Root concerns about rooting desire

I have desire

and I would like to root using unrevoked method

I also have my RUU for restoring back to stock

but I'm worried, is there any place on the phone HTC can detect I had a root? I mean unrevoked installs clockworkmod, and I think that goes onto the recovery partition.

simply, will installing the official RUU from HTC wipe the ENTIRE phone (100%), including all partitions that are not immediately obvious?

if this is the case, I might root. thanks!

PS. if the original RUU doesn't restore 100%, what part of the phone is left unrestored? I know SD card is not involved

if you have a valid RUU for the phone it installs the htc recovery, hboot, rom, wipes the data and puts it back to how it was from box.

there is nothing saved other than what is on the media card which you keep anyway.

Just be aware that what you are doing does void warranty at a software level and not hardware if its not running on the firmware set for your phone. (i have to tell you this)

well my phone was unbranded, and I got the WWE version

it was the same radio/model that I previously had, the one which updated htc desire to android 2.2

and I even checked what the bootloader said, and searched the net for those terms, including the s-on part, and found many matches

the file I used was RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe

and when I did md5 on that, not many searches turned up

where are these RUU's coming from?

and more importantly, if I root my phone, and android 2.3 comes out for it, where do I get the RUU file for the new version?

it's just that security is a priority with files like these.

so there's the possibility that desire 2.3 android won't leak as RUU?

this meaning of course that I would have to skip 2.3 because there's no way to return to stock otherwise

you can return to stock 2.2 from 2.3 cos 2.3 is a custom rom and the device will allow your RUU to bring it back to how it was out of the box

as long as you dont flash a different RUU higher than the current RUU/rom you have then you will be able to return to stock from any custom rom

I did not meant any custom rom of 2.3

I meant the next version of android, which is 2.3 and not yet officially on the desire

You can use a downgrade tool to go back to 2.2

BTW don't accept ota update on rooted phone for 2.3.

To do that you'll have to use your 2.2 RUU before doing an OTA update to 2.3. Never accept an OTA update on a rooted phone, as it's a recipe for trouble - turn off the checks if you stick with a stock ROM.

So you are assuming that once there is an official 2.3 for the Desire you'll move to that? It won't have anything that 2.3-based ROMs won't have (either already or very shortly afterwards), and will certainly not offer some of the options we have.

It's your choice, of course.

you didnt specify updating to 2.3 via ota before so i assumed as you are rooted you were refering to custom rom and not the leaked test rom or ota update.

indeed what you are saying is a little different, there are 2 things to consider

1st off never accept an ota update when rooted, it WILL cause you problems so as SUroot says re flash the RUU and then you will be able to do the ota to 2.3 (if it does actually get rolled out)

2nd we assume teppics downgrader will work as its never failed yet and downgrades to a 2.1 rom so you can then flash any of the froyo RUU's. in this case you would be able to get back to 2.2 froyo then ota update to 2.3. this could be subject to change mind you and they fix the exploit in official 2.3 but only time will tell
