Im not quite sure what you are asking. You want to get a data plan for one device, and also use that data on another device? No, that wont happen, you can only use the data plan for whatever device it is on.

There are ways to tether TO that device though.

Depending on the devices.... I think you can.. via tethering.

But I think it is better to get the data plan on the phone... and tether to the tablet

No service provider is offering data only for a smart phone but they do offer it for a tablet. Let's say I call them up and say hey I got a new tablet can you give me a data plan? I don't know of a way to make that possible. They activate any plan to a unique serial number to that device... the system knows what that device is.

Oh yeah. I do this all the time. To be precise, the prepaid data SIM I use are actually for those 3G data dongles usually of Huawei and ZTE manufacture. These data dongles got a cap which you can pull out, and insert a SIM into it. You purchase and load the SIM via text. This is quite common in Asia and Europe.

You can use such a SIM in your (unlocked) Android smartphone. It literally turns your phone into a mobile data only device. No text or voice, but you can get unlimited internet for a few days depending how on the package plan. I find this very useful for traveling, since the phone can be used both as a mobile wifi hotspot and internet device. I have to carry a second (unlocked) phone though, just for the voice and text.

CDMA is activated with a plan attached to the phone IMEID. GSM however, usually is not. The contract is based on the SIM.

But it's always good to inquire with your carrier.

Note, you can't use iPad micro SIM on an Android smartphone, which takes in regular SIMs. If the data SIM is for a Galaxy Tab, then you can fit it on an Android phone. Likewise, I've used regular phone SIMs on the Galaxy Tab, which lets you get voice and text off the Galaxy Tab like a giant phone.

Which carrier are you using? I have a pay as you go account with T-mobile, what would I have to do to do what you do? I don't totally understand your post. What is data dongle? How do I get it? How do I put it in my android phone?

The 2 posts i have quoted above seem to me to be asking pretty much the same thing... if you care to explain how you believe they are different i would be more than glad to hear you out... OR just report one of your posts (those go straight to the moderators) and explain to them why they are different as they are the 'law' around here, lol.......

One is about how to make the data plan for the tablet work on a smartphone and the other one is a generic question about which carrier offers data plan for a smartphone (sorry I said android in my original post)

Just get a mi fi mobile access device. It's a portable wi fi hotspot essentially. That should take case of both your questions as you can connect anything to it, phone, tablet, and laptop for data services only.

OK, thanks. How does that work? I can just carry this with me in my purse/pocket and will be able to connect with my smartphone. What do you mean that it will take care of both of my cases? I only have one case, smartphone.

What do you mean? So if I buy the mifi device and I pay monthly plan fee there is another fee to pay???? I don't understand
