Reduce Space Used By Apps

here is a trick I found ... Delete the apps you have then re-install them

For example -

I use Handcent and although it states on its page in the market that the file size is 2.02mb , the file size on my phone was 5.63mb. (is this because developers dont update this page to show the real file size when doing updates etc)

So i deleted the app and then re-installed it, yes I lost my settings etc, but easily reset and it is now taking up 4.95mb.

Now 0.68mb might not seem like much, but if you can eeek back a bit from each app you have, how much space would that end up saving ????

Are you sure that space wasn't just app cache though? You will have to run it a while to see if it claws that space back.

I regularly clear the cache on all my apps, even with the apps to sd in this section, i constantly waiver around the warning notice coming on with 2 little space, especially while waiting for gingerbread if it decides to show its face, I know i am going to have to free up memory to install it as im sure it was froyo that required 25mb of free space or it wouldnt install.

As i said, with all the settings back in place that where there before, so the data portion showing is the same size as previous (or thereabouts), the actual overall package size has come down by 0.6mb

I think it is not the app cache that is being removed. It is the app data that is gone after uninstall/fresh install. App data is growing when you start changing the default settings or adding info in an application. The most obvious example is a browser or SatNav software. There you can blow the app total size by for example adding favorites.

Now, instead of uninstall/re-install, you can simply open the application settings and press "Clear Data". That will have the same effect: you will loose your settings, but gain space...

I find the problems with apps like Twitter and Facebook. The cache remains at 0mB but the application data increases. Instead of uninstalling the app you can just delete the data manually. On twitter you don't even need to sign back in.

My question is - is there any way to uninstall some preinstalled apps (ones that I don't need at all), without being root, and thus to free some precious internal memory space?

Please if anyone knows if it's possible...

Not without root.
The pre-installed apps are usually on system partition, which is read only.

I used to do the whole uninstall/reinstall routine and found that whilst it released quite a bit of memory, it was a tempory fix.
The reality of it is simple, with the desire, as my facebook and maps eats into the memory, I have to delete apps, least used first and so on. I have apps 2 SD and find that only helps a little, Things like angry birds Rio, cane the memory. Great game but as the new segments are added, so another chunk of memory is taken. Reset the data and you have to start again.... rubbish!! I have resigned myself to needing a phone with bigger memory when I can upgrade, I am a techno dummy so don't want to root. A part of me also asks the question "Why should I?"
In the meantime, I'll have to fire fight with my memory, get red hot at app management and stop accepting those friend requests on facebook lol

I found an app today that seems quite useful. 'Super Box Pro' it tells you which apps are using what space on the internal memory and then the SD but also which apps are ONLY using internal memory.
With a rooted phone using Apps2SD+ the Android settings give you false figures. So this looks to be very useful!

I quickly found that Tap Tap Revenge was installed entirely on the internal memory using up 10MB. Others were a similar story but lesser amounts.

For example, using the app "App2SD - Save phone storage", I can also see which apps are movable and which ones are installed only in the phone memory. In addition, it can show the memory statistics, clear cache and batch move apps between internal storage and SD card.

In my experience, what geemacd describes does work. However, it's only a short term fix and the apps eventually claw it back.

Good call. the App2SD portion is VERY similar to that app but like you say with the added cache clearing etc.

Typical, look for an app like this for months and then find two in the same week..
