issue with texting

this phone is pretty sweet with all that it can do but my major issue is with texting. I use handcent and every once in a while if I get a text and I unlock my phone and open the message before it stops vibrating ill see the first few words on the preview bar but when the handcent finnaly opens the message wont be there. its happend to me prolly 10 times now and kinda sucks asking people to resend the message. It only seems to happen when I open everything quickly, and also once in a while if its doing a function like closing handcent and I hit the power button before it fully closes the phone will restart which also is kinda anoying. has anyone else whitnessed this and does anyone know of a fix?

I almost hate to tell you my opinion, but perhaps it'll help you. When I finally made the jump from the stock Messaging app to handcent, I thought I was in heaven. I really liked that app, and couldn't believe how weak the stock one was in comparison. But probably about a week later, I starting having issues. Texts were late coming in, handcent was Force Closing, I was experiencing occasional reboots ... annoying. So, I read a few threads and decided to dump handcent and try chompSMS. It is very similar (very customizable) and I haven't had a single issue in weeks now.

Word, same issues, made the same jump, and haven't looked back yet.

Same here with handcent. All was fine for a week then incoming quick reply sms would pop up with some other contact name. Or wrong background pic for the contact when chatting. Bluetooth started acting strangely. I uninstalled it. It was way cool when it worked. Because of this I'm a little leary of trying another one like chomp, but give me some time. Its stable all the time?

I know how much it sucks to really like an app, then have to change. Fortunately, moving from handcent to chompSMS is a fairly painless move.

The only feature it lacks for me is the repeating notifications and the dev said they would include that in the next update , hopefully before Christmas. Still eagerly waiting....

Sorry John , no Chomp widget :(

Has anyone found a way to have Chomp set the format to notmal Android format display that doesn't use the bubbles but is line/block oriented... that's what I like about Handcent vs. Chomp...

PS.. Probably obviously I too have been having the lost messages issue with Handcent where messages scroll in Notifaction line but then when you open App to read the message is gone...

I believe I found the problem for me... I was running 'Startup Auditor' which I had set to disable messaging assuming only handcent was needed when I had it set as default messaging app... once I stopped messing with normal messaging starting all seems back to normal... checking startup auditor came to me as an idea when I saw folks having problems with task killers set to kill supposed unneeded apps... seems you need to better understand the definition of un-needed....
