Root Root HTC Aria 2.2 OTA

Hi everyone, this is my first ever post so please feel free to correct me wherever and add constructive criticism.:)

So as many people before have posted, there is no way to root an android phone with the OTA 2.2 update (as far as I know).
Well after lots and lots of reading I have managed to confuse my self into a circle.
I am looking to root my HTC Aria purely for the purpose of being able to remove system apps such as plurk, footprints, stocks and twitter etc. But I have read that there is a way to root froyo phones if they have version 1.72 (or whatever, I'm not really sure) or below. (is that the HBOOT version??)
Also that they need to have a S-off to perform a permroot through VISIONary r14 or similar programs. From what I understand that is utilising the rageagainstthecage exploit which I have been led to believe will not work on the OTA version of 2.2. Just to be clear, I am talking about 2.2 not 2.2.1 :)
So if anyone could help it would be very much appreciated.
Here are the factors that I believe are the ones that need to be correct to root.

Android Version - 2.2
Kernel Version - 2.6.32.21-g9c9b792
htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Bulid Number - 2.37.708.5 CL279279 release-keys

LIBERTY PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.02.0000
MICROP-031b
TOUCH PANEL-STN21_03
RADIO- 7.13.35.13

thanks guys :)

Each HTC model has different build number scheme. I applaud you for searching before posting your question. The version 1.72 that you asked about is probably from the HTC Desire or Desire HD. The Aria build number 2.37 would be comparable to 1.72.

You are also correct that gaining S-OFF (security off) is the easiest way to gain root, however, there isn't a published software solution for the Aria that will achieve S-OFF. The only method to S-OFF is to use a hardware device called the XTC Clip that turn security off.

Since you have an Aria with HBOOT 1.02, there is no software solution for you to gain root. I would suggest you check into those that may offer XTC Clip services.

tpbklake thank you so much for the help, and yes you were right about the build number..The 1.72 I got was from a forum regarding the HTC Desire.

Just one thing though, does this XTC Clip service have to run through adb??
Also one last thing. I have, I believe successfully temp rooted the Aria with VISIONary r14 and afterwards I tried an application to remove system apps and it said in a pop-up bubble, something about superuser permission granted. However the app said that it could not remove systems app when I tried

The XTC Clip is a hardware device that attaches to phone to perform diaganostics on it. One of the features is that it can turn S-OFF a phone. I do not believe it uses adb.

Although it is possible to gain temporary root on the Aria as you have found, this root access does not have Read/Write access to the /system partition, so that is why you cannot remove system apps.

I am also trying to root an htc aria
android version 2.2.1
BB 12.39a
Kernel 2.6.32
build 1.84

Tried unrevokered method was told "Device "ace" is not supported at this time"

So Am I out of luck also in rooting and installing gingerbread on my htc aria atat phone

It looks like you may have an AT&T HTC Inspire, not a Aria. The Inspire is also known as the HTC Desire HD, which is also known as the HTC Ace. Also the Android version and build number does not match the AT&T builds that have been released for the Aria. The original Aria ROM was build 1.25 and the current Android 2.2.2 build is 2.25.

My aria that was running 2.1 got a shattered screen when i dropped it. so i took it in for a replacement and the new aria that they gave me was already running android 2.2.2. is there anyway to root this or get internet tethering wireless on it?
Thank you for the help

This site will soon have a software solution available for rooting the Aria 2.2 update:

AlphaRev X - Coming soon...

but this is no release date on when this will be available. Your other option is to locate someone with an XTC Clip diagnostic hardware that can turn the phone's security flag off (S-OFF) so you can flash a custom recovery and rooted ROM. A good place to start is to check out the Aria IRC chat room:

freenode Web IRC (qwebirc)

Just what did you do exactly?
I was able to make mines S-off but when I did the command prompt once I typed this in

"cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid"
it would tell me that there was no such file.

so how did you pass this part? I know im close if S is Off then I know im getting close...

Oh and since this is my 1st posting HI EVERYONE!! lol :D

Just go download AlphaRevX to S-OFF the Aria 2.2.2 update:

AlphaRev X - Make it your phone

It's a piece of cake. Ran it Friday night without a hitch.

I have an unlocked unbranded Aria running 2.2. What are the instructions for my phone? I don't need a gold card, right?

The first place to start is this thread. If your current HBOOT version is 1.02, then you simply need to follow the instructions for running AlphaRevX to S-OFF your phone.

[UPDATE: 6/18/2011] AlpharevX **OPEN BETA** for Liberty Hboot 1.02 - xda-developers

If you have a HBOOT version that is not 1.02, then you can try this thread. It will update the HBOOT version to 1.02 and then you can run AlphaRevX to gain S-OFF.

[TOOL] Upgrade HTC Gratia HBOOT for AlpharevX S-OFF - xda-developers

Finally, after you run AlphaRevX, this thread will show you what to do to install ClockworkMod and add root access:

[Info] After AlpharevX: install Clockworkmod, root & more - xda-developers
