Clockwork Recovery to work etc ...

It's kind of seeming like I have no choice BUT to root it. Just a WONDERFUL state of affairs ... Google and Facebook put me in a position where just to get the functionality back that I loved and HAD already ... I've got to void my warranty just to get it back because of THEIR bad software choices and political dances ...

I haven't found ANY simple guide that shows how to root the phone either ... I've found some ... but then there are posts after posts after that say it didn't work right for various people ... which undermines my faith in the whole process ...

Hm i well I would suggest going to that link on XDA above and restoring the stock version of 2.3.1 you don't need to root to do that and you can keep stock.

If you are interested in rooting there is a really detailed tutorial on TheUnlockr.

Edit didn't see the last post. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to restore the backup without root as long as you are putting it in the right place.

... I can't seem to get the phone either rooted ... OR returned to stock 2.3.1.

EITHER answer would be fine with me ... but all methods fail ... either with a "Status 7" error ... or messages saying the .zip file isn't signed.

It seems that most ALL the options require getting Clockwork Mod Recovery installed ... and I HAVE installed ROM Manager ... which seems to be the same thing ... but IT insists that I have to have my phone rooted to work ... and I haven't been able to get that to happen either.

Many of the suggestions made say to download various .zip files to the phone which is easy ... then they talk about going into Recovery ... also easy ... but then they say to mount system and data ... and there are NO options in the base Android recovery to do any of that (at least not with 2.3.4 installed).

Similarly ... I have NO backup and restore options to create or restore a Nandroid backup ...

It has been one of THE very most frustrating experiences of my life. I had a phone that was GLORIOUS. Never enjoyed a UI and the integration of contacts and phone calls and text messaging with Facebook ANY more ... and now it's all GONE.

I'm not stupid ... but this SURELY has made me feel so .. firstly ... for blindly installing an update that has chopped the legs out from under what WAS a fantastic phone ... and secondly ... for not being able to find an option to overcome it.

Hopefully someone will be able to come up with an answer ... but I'm starting to think there isn't a KNOWN way to revert from Gingerbread 2.3.4 back to 2.3.1 or 2.3.2 or whatever will work to allow my FB contacts to sync to the phone again.

I've spent the better part of the past 24 hours on this ... and I guess I give up ... for now ....

If you want to get back to 2.3.2, you'll either have to use Odin (which isn't exactly straight forward) or find an official full version of the 2.3.2 ROM. You will not be able to do it with a 2.3.2 update because it will check for 2.3.1 first.

I don't know where you might find the full 2.3.2 ROM, but look around the XDA forums. It should be somewhere between 60MB and 90MB in size.

PLENTY available that are unsigned (installation aborts) or that are for Clockwork Mod Recovery flashing (which ... seems to require that I root the phone ... which I have not been able to accomplish either ... again ... I'm not even sure a way to root a 2.3.4 phone has been verified yet).

It SOUNDS like .... if I COULD find a stock, signed 2.3.1 or 2.3.2 ROM I'd probably be all set ...

Anyone have a link to either one or some other set of easily reproducible instructions that will allow me to either root the phone and use a 2.3.x ROM with it ... OR just get back to 2.3.1 or 2.3.2?

This is pretty frustrating ... sorry ... I know I'm repeating that a LOT. But I'm NOT repeating anywhere NEAR as many times as I've reset my phone and tried different .zip files that didn't work. ;-)
