Tasker v Juice Defender

Hi Guys - quick question. Checked the other forums and there are a couple of threads but not that directly answer my queries and nothing with regards the mighty Desire

I did have Juice Defender installed and didn't think it was doing much. Have now uninstalled it and am seriously surprised at how fast my battery drains.

But I am also thinking about Tasker to automate. Does Tasker do what JD does or do I need both? Or, if Tasker doesn't do this, what the hell does it do that justifies the money??!

tasker will allow you to do pretty much anything that the phone does. You can quite easily set up a task to close then reopen wifi state/gps/data etc at given times, or even locations, as well as setting up rules if you like to change phone state (ie when conected to car dock, turn off wifi, turn on bluetooth, connect to headset, read out text, auto reply to text etc.) as long as the pohone is capabloe of doing something manualy, you can set tasker to automate it.

Ive never used juice defender so not really sure what it offers but I do recommend the using of tasker, as long as you have spare time to dedicate to getting familiar to using it although there is always plenty of advice available. I found i removed a fair few apps after i purchased tasker as I found I could set it to do the same if not better than the apps did anyway.

Edit* tasker will be able to completely replicate what juice defender does. You can even download a pre written tasker profile that does it.

Although I would still recommend getting to understand it yourself before using other peoples profiles as usually there will be some edits you would want to make.

Aww schucks. Thanks. But there are many here who are as knowledgable, if not more so. I just post like a maniac so I make myself very visible. Lekky is not around so much as he now has a plethora of devices to post about

Its well worth the money.

I use it to turn wifi on and off, Set silent mode on and off and delete files at certain times of day.

I also used to set it so if in silent mode, an incoming call from an important contact will switch the ringer back on. if I do not answer, it sends an SMS stating I will call them back.

This is barely even scratching the surface. It can also be used for remote tracking and things like that.

Have downloaded but simply cannot understand how to make it work. I want it to do relatively simple tasks like turning off my auto-update when I turn the screen off and when I am out of wifi range to toggle the mobile data and auto sync to once every 30 minutes or so and i just don't understand the user interface.

All the help pages I look at seem to look different to my screen!! And i can only see one profile at a time instead of all of them.

Sorry for letting the side down guys but am getting really frustrated that I am so thick!!!! Any suggestions for help VERY gratefully received!

My suggestion is this... bear in mind the profile is the condition at which you want the tasks to run and the tasks are wjat happens automatically to the phone when it is in the condition related to the profile. I set up the tasks first and then set profile and add tasks then.

Your profile might be when screen is on.
Your task for that profile would then be turn on auto sync. This is under the net category and its near the top right I think.
You would then add an exit task to turn sync off again, which would obviously occur when screen goes off again.

Tanker is a steap learning curve but so worth the effort. I'm happy to help if I can, I'm still quite new to it all and I've had some amazing help on here. See how you get on and if still struggling ill try to find time to write a walkthough for you.

If you chose to have auto sync off unless screen was on then this is all you would have to do.

Have got my head around things a little more though the more battery saving issues I am leaving to JD for the moment and using tasker to automate other things.
