How Many Apps is Too Much for Evo?

I've had a couple Sprint employees tell me that the number of apps I have on my device isn't good for the device. (Yes, i have alot) However, I have not had any of them give me any guidelines on what a "healthy" amount of apps is to have on the device.

It would help if they didn' put all those useless factory installed apps on the the device.

I had about 150 or so at one point. The only problem I noticed was my phone was a bit slow. I don't know why it would hurt your phone other than the speed. I have since trimmed down to about 70, and notice no problems with speed.

Why do people have apps on their phone they don't use on a daily basis? Its like driving around with your luggage in your car all the time but you aren't taking a road trip. I got through my phone every 2 weeks or so and I uninstall apps I do not use. If you have 100 apps, there is no way you use them every single day. Its like loading a bunch of crap on a laptop. Just because you have a laptop doesn't mean you should install 10 games on it. What happens when you have that many apps on a phone is the apps are more than likely to conflict with one another. Then you can't figure out which app is causing the problem because you have 100 apps on your phone. If my phone acts up I immediately know which app to uninstall because I look for lag and freezing after downloading an app. If they cause a problem, nine times out of ten I uninstall the app. If I get a notification while playing a game and my phone freezes up more than once. I uninstall that game and the problem goes away. Other games don't have that problem. I think I have about 30 apps if not less installed on my phone.

how many?? cant say.. each app is different size...

your phone has only so much memory for loaded apps... as it is used up.. you phone will start to lag.. when it falls below 100mb free.

so..i recommend to it above 140mb for good measure.

I use Appbrain to organize apps. You can delete them but have them ready to install with one click, if needed right away - instead of having to search and add.

At one time I had over 400....some for me...others for my son...and a few fore the wife to br.. .most were used regularly. Since getting them android phones its dropped to about 100..and another 150 that I haven't had time to reinstall.

At no time did the number of apps affect my phone performance.

We must remember that we don't know exactly how others use their device. 100 apps at 50K each isn't the same as 10 apps at 300MB each. If an app begins to grow too much I replace it with a smaller app that can perform the same tasks. App size is a concern on android, this is why the apps I write are as small as possible and I don't go adding tons of features.

It's not the number of apps you have on the phone but the type of apps. Some like to run all the time, some only when you click them. When I see something running and using battery that I didn't call up I usually uninstall it on the spot. Something residing in storage memory or sitting on the sd card isn't going to hurt the phone at all. Run 4 or 5 memory and cpu hogging apps and you might as well be using a rotary phone. Be smart.

Considering the fact that i test many many things for devs....and am learning to develop myself it isnt exactly unheard of. I am by no means an average user

I try to keep my apps pretty low, but I do back them up to my sd card in case I need them again. I flash too often and lose my apps, so this lets me restore the ones I need, when I need them.

Unfortunately the quality of info you get from Sprint techs varies with the time of the day.

A tech told me all the apps that are running are shown when you hold down home. Had to explain that that shows the last six always.

That ten or more could be running at any given time.



Ok the point? The number of apps is irrelevant unless you have 0 space left.

The more important issue is how many are Running.


Taskiller.


Hit taskiller in the menu bar and it will open and show whats you running.

Ive uninstalled a few apps that continued to run that had no business running.

Like magic 8ball.. wth your running alll the time? Later. gone.

Google voice runs a lot. I installed but the costs are less than the benefits so its back on.

But taskiller and fastreboot are necessary apps.


Taskiller kills running apps. Study them. Ignore ones that look like system apps (generic pic - com. in the beginning of name)

Fastreboot b/c after awhile taskiller doesnt do it.

It kills almost everything and comes back in about 15 seconds. Faster than a total reboot.

The 400 app answer is the point. You have RAM and you have Disc memory. RAM is used while the app is running. The disc memory is just storage.

Your birthday is in disc storage. However 446983 is in your 'ram' storage. You can only remember so many items in 'temporary' memory before your head explodes.

Same with your phone. You have 512? mb of ram but like 8gb of disc memory. The 512 is what effects performance. And of course your processor which is the engine.

that is not so true....

sdcard is for mostly your data.. pics, music..etc...

apps are stored/installed on your internal memory... ROM
apps run/background on internal memory ... RAM

some apps can be partially stored/installed on SDcard.. but only partial..Data part. not all apps have this ability to move the data to SDcard.

Erm.... I'm assuming your Evo (for some odd reason) is still on 2.1. In 2.2, however, both of mentioned applications have become a total hindrance to the Android platform, on a whole, because they don't work in 2.2.

I'm telling you people, and I mean ALL people, that this is NOT windows!! RAM is handled MUCH differently. Just because more is taken, does not mean that you should go around murdering applications to see the numbers go up. It's pointless, and with the advent of 2.2, the phone won't respond very kindly to you murdering applications, unless it's through the built-in task manager. It'll simply ignore what you did, let it seem like they're gone, waste some CPU cycles, burn some more of your oh-so-*hitched* about battery, then boot everything back up.


Believe me, if I can go a day (from about 9 to 10pm) on one battery, leaving everything on mind you, I think you can get a little more out of it, seeing as apparently more than 80% of the people here don't actually use their phones. I don't use a task manager... I have no issues. My phone runs faster than most people's, and guess what... I have yet to have any force closes from anything that I do.


I'm telling you, again, yes you, and you, and even you!! Android is not Windows. Let go of your previous mind-set when you grab your phone. It will only annoy you, and cause unnecessary hardship between you and your phone.


If you're running 2.1, 1.6, or 1.5, then yes, a task killer might be something I recommend, because in all reality, if it is running the old versions of android, it's more than likely not a super-star device.

By all means please explain how Evo random access memory is different than any other computer? Not thinking windows thinking Mac, Windows, Linux etc.

You are experiencing a wonderful thing and more power to you. However google EVO battery problems and your computer will explode as your experience is singular.

Well I guess if you dont use your phone you could have that kind of battery staying power. Making calls, surfing, reading news, taking notes, scheduling in my calendar uses lots of battery. It also pops a lot of programs to run.

Logically how can any device run just as well running 40 apps then when running 5 apps?

As far as kill and restart a few do. Most dont restart for a while. You can monitor in taskiller. If you dont use taskiller than please dont comment on an ap you are unfamilir with. I tried many many task killers and none ran like taskiller.

Again maybe we can agree to disagree. Still love my EVO it just takes some management like any computer.

Edit - ran into a waiter at a restaurant. His gf was having similar problems. Explained what I did here and her problems were alleviated greatly. Made her EVO usable.

It comes down to how Android, and Linux handle processes. It's fine if a process is running. You don't need tons of ram available, because when you need it, it will become available.

I don't buy into the myth that task killers make the phone run like crap. I think it's more in the type's of people that abuse task killers also don't know what the hell they're doing with their phones in the first place. Used correctly I don't think having a program like ATK on the phone is bad at all.

That said I personally don't use one on my evo but that's just my preference. When I need to kill a task I just go in and do it manually. I know the os pretty well and it just isn't that big of a bother to go in and see what's running and kill what I want. Unless my phone is heating up or acting weird I just let things run and close on their own.
