Thievin' B@stads app.

Is there an app to turn on the GPS remotely should it be stolen (or lost)? I mean, WaveSecure only shows the tower the phone is using (unless GPS is on when it's lost/stolen, I assume), so you could be 10-15 miles off, so being able to turn the GPS on remotely and picking up the coordinates from that would be much better.

I keep hoping that Instamapper GPS tracker folks will develop a hook that will snag and toggle GPS receiver state to ON when activated via SMS. Application is totally free and backgrounds until becoming enabled via an incoming SMS. Search for Instamapper in the market.

so it does or does not activate GPS remotely when the SMS is sent? The website's a bit confusing on this matter.

So far, it does NOT activate it but their admin guy says it's coming in a forum message from a year ago... so...
Meanwhile, I've found another app (Where's My Droid - $1 market) that I'm trying to get to turn on the GPS RX. So far, it hasn't turned on the receiver either. Starting to wonder if this is an Android (cupcake) API issue.... Just don't know.
Where's My Droid also has a 'special number' feature where when the phone is called from a special number (a setting) it plays a special audio selection at full volume for a pre-determined time. Kinda cool yet annoying yet cool. ;)

yeah, I just downloaded Where's my droid - free, but haven't messed with it. Can't really, considering I don't have another phone here with texting until my mom comes home lol

I'd still really like one that would turn the GPS on. I mean, I use cellfinder, and know where the tower I use is, and that's where all the locating apps pull the location off as far as I know. So, I'm about 10 miles off on my actual location. I very rarely turn the GPS on, as I don't have a major use for GPS on a phone unless I'm driving somewhere new (again, doesn't happen very often lol). Once the weather warms up, I'll probably use the phone for geocaching, especially when a new geocaching app comes to android.

Really? Anyone else have an issue with this?

Mobile defense is the same thing sends an international text from Great Britain I believe, but since it's only for emergencies I was not worried about it, I might look into one of the North American ones.

From their website...

Mobile Defense uses GPS, cell tower triangulation, and known Wi-Fi hotspots to locate and track your phone. If you have not installed Mobile Defense as a system app, you must enable at least one location provider in your phone settings. Failing to do so will prevent you from establishing a remote connection via our website. For the best location accuracy we recommend enabling both Wireless networks and GPS. Contrary to popular belief, enabling the GPS doesn't actually mean the GPS is consuming any power. GPS will not start looking for signals unless a GPS enabled application is running. This is drastically different from other things such as 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Those three constantly try to seek out signals, and thus consume battery power even when they are not used. Ive used mobile defense and looked for my phone via their website and i will say the accuracy is quite surprising, had me all the way down to the side of my room my phone was on. Once you set it up it will take itself off your apps list so no one will see it. I will def keep this on my phone just in case.

I'm confused why Mobile Defense would send a text from UK if it's only available in the USA...

I saw 6 texts on my bill last month from singapore. No idea what they were so I had them credited back to me.

Then I read it is Wave Secure. If you do any testing from the website, backups, locates, locks, etc. They come in as international texts that cost money.

No idea what receiving texts would cost me money. I am not going to pay for something anyone can send to my phone and I have no way to deny it.

Ok - So some users of wave secure have had the International Text Issue. Has anyone with Mobile defense observed this? How about any users of Look out? Lets figure out which one excels in the "International Text" issue....I agree....these apps are priceless if you have lost your phone. while most of us probably have insurance to cover the loss....finding the thieves would be a god send.
