Hi, It's been a while... just a quick update.

XDA-Developers did it. Rooted my Iconia Tab A500, now rocking and rolling the way Android was intended... Super easy!

Check your HC version.
Honeycomb v3.0 you have to use Gingerbreak 1.20
Honeycomb v3.1 you have to use Iconiaroot-1.3

To upgrade to Honeycomb v3.2.1 you need to have a rooted device (any of the two HC versions as stated above) and use CWM to flash the pre-rooted/busyboxed stock version HC v3.2.1

cheers :)

Apologies if I'm being stupid by why are you running Gingerbread when the tab alreqdy has Honeycomb on it?

Also keen to know what benefit you're getting from rooting this when there are no roms available yet? I rooted my htc desire so I could flash it with a Gingerbread rom just not sure I have any need to root this just yet.

sorry... I meant Honeycomb. heh.

Root gives you full access to the device. Right now there is not much you can do being Rooted but some things you can do are remove any pre installed app and you can install a new kernal that allows tethering to ad hoc phones like the D1.

Eventually you will be able to install custom versions of HC and overclock the device to make it run faster.

What extra did you gain rooting it?

Added:
Adfree
Root Explorer
Exchange Active Sync

Added Functions:
Wifi Tether -> Xperia Arc
NTFS support

Backup:
boot.img
recovery.img

Uninstalled:
Docs To Go - bloatware (using Google Docs)
AUPEO! - bloatware (don't listen to radio)
LumiRead - bloatware (using Aldiko)
clear.fi - bloatware (rubbish app)

Freeze: (Resource/Batt hoggers)
AcerSync
Photo Browser 3D
Media Server
My Location
SocialJogger
TegraZone Games
Top HD Games

I have regained 25% battery life each charge cycle...

and... did a whole bunch of stuff that I cannot mention because it might incriminate me :)

Now the freezing of unused apps sounds interesting is that easy enough to do once rooted?

Do not uninstall any app unless you really know it is useless bloatware... it is safe to uninstall LumiRead & Docs To Go.

So far the stuff that can be safely removed from system/app are:

AcerRegistration.apk
AcerSync.apk
Aupeo.apk
DocsToGo.apk
Email.apk
Email.odex
GameLoftStore.apk
HeroOfSparta.apk
HTMLViewer.apk
HTMLViewer.odex
LatinImeTutorial.apk
LetsGolf.apk
LinkToAdobeFlash.apk
LinkToAdobeFlash.odex
LinkToFacebook.apk
LinkToFacebook.odex
LumiRead.apk
MusicA.apk
NFS.apk
SocialJogger.apk
TegraZone.apk

For the rest of the apps (you may not want to remove) that are memory hoggers and/or battery sappers for example: Acer Sync (which I don't use) and Photo Browser 3D is always running in the background. So I froze them.

Use:
Bloat Freezer – Root v0.9 - requires root!

Wifi Tether? How? the A500 doesn't have a cell connection.
How does the Xperia fit in?

Rooted mine last night:

1. Activated unknown sources
2. Activated debugging
3. Set the tablet in portrait mode and lock it
4. Downloaded, installed and ran the 1.20 apk

It is THAT simple.

Rooted and then installed my Titanium Pro (put the pro liscense txt file in the sdcard root) & Busybox. All backed up now.

Need CWM and nandroid backup now.

I have a noob question. If I root my Acer, can I 'unroot' it later? Basically can I restore it to factory settings?

I decided to give Best Buy's "Buypack" program a go and intend to turn this puppy in sometime in the fall but of course I'd want to have it 'reset' before I did that.

I'd love to nuke some of these pointless apps from the thing.

Also do you think we'll manage to get Honeycomb 3.1 on a rooted system before an official upgrade arrives?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to this whole scene.
