NVIDIA Tegra 2 vs Epic GPU

I won't buy anything Nvidia, not even if I was tortured into it. All their products are SH!T.

cool thanks for answering the question.

anyways glbenchmark 2.0 shows the latest scores off the hummingbird 540 (the samsung galaxy lineup) vs tegra 2 and the new qualcomm 220

3m6xy4o

i underlined the parts of the chart that you asked about, as you can see in the tech demo it meant the difference of 4-5 FPS.. go nuts, there has yet to be a game on android that maxes out a gpu still

here let me put it this way as well on glbenchmark.com the ipad2 is only 4 slots above the nexus s, and the ipad 2 has the newest most b!**ching gpu on the market

Sorry but I almost died laughing, the famous iPhone is... last.

As for not buying Nividia's sh!t... thats your opinion and without any legit reasons don't bother saying anything.

OK, well let me explain my legit reason(s) & please let me know if you approve of them.

1) My first laptop: Dell Inspiron 5100, came from manf. with Nvidia FX5200 installed (payed extra for it). Right out of the box, the graphics were choppy and less than 48 hrs from receipt, I was on the phone with Dell Tech Support because the LCD stopped working. They sent 2 cards first a replacement Nvidia which lasted all of a week before the same problem arose, then the technician installed the second replacement, which was an ATI Mobility Raedon. I had no problems with the laptop after that; still have it, still use it...problem solved.

2) My bosses laptop: an HP Pavilion TX model with an Nvidia MPU...that's media processing unit...installed. He had trouble with his laptop for years and asked me to look at it after multiple system crashes. I couldn't find anything wrong with the OS no matter how many reinstalls I did. I finally took it to a friend who is a reliable hardware repair tech, and he later on informed us that there was an issue with part of the latop's motherboard (the MPU) that was also causing problems on Apple and Dell laptops with the same hardware installed. My boss ended up getting another new laptop with out anything Nvidia inside...problem solved!

3) My sister desktop: I bought my sister a Dell Dimension 4700 as a wedding present without realizing it came with an Nvidia GeForce 8400 (preinstalled from the outlet). The system constanly had display problems and was prone to overheating, which was quite a feat for a desktop. The system overheated so badly one time that the hard drive failed and could not be recovered. Dell still replaced the bad hard drive, and the on-site technician noticed the make and model of the video card and called in for a replacement to an ATI card. They sent out an ATI x600, which was only offered as a defective replacement for the stock Nvidia, but 6 years later and that desktop is still running strong...problem solved!

4) We finally come to the last and greatest Nvidia migraine: My old Dell XPS M1710 with its Nvidia GeForce 7900 GS. For the first 4 months I had this system, it was pure nirvana. Then hell hath no fury: daily overheating, BSDO's 6-7 times a week. Dell replaced the card and motherboard and processor at least 3 times a piece over a 3 year period, as well as replacing the LCD once and the RAM twice. I finally got a postcard in the mail regarding a lawsuit against Nvidia for selling defective GPU's to Dell and other comp. manfs. I was included in this class action because of my M1710. Two more months of repairs and I finally give Dell enough hell over all of this and they give me a system exchange and replace my M1710 with an Alienware m17x with an ATI 5850 XFire cards. So awesome and I've had no video problems with it yet...problem solved!

So if you lost count, there were FOUR separate systems from TWO different manufacturers that had problems and the only commonality was...wait for it...their Nvidia cards! Now maybe there could have been some other underlying cause that instigated all of these comp. problems, but with so many different technicians finding problems within the same brand components time and again, its hard to believe it was anything but Nvidia's fault; you know that old saying,"If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck..."

Whic is why we should not take anything said here personally. We'll see how things go for Nvidia down the line. As far as this last benchmark test goes though, I think the Qualcomm's show some promise, but nothing tends to beat the reliability of a TI. I'm gonna keep an eye of the LG Optimus' because I've heard so many horror stories about LG brand TV's, Refer's, and Air Conditionings. Everyone tells me that LG builds a crappy product thats not worth the time of day, but my cousin's LG ENV Touch is like a gift from god. I don't think she'll ever replace that phone.

the issue the iphones are running into is that the benchmark taht i posted glbenchmark, runs in its native resolution which then throws the iphone 4 for a loop and has to resize it all accordingly, making the gpu seem much weaker then it is. which is why the 3gs at its lower res performs "better"

the qualcomm looks nice on paper but you need to understand its also a faster cpu as well, 1.5ghz dual core vs 1ghz dual core of a tegra 2 vs single core 1ghz humming bird. so by all rights i think samsungs next model will be very stunning. shame android still cant offload the system to the gpu..

So let me get this right... you bought electronics from some of the worst manufacturers and want to blame the gpu? Try blaming Dell and HP for making a product that is unreliable and untested leaving the factory in many instances.

Every time I buy a new electronic device it's a decision that takes at least a month or two just to sort through all the marketing and hype to find a truly high quality device. Having laptop issues isn't cause for bashing an industry leader in mobile graphics technology...

I've got newer Dell's, a Toshiba, and a custom built PC now. None of them have anything Nvidia and they all work just fine & dandy. So yes, I do blame Nvidia, and I'm not the only one; check out this web page for more 'losers like me': The NVIDIA GPU Litigation - Home Page

Odd... I use NVidia exclusively, and not a problem...

PS - Your site you linked to was only an issue with like 2 chipsets used in Dell, HP, and Apple computers only.

I don't even notice a difference in speed between my tegra 2 tablet vs my epic in games.. given the tablet has a much higher resolution.

I don't like benchmarks b/c they don't really mean anything(then again my tegra 2 device is running honeycomb :\)! Anyways, heres what I took from my xoom 1.5ghz (tegra 2) vs my epic 4g (1.3ghz)

Tegra2 Xoom Quad:

Tegra 2 Xoom Linpack:

I wouldn't worry about comparing them.. like shabby said they are the same when it comes to actual performance.. not benchmarking scores.

So far, I've seen nothing to convince me that dual core Nvidia powered phones are a huge leap above the Epic.

Synthetic benchmarks are a piss poor way of determining real world performance as well.

I seriously home the USA version of the Galaxy S2/Epic goes with the Exynos 4210 and not the Tegra 2.

i cannot imagine samsung skipping their new top of the line cpu in favor for another company's stuff

Would imagine the Tegra chipsets would go to the lesser markets. It definitely won't go to verizon. The Bionic was a Tegra 2 LTE phone and it was canceled because the heat produced by the Tegra 2 and LTE chip proved to be too much and was scrapped. So if the GSII is LTE for Verizon then it would get the Exynos. And I can't imagine Sprint would be accepting of the Tegra 2 when its competition has the better processor in its phone. Just throwing that out there. Tegra2 plays just fine with HSPA+ though...

good information all, thanks. i started this thread initially because i found a game that said tegra based android only. i installed on the epic and it said your device not supported, didn't even give me a chance to tried playing it.

This is idiotic and a big part of why I have serious reservations about buying and supporting Tegra-2 devices.

Nvidia does not need to be carving out their own niche in the android eco-system. Android already has fragmentation issues, and this will make things even worse, and diminish android's market potential over time.

Anyone remember the days on PC before DirectX where games were written for specific graphics cards? It absolutely sucked.

Unless Google mandates Tegra-2 be the baseline standard for all android devices going forward, this sub-eco-system tactic by Nvidia needs to be killed immediately. As if android didn't already have app problems.
