Incredible 2 Car dock review (with pics!)

Ok, did a ton of Google searching and also on threads and couldn't find any good info on the Dinc2 dock except that it was "available."

So, I went down to the Verizon store and picked one up for $24 (with government discount).

To start this review, I need to provide some background info. I had a Garmin Nuvi GPS a few years ago, and I found a permanent "ball" mount for my dash. I can't stand the suction mounts, since they always seem to fall off for me. So, when I got my Droid 1, I was super excited to find that the car dock worked with the Garmin ball mount, you just unscrew it from the suction arm and put it on your garmin ball.

So, when I got the Dinc2, which I LOOOOVE, I really hoped the car dock would work, since I use my phone for navigation all the time, and dont use the Garmin at all anymore.

Well, turns out the Dinc2 dock is not compatible. I had to mod mine to make it work, which I will show, but if anyone is interested, the dock seems like it would work fine just using the suction. I actually suctioned it to my counter and it was bloody hard to pull off!!!

Before showing the pics, here is my review of the actual unit.

When I first got it, I thought it felt cheap, and I thought I would return it.
The plastic is a hard, cheap feeling plastic, and it has this sping clip on the top to hold the phone on. Also, attaching and removing the phone was difficult at first. I had to really try to line it up and then it seemed like it was really seated in there and didn't really want to come out. It seemed like the fit was way too tight.

Well, I dont know what happened, if it loosened up or what, but now it just slides in and out super easy. Maybe I just got used to the motion required to do it? Not sure, but it works fine now, and I pop it in and out multiple times daily.

I love having the charging port built in. It makes it really easy to keep my phone going when using it, although it does go to sleep even when plugged in, which i dont get.....

Anyways, on to the good stuff! The pics!

In this first pic, you can see the basic body of the holder, without the clip attached.

In this pic, you can see how the clip part attaches to the mount. On the D1 mount, there was a socket that snapped onto the ball of the arm. On this one, the bolt goes through the hole, and there is a thumbscrew nut on the bottom that you tighten to control the swivel and pivot action of the ball.

Here is a pic of the plate mount thingy, whatever it is called.

This is the half-ball thingy that comes out of the plate mount.

Here is the back of the dock itself, sortof. I screwed the plate from the Droid dock into the back of it to allow me to use the garmin ball.
If you didnt screw it in, you can see how the notches from the Dinc2 mounting plate line up. Notice the HANDY power pass through!!!

And here is the front of the cradle....

And this is the suction arm and plate put together.

Great post. I actually purchased one without much info as well. I think the suction is stronger than the mount I had for the Moto Droid 1. The clips to hold the charging cable and the audio cable are nice to keep things in place.

Here's the PROBLEM- the volume rocker on the Incredible 2 is not accessible when in the mount. the navigation volume can only be muted or un-muted once in the dock.

Other than that, the build quality seems perfectly fine to me. Seems like there wasn't much thought about the volume situation.

You know I forgot to mention the volume issue. It is annoying but I usually just turn it up beforehand.

With my Droidx, when you put the phone in the car dock, the car panel app starts automatically. I can't for the life of me even find the car panel app (unless I go to manage applications) much less set it to start automatically when I snap in my phone. I have had many Android phones so this is making me feel like I'm missing something really obvious.

The Moto phones have sensors in them that automatically open the car dock app when triggered by the magnets in the official Moto car dock.

The moto desk chargers work the same way, they trigger the clock app when the phone is placed in the cradle.

It's one of my favorite features about the moto phones, I wish other manufacturers did the same.
