Stop bashing the Droid!

Ever since the Nexus-1 has come out, I've noticed a great deal of Nexus envy on the part of many Droid owners. This has to stop. There are going to be dozens of Android phones released over the next year, each one claiming to be better than the next. At this moment, the Droid is still the best Android phone on the market in my opinion. I know that the Nexus has a "faster" processor, but I haven't seen evidence yet that the features are any faster than the Droid and if they are, my guess is it will be marginal.

The Droid is still the best Android phone with a physical keyboard. I personally use the keyboard, I know that not everyone feels the same way. Yes, we need to get 2.1 on the Droid.

As a Droid owner at least for the next 2 years, the best thing we can do is "encourage" Motorola to improve on the base Android system to keep the Droid at the forefront of software technology.

Just to get started here are some things Motorola could do to separate the Droid from the pack -

1) Add Multitouch to the Droid or create Multitouch applications
2) Create a great music player for Droid only
3) License content (movies, music) and provide for free with the Droid
4) License one of the home screen replacements and make it the Droid default

Real Droid problems should be addressed however, many of the Droid problems being reported are actually Android problems being assigned to the Droid.

Instead of bashing the Droid, lets encourage a strong community to get us the best product possible.

I don't know why there's envy. The DROID does so much that the N1 doesn't:

1) There's a physical keyboard that opens up many more applications and functionality than compared to the N1.
2) We actually have an LED light that works and can be assigned to different notifications.
3) We have Exchange Calendar support, they do not.
4) We have the best screen out there: Not only does it contain 26,000 more pixels being more resolute, it is also brighter and more accurate.
5) Our screens are covered by Gorilla glass, where as the N1 is not.
6) VERIZON FTW on DROID... T-Mo for the pain on N1.
7) Touchscreen on the N1 is inaccurate and is having major glitches... N1 owners have been crying out for a software update since its release.
8) We have better battery life.
9) Going back to our screens... ours is a 24-bit display, showing 16,7 million colors, while the N1 only has a 16-bit display (65,000 colors).

Should I go on?

In my opinion I havent seen a phone that looks cooler than the Moto Droid. I mean come on... its one of the smallest sliders.... neh it is the worlds thinest slider. Oh and the apps, well I dont really know about the Crapple iDrone but can it scan a barcode? That completly blows my mind. I would love to see Moto keep making this phone peak the charts. I remember the original Q. Now that was nice. And I agree on your guys comments. Kowboy with the multi-touch, I loved that on my Storm, and sooper_droid12's great list of Droid specs. Oh and believe me I dont hate on phones or their carriers.... I discriminate against all, even my Droid.

The only thing I can see appealing to the N1 is the speed it appears to have. And for the record, I am no N1 expert. Is there a new one coming out that's faster than the current one? I dunno. Don't really care all that much either. All I'm trying to say is that there are some recently released videos comparing the DROID to the N1 (i.e. the Flash 10.1 demo) and the Nexus seems to be quicker and smoother. Perhaps the 2.1 upgrade we're about to receive will change all of that. Time will tell.

Other than that, I don't think there's really any advantage in any other area. And I really do like having a hardware keyboard. (True geek at heart.)

I currently have both the Moto Droid (which I'm keeping) and the N1 (which I'm sending back because of the 3G issue).

I can assure you that the N1 is indeed a faster phone in all areas over the Droid. It's not as much as a difference between the Eris (which I thought to be basically unusable) and the Droid, but it is noticeably faster.

The Droid is fast enough for me in all areas but one: scrolling in the web browser on some sites. It is annoyingly slow on these sites since the 2.01 update. The N1 is significantly faster when scrolling on these troublesome sites.

I use the physical keyboard, but could easily live without it and I prefer a one piece phone. Had the N1 not had the horrible 3G issue with TMO, I would have returned the Droid in favor of the N1.

If the N1 and Droid were looking at me side by side in the Verizon store, I'd pick the N1. I don't need the Droid's physical keyboard, and the extra weight that comes along with it.

Having said that, I'm happy with my Droid. Very happy. Could it be "better" somehow? I'm sure it could. Would I appreciate the difference? Probably not. Do I feel my phone is pathetic because there's a new version out? Absolutely not.

Having envy of the latest and greatest is natural on a forum of technocentric people such as ourselves. Feeling the need to bash other products since they are no longer the latest and greatest is pathetic, however, and reveals much about a person.

Besides, the N1 only slightly shades the Droid in some areas, and falls behind it in others. It's not revolutionary by any means.

One final point: one does not always need "the best" nor does one always want it. When I bought my Droid Eris, I recognized that the Droid was faster, had a bigger screen and had Android 2.0. I was willing to give that up for the form factor and reduced price. If the phone wasn't such a laggy piece of crap for me (others have reported less lag), I'd still have it and be happy. And I certainly wouldn't be bashing Droid owners.

To each their own.

I am happy with my Droid. I don't really want the N1. I just want the N1's operating system. I think once the Droid gets 2.1 we will see improvements in our own devices that will make them even better than they already are. Personally, I can't wait for the 5 home screens and the removal of the bottom tray. That alone is worth the upgrade to me. Now, a keyboardless Droid that is thinner (and chinless) but otherwise the same....that might interest me.

great list sooper...but maybe i missed it in other posts from other reviews...does the N1 take 720p videos?

I don't think so. It takes 720x480 videos. Like the DROID. I think that was a big fail. One of the things that would have helped it be a game-changer: The ability to take HD videos. Not only that, but in certain situations, it only takes it at a paltry 20fps.

Well, with some of the problems that the N1 people are experiencing, what I want more than 2.1 is 2.1 without all their bugs. So, I want Google/Motorola/VZW to take as long as they want to perfect 2.1 before it arrives. I also want to give the devs some lead time on 2.1 to update their apps. I don't want to deal with incompatibility. I like that my apps work on 2.0.1.

As for chinless, they need the chin otherwise how would the mic work?

Honestly, the ones bashing the DROID or feeling N1 envy are usually guys (likely, nerds) who have probably need the latest and greatest technology to make up for other "areas" in which they're lacking, if you know what I mean. Same thing for guys who buy Hummers or fancy sports cars :)
I disagree with you. I love my droid and it is the best phone I have owned so far but it does not mean that I don't always want the latest and greatest. I do not use the physical keyboard so the N1 would have been nice for me. I am NOT a nerd and I can assure you that I am not lacking in the area you are referring to haha. Also, I would like a fancy sports car. Not because I have a need to overcompensate but because I like driving fast.

Oh, I forgot to mention that even though better phones will be released I will stay with my droid for the full two years.

I did say "usually"... there are people (like you and me) that understand what you're getting at. I'm saying, for the most part, if you've resorted to bashing or envy (which is a pretty strong emotion), then you're probably part of the "usually". If not, then you're in the other category, which is what you are so my post need not apply to you :)

I've heard several people complain about the browser scrolling slowdown in 2.0.1. I wonder what is causing that. I noticed no difference in scroll speeds or overall speeds in the browser after upgrading.

I wish there was a complaint section of the forum and a tweaking & education section, I get tired of seeing complaints and new issues pop up daily, mostly due to user error. It seems that some people look for a fault in their phone constantly while others use theirs for what it's intended purpose is and rarely have issues.

Just my opionion

one more thought...about the "problems that people look for etc..."

as a video engineer that deals with problems all day, i have to agree that 90% of them are user related, either they don't know, or they don't care to learn. a lot of it are people that say, "i have used xxxx for x years, and they have always worked". they don't realize that xxxx is different now than it was x years ago.... so you're always going to get people who say stuff like...."my phone won't turn on" and the answer is "did you hold the power button down for more than a half of a second?"..."no, i thought it was just a single press"....

sorry, that's the engineer in me coming out, lol...back to your regularly scheduled posting...:)

2) Create a great music player for Droid only

This is really my only hang up right now. And to do this right I think you almost need a PC/Droid application combo like iTunes/iPhone player. You need the PC side to organize you collection (sorry but while you could do this on your device, its gonna take one hell of an interface on the device to win over the ease of doing this on the PC) and download those large items like movie rentals that are DRM protected. This then syncs up with a music/video app on the Droid that allows those DRM rentals to be played. This would be a great opportunity for something like Songbird who has the PC app going on with sync to the Droid. Now write a killer music app for the Droid and you have just taken over then entire Android market! I cannot believe developers are not seeing this HUGE opportunity.

And yes, this is the Droid forums, I really could care less about the Nexus One. It was doomed from the day they announced it was for T-Mobile :D
