Old iphoner, Need all the HELP i can get!!!

Just got the HTC inspire and I think I may need to take a class! Had the iPhone since it came out and was ready for something new. Sooooo happy I bought the inspire but I am beyond confused. So many things are opposite the iPhone, example, just answering my phone was an issue bc the accept button is on the other side of the screen. I always hit the period instead of the space bar, don't know what a widget is, don't know if rooting is legal, I'm thinking its the same as jail breaking which I did a few.times and lost all sound to my phone and it did not return even after in jail breaking. I'm not stupid (even tho I may sound it) I just need guidance, help, hints tricks, anything that will make me enjoy this phone even more! I could probably work at Apple bc I seriously knew so much.about the iPhone. I want to be like that w the inspire too! The Manuel that came w the phone sucks, and most of the stuff I read is already above my level! I need inspire 101! I'm begging for help! Thank you on advance to anyone who can take the time and email advice! Can not wait to learn!!

Thank you everyone for the welcome. I hope.you don't regret it, haha, I might turn into an annoying stalker throughout this process. I really do want to learn as much as I can. First question, is there anyway I can change my keyboard, like pronto! It's so opposite from the iPhone I am always messing up? Any suggestions? I thibk I want bigger keys and a different layout. The space key and period key are the worst bc I am constantly putting periods in stead of spaces. To go back and forth between the keyboard screen and numbers and symbols screen, is on the opposite side also, so instead of switching views i close my keyboard! Very frustrating. I learned the difference between widgets and apps tho, thanks to the forums yous suggested! Woohoo go me! I actually feel like I'm an old person trying to.figure this out, like me 65 year old dad who just got the iPhone when he was used to using smoke signals..ha

Here's a thread thats in the "Android applications" section that is a bunch of links to threads discussing all the best apps by category. There's a couple threads in there about Keyboards....

Also one thing that I do. I'm using the Swype keyboard, but when I need to press a number or any symbols, I just press and hold for a couple seconds (long press) and that does it.

Do I have the swipe, or am I able to download it? My BC has the HTC Ego with Sprint and he has it. But when I bought this phone the other day the AT&T guy told me its not on my phone. He said my phone was a sister phone to the Evo, but the swipe i know I can do bc I figured it out and showed my BC how to use it on his phone.

I'm not sure what keyboard your phone comes with. If you press and hold (long press) where the text entry is (as if you were sending a text message ... says "Type to compose") then a box should pop up that says "Input method", press that. Another box will pop up that shows you all your keyboard choices that you have on your phone (your phone may come with more than 1, I'm not sure). You can then figure out what you have, and if you have multiple choices you can try another. If you don't like any of the choices you have, you can look in the Android Market for other keyboard options and download those and use those.

Another question for the pros! Thisb is erking my last nerve. When I first got the phone all my face book friends were in my phonebook. No biggie. Now all I want to do is sync some if my friends that didn't sync themselves. For example, my friends name is Nicole howlt. She does not have her number in facebook so she is not synced in my phone. I have her under Nikki in my phonebook. I synced some people but others it wont let me. This phone is about to get thrown at a wall. I read every post and hint I could find on the subject, and it only works, occasionally. Please help

If you go to the contact, click the menu button, then click link. From there, youll be able to go through your list. One of the first few questions I had as well. :p

I tried that and it only seems to catch here and there. Either I'm missing a step or I'm a big moron! I'm leaning toward the second choice! All I want to do is stop seeing those blank pictures, but I want to connect it correctly. Maybe my facebook needs to be opened right before I try to link everything, its always opened but when I checked facebook settings it refreshes every half hour.

Go to the phone number contact and then bring up the link contacts under menu. It wont bring that up for FB contacts. I tried that too. lol.

I did that alsobbut it seems to have a mind of its own. I have to be missing something, I doubt it is the phone. I'm going to go to the store tomorrow and ask for help. This is taking up way to much time. I read forums all day in work, and then play with it when I get home. I'm not giving up though bc I see so many things I like that weren't on my iphone. One last thought, maybe I should realize that I'm to old (26) and technology has finally caught up with me! I knew this day would come eventually! Just want to add also that I'musing my swipe keyboard! T&asks so much everyone

Coming from a 30 year old, STFU. lol. Youre not blond by any chance are you? JK! Are you making sure to go to the phone number contacts and not the FB/Yahoo contacts? If you press the menu button on the bottom of the phone, it should bring it up.

I believe some other members have already given you suggestions on changing the keyboard. I'm not sure if you will find one that is exactly the same as the iPhone keyboard. There appears to be no set standard on phones other than the letters, so if you cannot find one that exactly matches your old phone, you'll have to learn the new keyboard layout.

In my personal experience, I went from a Nokia N97 to an HTC Desire Z. Both of these phones have physical keyboards, so there is no option to rearrange the key layout. I did have a learning curve in getting used to the Desire Z's keyboard layout. I think it took me a few weeks before I started getting used to it. The biggest change was that the space bar is in the centre of the Desire Z keyboard and on the left on the N97. Whatever keyboard you use, you will probably have to make some type of adjustment and you will just have to tough it out for a few weeks while you make the adjustment. Just have patience and try not to get frustrated.

I'm in my forties and got my first smartphone last year. It took me a while to learn about how much these smartphones can do and how to make best use of it. With Android, I find it fun to figure out new things now and again. Have fun with Android.

I fell in love with thee swipe keyboard I found yesterday. I made the age comment bc recently in work w updated many things. Freshman year of collage I learned Microsoft word 2002, now in work I'mv trying to teach myself on the updated windows. Some things are the same but some things are totally different. I was gonna take a class just to get brought up to speed but ended up doing it myself. I refer to my dad bc I remember our first mobile phone being a big black bag phone we would use to travel. I don't know how he manages to keep up when he never even had a computer class in school. My mom learned how to type on a type writer......they must have patience1

I learned how to type on a typewriter as well. It was an electric. I couldn't type on a manual. I don't have the finger strength. Tried it once and kept jamming the hammers and was very slow as I wasn't used to the strength required to make the hammer strike the ribbon hard enough to leave enough ink on the page.

Typewriters didn't have backspace/delete keys either. I had to use a white ink ribbon and type over the text that I wanted to delete.
