You think VERIZON is the one that decided on the memory spec? MOTOROLA designed the device...

What bothers me on that spec sheet is the 2 GB of secure storage vs. the 8 GB on the original X. I'm still fairly certain I'll get the X2 as even the X is a HUGE jump from my original Droid.

Never said it was Verizon's design, they are the one's signing up for the mid level devices, so Motorola designed it. I agree, the DX2 is a huge upgrade from your OG Droid and my Eris...

Original spec rumors for DX2 was 768 Ram...guess that was false.

The gTablet is fine with 512mb, so not sure if this is much of a problem as people may think, but it is still lame, none the less. No arguement that performance would be better with more though....... Only 512mb?? Really? Seems a silly miss by Moto.

The X 2 is MUCH better off with 2gb, since 8gb device app storage was overkill on the X 1, since most apps push large data files to the sd card anyway. With the X 2. you now have 6gb of media storage, rather than wasted space on the Droid X. It will take a long time to fill up 2gb.

Well, 2gb probably = 1.83gb and the 6gb = 5.5gb (due to format parameters). Still a much better set up than the Droid X 1.

It better have higher spec than G2x given that it should move more pixels in qHD vs WVGA in G2x. Either way, VZW needs to get this out soon to not lag too much behind dual core race with other carriers.

If it has a pentile screen and similar color/contrast to the Atrix I will pass. The Droid X had a pretty good and crisp screen. A pentile matrix, even in qHD is almost a step backwards, produces a scaling issue here and there for some apps (especially with 2009/10's standard of 512MB RAM instead of 768 or 1GB), and is certainly not an upgrade.

We shall see.

Agreed. It is really a false qHD, since like the amoled display tech, a significant portion of pixels are not active during operation. Such tech and resolution specs borders on false advertisement, as a result, since the display has the pixels, but the tech that turns the pixels on does not use them all.

You're right, of course, but that's not even my biggest complaint on the Atrix screen! I'm used to the pentile effect somewhat from owning a Fascinate since about a week after its release date. In fact, the pentile is a little less pronounced because of the higher resolution of qHD screens. The Atrix screen, pentile aside, just plain SUCKS. Its viewing angles, contrast, and color reproduction pale compared to HTC's new SuperLCD on the Thunderbolt. I was extremely disappointed with the screen when I did my comparative testing with the Atrix.

And because of scaling issues, which will eventually (hopefully) be addressed with software updates, many apps seemed laggy. Apps should NEVER seem laggy on a DUAL CORE TEGRA. qHD is not yet the bundle of roses spec pushing marketeers would like us to believe it is. Don't fall for it, folks.

Damnit, just when I find a phone I want I wind up hearing things to talk me out of it again...Wanted the Incredible 2, talked myself out of it to wait for DX2...now this. What is the deal with phone manufacturers holding back and putting out mediocre stuff?! Frustrating to say the least. I really like the DX...so I figured even with the slight upgrades on the DX2 it would satisfy me. Guess I'll have to wait and see.

Worry not. We're all in wait and see mode. Do we know for sure whether it will be pentile or not? No. Do we know whether it will have an encrypted bootloader or not? No. It may not have either one of those negative points. Unfortunately, the answer to "Will it release on May 12th?" is likely 'no' ... but we hope not! It would be nice of some of these speculated release dates turned out to be true.

I wish they would just say, "The release date will be May 27th" or something like that. Put it out far enough that you'll be absolutely sure it will be ready by then. Then, just release it either on time, or when it's ready. Imagine the satisfaction rates if a phone was released early.

I think it's absolutely shameful that they can give Apple and their fans an extremely firm release date, well in advance, multiple pre-order options, trade in credit for recently purchased smartphones from competitors (up to $200!!), and then release that phone ON TIME, and yet they can't even give a simple release date for other high end devices, some with even more high end hardware in them than the iPhone???

Berizon is one screwed up company these days.

Yep. Apple is very vertical in structure, so can get er' done more efficiently.

Volunteer devs, sometimes without source code, can release custom kernels and ROMs more stable and daily-use ready than stock stuff often in a few days of their spare time. It's ridiculous that companies and partnerships as big as Berizon and Samsung or Motorola (actually moto is a little better at supporting their stuff, at least once it's out) can't come anywhere near the software fit and finish of some volunteer devs.

I see where you're coming from with Apple, but it's ridiculous that others can't do better. If the iPhone was slightly better at a few things and just a tad more open to customization, I'd get one of those to spite the shens of manufacturers doing subpar and untimely work. Their hardware has so much potential, yet they can't get the software side of it together.

Need even more evidence to my reasoning? Well, the devs do even better when they do have the source code. A couple weeks after we got it, the devs have now dropped the Community ROM.

That literally makes your Fascinate into a "HOLY CRAP BATMAN! THIS PHONE IS AWESOME!!!" device. If 7 or 8 devs can release that without getting much in the way of pay or donations for their time, surely samsung could do better with their multi-billion-dollar and currently quite successful smartphone sector.

I think they are doing just that with the SGS2, actually. I believe they've learned from the Galaxy S and all its ridiculous and unnecessary variants, and the multitude of software complaints. I bet we see a way more polished experience with that phone. I hope, anyways.

Apple controls everything and only has one product per year to manage and controls their iOS. Does not seem Apples to apples for comparison (pun intended).

Again, the work of manufacturers isn't "untimely", the phones aren't "delayed", we just become impatient when we hear of the new phones coming out. Apple is so tight-lipped (because they can be since it's a single company developing) we don't hear anything but a "it may happen" leak until a week before the release which will only happen once the product is 100% final. If it's a groundbreaking device we may hear 1-2 months before release (iPad was announced maybe 1-2 months ahead).

When the iPad 2 was announced, the media got an invitation 3 days in advance for an "event", the timing was about right for a 2nd-gen iPad so it was only then that speculation stirred regarding an iPad 2 release but at that time it was a final product.

We all complain when a device or new version release is buggy, but we're partly to blame, the consumer is putting pressure on the manufacturer to get the product out YESTERDAY because we hear it's coming and become impatient. If they never leaked information on the upcoming release and just dropped it when it was ready we'd see much fewer instances of a buggy first-release.

No, I think rather it's that Verizon is well behind in the race for decent phones. Tmobile has all the tasty lg's, atnt has the atrix and now infuse. Verizon has the... Thunderbolt. And it's already outdated.

The Thunderbolt is not outdated. It's still one of the top single cores out there (the top available in the U.S. until AT&T drops the Infuse). It's a good phone. It's just not competing with the dual core beasties that everyone else is getting. Accommodating that LTE tech is really taking its toll on Berizon's competitiveness.

I suggest VZW selling their $oul to Apple is root cause to most issues. Everything Android related has fallen of the rails since iPhone was prepped and launched. Android seems a second tier interest now and is reflected in the mid-level hardware they are pushing now.

They couldn't even get that right. They were six months late, and to justify their six months they only accomplished an extremely minimal improvement in the antenna, and testers aren't entirely sure that's not just because of the more robust network.

But yes, I confirmed it with inside sources - for real, not just speculation - that some substantial changes came about company wide to accommodate the iPhone, none of them good. Things have gone downhill since Berizon started catering to Apple.
