The Desire is over a year old already, and we're still getting android 2.3 soon.
My previous phones were all samsung... never ever had an update for them.
Yes, eventually supprot will drop, but that's how it goes.

Oh, and to answer the OP's question: My contract lasts another year, haven't even looked at new phones yet. It's dead easy: If I buy something new now, tomorrow it will be outdated.

I'm looking forward to the OH getting the Sensation next month, but my contract is until March 2012. By then i'm sure there will be something worth upgrading for. Best of both worlds.

First, I'd get more memory by default with whatever device I bought. This wouldn't help much as I still have a reasonable of free memory now. I have pretty much all the apps I need. Internal memory is not an issue. I would like a bigger SD card later this year, that doesn't require a new device though.

Second, the new CPUs aren't 'that' much faster, even the dual cores. I have heard the 2nd core is not even utilized yet. Is 2.3 written to taken advantage of a dual core CPU? Thats like putting Win98 (old example, still valid ) on a dual CPU system, a waste.

2.3 is very fast on my Desire and ROMs like DevNull, Redux, Oxygen, GingerVillain are all stable. Never had the OS FC, only the odd app sometimes. I don't think a year makes a difference (although marketing will make you think so). 2.5 years when my 3 year contract is up then I'll upgrade into whatever is the best phone going.

I'm quite content with my year old Desire. I did have a silicone case for it but have given up on that. It still looks like new. The OLED screen is superb - I don't know how the later version's LCD compares. Improvements I'd appreciate would be slightly better camera performance (not a real problem until you compare it to a Nokia N8), especially video, and the lack of internal memory for apps that won't install onto the SD card. I think speaker quality could be improved, and later Androids have better multi-touch support, but none of the negatives are critical for me - it's a fabulous phone.

So when you say screen you just mean the touch input and not the actual screen?

Not had many issues with multi touch myself. What apps can I test to see if they fall down?

I would have thought emulators were a good place to start. Resident evil on PSX4Droid, I cant use all the buttons I need at once, resulting in not being able to execute head shots. I think you need 3 buttons to Headshot.

The internal memory problem is fixed if you root and apply app2sd+ scripts.
The multi-touch is indeed limited to only 2 fingers, but I have not used apps that require more than 2 finger touch to function.

Not even 2 fingers work properly - the screen works in quadrants and as long as your fingers are in two different quadrants, it works, but it will never ever work correctly if you cross the quadrants. That's why emulators offer the option to have controls in the top right and lower left by default - because that causes the least issues. Both at the bottom WILL give issues (I tested this thoroughly). There's a clip on Youtube that shows in detail what happens.

Which ROM are you using?
Which APP2SD script are you using? - Matters to see its efficiency.
Do you also move the Dalvik cache to SD card? - Can give you an extra 70MB space.
Are you using modified HBoot? - Can give you another 70MB space easily.

There are ways to fix this issue, if you really go for it.

Don't feel left behind, more interested in phones when ice cream sandwich comes out than this generation. What is the point of duel core if software does not utilise it?

Ics has me interested though so im more than satisfied with desire until early next year, that will be two years for me, not that im tired to any contract anyhow. I have the choice to update now but I will still wait for ics...

Apart from low on memory, I have no complaint with the desire.

The short answer is alpharev.nl, as long as your phone is GSM. A lot of us in the root forum have done this, so do feel free to come over and ask.

It does give up some other memory, but it's memory you aren't using. By default the desire allocates 250 MB to /system, where the ROM lives, but many ROMs use a lot less than that - my current one uses 140 MB, and the smallest ones less than 90 MB. You can't use the empty space in this partition for user apps or data, so it's effectively wasted (and that's also why deleting system apps doesn't free any space for you).

The alpharev tables (or a full custom mtd) change the sizes of the internal partitions (system, cache and data). For example, I'm using a table with 180 MB /system, with the extra 70 MB given to /data - effectively I have 70 MB more usable internal storage than HTC gave me. If I were to start using Redux as my regular ROM I'd be tempted to switch to the "oxygen hboot" which would give me double the /data size of a stock desire (but TBH only because I can - right now I've got 109 user apps installed and 144 MB internal free, so am not exactly short of space).

The catch is, as you can see above, that it depends on what ROM you are using - some need the full 250 MB. One quick check is to install Quick System Info and see how much "System Storage" you are using.

I bought my fone sim-free. It does everything I want pretty good, tho' I am interested in a 4:3 screen...id have a Samsung S11 i think its called? next cause the radios are better on them than HTC's! Fone tech is pretty outstanding now...wonder what the futures gonna be like? If the fone manu's wide hurry on 2.3 update I think that'd sort a good few people inc. me lol. I don't believe in rooting...why should I have to voiding a warranty to make something better?
