Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

You went there with your magic? the quality is good. I thought they are in toronto :D
The pics were taken with an old Kodak. I didn't bother with buying a local SIM although they have us beat for ease and cost. Since it was easy to find WiFI even in the smallest village, just look for a coffee shop or library, I used a SIP app. It worked so well I didn't bother with a cell data plan. I paid $0.01/min on my VoIP plan to call anywhere in NA and only $0.024 to anywhere in Iceland. Inbound calls and calls to my own people on the server back home were free.

There is nothing like swimming in a 10 acre outdoor pool in the middle of winter. And having high speed WiFI and a smart phone....

read this on howards forum.....

Hi Everyone.
I'm here to share some urgent news with our Rogers HTC Dream customers.

We have contacted all of our Dream customers by text message asking them to disable GPS location on their HTC Dream device to ensure all 911 calls complete.

HTC is expediting a software fix to the 1.5 Android Operating System that will address this issue - and provide several other improvements to the OS.

We expect this upgrade to be available very soon. In the meantime, Dream customers need to follow these steps:
1) Select Menu
2) Select Settings
3) Select Location
4) Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite

Please note that the Rogers HTC Dream is the only device affected.

Protecting our customers' safety is our top priority and we communicated with our customers as soon as we were made aware of the issue. We have texted all affected customers and we have immediately requested that the device be taken off the shelf until HTC implements its upgrade.

Thank you,
Mary

Not sure if you guys noticed, but HTC has updated the Sync utility on their support website for the Rogers Magic (HTC Mobile Phone Support - HTC Magic? (Rogers) - Downloads)

When they say "Mobile Network sharing function", I can only conclude that this means they have finally made tethering available. Afraid it will only work on Windows if this is true.

Has anyone installed this latest version of the HTC Sync Utility? If so, can you confirm the "Mobile Network Sharing" function? Too bad they don't have a similar utility for Macs! *ughh*

Or is it not available

The android 1.5+Sense update is not available for the moment. More details will be posted once it will be released from HTC and on Rogers site.

If your talking about getting a hardware update (trade in your Dream for a Magic) log on into Rogers website and select the "Upgrade phone". You will see a special Dream offer to get a Magic at no charge.

To clarify this... _1.6_ will NOT be released on the web site for the Rogers HTC Magic or Dream. Android _2.1_ will be released at some point later in the year for the _Magic_ only. Within the next week we are expecting a minor Android 1.5 update for both the Magic and the Dream.

“The cost of the upgrade is $0, and you will receive your phone in a few days”
Yay! Online upgrade failed, got transferred to 4 people, someone told me I had to pay the full price of the phone, waited on hold for half an hour, but in the end I got it! :)

Thanks RogersMary, mjschmidt, GBD, and everyone else for this!

Yeah, I'm wondering how do you know that I have a Dream.

1. I bought it on Craigslist.
2. Rooted, unlocked, using custom ROM.
3. Never been Rogers customer. I'm on Fido. Never told Fido what phone I have.

Can you please explain? Does the phone tell the network what type it is?

The network can tell what phone it is by its IMEI ( International Mobile Equipment Identity ) number.

Thanks to everyone for your hard work pressuring Rogers & HTC! I was operating in the background, pressuring rogers & HTC support & the office of the president as I read this forum every day. :)

They have agreed to replace my phone, no additional time on my contract or any other obligation. I have my new phone already.

I DO have to return the Dream in 15 days, which is fine I have no use for more than one.

A question: I have is, any recommendations on a utility to copy my files to the Magic? I'd like to keep my text messages, pictures, ringtones etc. I have tried mybackup but it doesn't work even the 30day trial fails.

Any suggestions for transfer options?

Thanks! :)
