MyTouch 3g vs MyTouch 4g

Well, I tried out a new MyTouch 4g & decided to stick with my trusty MyTouch 3g instead. I just like the feel of it better. The bigger phone was... a bigger phone. Great at times, not so great at other times. Bigger isn't always better

I love the feel of my old phone, as it fits my hand perfectly. Plus I love the non-slick surface (soft-touch) on the old phone's back. The new phone was somewhat awkward plus super slippery. Yes, I know I could put a skin on it, but then it didn't fit in the belt case without pressing against the power button.

Yes the older phone is slower, but not that bad actually if you keep nuking the open apps with a task killer.

So, at least for now, I'm (happily) sticking with my old phone. Besides, tons of new stuff coming out this summer. Maybe I will try something new again then.

The OG Mytouch 3g was my first android phone (i just couldnt bring myself to buy the g1 with that chin). i loved it as it was the phone that really brought me into android, and now that its running the froyo update its really not that bad a phone other than the small screen and slower processor. If youve held out this long then wait till summer as thats when all these gems being announced at mwc will be out. I have to say i find the mytouch 4g to be superior in every way to the mytouch 3g except in one thing. i really miss the custom back covers of the mytouch 3g. Thats were it got its name because you were able to add your own touch to the phone

You're right... there is no comparison. The 4g is a better phone hands down, but not for me. I know you're not suppose to dial while driving, but I can with the smaller phone. Not so easy to handle the 4g that way though. Seems to work best with both hands free.

Just wish the 3g was faster, but kept the size. Plus that back on the 4g is just to slick.

Thought it might be helpful for somebody else to know that the smaller phones are still nice, and a great value on craigslist too. I wish I liked the larger phones more because I love the speed!

Yes, I know this is an old thread but thought I would comment anyway. We have a three line family plan and all phones are MyTouch 3Gs. I just ordered refurb 4Gs to replace all three. When the 4Gs arrive I'll sell the 3Gs on Craig's List for about twice what I paid for the refurbed 4Gs.

I took a look at a 4G in the T-Mobile store and it is only slightly wider and longer than the 3G. I'm looking forward to a phone that boots up in seconds. I've watched video reviews of the 4G and it looks to me to be WAY more phone than the 3G. I've enjoyed my 3G but this was too good a deal to pass up. I'll report back on impressions once I have the 4G all setup and have a little time to work with it.

I had the 3G before I had the 4G. And sorry but the 3G is a piece of shit compared to the 4G. Android on the 3G was VERY restricted and many times almost unusable. I still have my old 3G but now I use it as a paper weight.

Actually, Carmen, I expect they will go for about that price. I got our first 3G from eBay last August and our other two from Craig's List in December. I've looked at completed eBay listings and current Craig's List listings and there is still a market for them. I'll be sure to report on that as well. Hopefully, I'll have the last laugh.

I've realized with craigslist...Generally the price you set up there will always be negotiated down...

and there are morons who try to get over.....set a stupidly high price, hoping to take advantage of the common craigslister.....I usually reply to those ads for the laughs lol

I'll do that. I've bought and sold on Craig's List, but always meet at a Starbucks (or some such place) rather than in their home or mine. We've had some bad stuff happen out here.

UPDATE:

Bought a MyTouch 4g on craigs list a few months ago and love it! One huge hangup I had before was the whole 2 year contract thing. Paid $300 cash and couldn't be happier. Figured I could sell it down the road and get something else as I desire without any headaches.

It took a little getting use to Sense, but I'm ok with it now. A couple issue trying to auto load a phone number from a post into the dialer though. That part sucks compared to stock Android.

Love the fast access to the GPS navigation. 3g was a real dog when it came to this. Also web browsing is awesome. I use the phone for many of the things I used to use the computer for. Also Swipe is amazing!!

I put a TPU slim case on the phone so now I can actually hold onto the thing

One huge hangup I had before was the whole 2 year contract thing.

Since we were not planning on giving up our cell phones or switching from T-Mobile, a new 2 year contract didn't bother us.

Oddly, the T-Mobile Courtesy Center does not input orders directly into their computer system. They wind up on printouts that go to another group that actually inputs the orders. With the current activity level it will be a few more days before the orders even get into their system. So please stand by.

Well, the process has been interesting. I was never able to see an order on the T-Mobile site and never received emails such as order confirmation or shipping notification. However, the 4Gs showed up on the 16th. One of them was supposed to be shipped to our son in Houston, but all three shipped to us. The 4G is supposed to come with an 8GB micro SD card. One of them did, but the other two had 2GB cards. I was able to go to a T-Mobile store, buy two 8GB cards and have the cost credited back to our account. The nice folks at support arranged that.

I have been going through the charge it for 12-15 hours and run it until it dies routine to condition the batteries on two of the phones. See the sticky on battery life for my results. I can tell you that after 32 hours, my wife's phone, that gets lighter use is still going. It may reach 36 hours or more. Mine managed something like 16 hours with much heavier use. I have no concerns about battery life.

The 4G is WAY more phone than the 3G. I have all my apps installed and the phone boots MUCH faster than my 3G and runs everything faster. The size is fine - only a little larger than a 3G. I would have preferred to have the mini USB port on the bottom rather than on the side, and to have it use the same plug as the 3G. I preferred the Google calendar, but Sense is not causing me any heartburn otherwise. I do have one app (a turn-by-turn navigation app) that runs in only part of the screen. I have no idea why, but can live with it.

I've experimented with voice chat (a neat feature that we may use from time to time), the FM radio (it seemed to work just fine), and the media room (I like having the controls available to pause music, etc.). I have not done much with the camera yet. I've used Aldiko to read an ebook and the larger screen is nice for that.

All in all, I really like the phone and am glad we made the change. I have to clean up the 3Gs and do master resets on them, and will then sell them. I'll report back on how much I get for them, Carmen.

i used to have the mytough3G and just recently around december grabbed my new mytouch 4G and imediatly fel in love with it i love the feel more and the faster internet and all of that! well whatever you think tho is what you think

Carmen, baby, how does breast of crow saltimbocca sound?

One down and two to go. I sold a black 3G with wall charger and USB cable, spare battery, silicone skin, adapter for charging and listening to music at the same time, and the original zipper hard case for $125 in less than 24 hours.

I have a merlot phone listed with Monaco leather flip case, silicon skin, wall charger and USB cable, car charger with retractable cable, spare battery, and a spare SIM card for $125. We'll see.

I'll have to wait until our son ships his white 3G with 3.5mm jack home. Its case is less than spectacular and I may spend ten bucks and put a new black case on it. Black seems to be the preferred color.

Without all the extra stuff, the phone would be around 100 bucks or less but of course when you add all that other stuff in it, it does become a bit more

Two down and one to go. I just sold the merlot phone for $120. It may be a little while before the white one gets here, but I suspect it will go pretty easily as well.
