HTC Inspire Battery Experiences...

Speaking of battery life, have you guys seen a big change after the update? I sure did! Even using the phone very little (no calls and about 30 minutes total internet/email usage) I'm scraping by on about 30% after about 16 hrs of on-time. That's not a big deal, but it really is because before the update I was seeing about 50% remaining charge for the same usage. I even pulled the battery just to make sure I didn't have some thirsty app running in the background, but no change...

Hm. I haven't noticed a change in my battery life.

. . . the most I'm getting out of it is 6 hours, I'm wondering what else I can do.

I got up this morning and unplugged my phone and turned it on around 6:45 am. I answered two text messages and listened to one voice mail. I then went to church. Used my phone to read the scripture during service. Received two voice mails during church. Called my friend after church and talked to her for maybe 15 minutes. By 1:30 this afternoon, I was down to the 10% battery warning. I turned it off, charged it all afternoon to 100%. I just made another 15 minute phone call, listened to two voice mails, and I'm almost at 50%. According to the phone's battery use information, it has been 11h 17m since it was unplugged (I unplugged it about an hour ago), and the phone has been awake for a little over 5 hours.

For settings:
Wifi - off - unless I want to stream movies or music - haven't been able to do that much because of the battery
Bluetooth - off unless I'm driving
Mobile Data - it's set on, but it's my understanding that JD enables and disables this - however, I do have a widget on my home screen so that I can disable it, as well as the wifi and bluetooth
Display - not sure how you tell the percentage, but I have it so dark that nobody else can read it but me (I've got pretty good eyesight for an old woman *smile*)
Screen timeout - 30 seconds
Flash LED for notifications
Background data on
Auto-sync off
GPS - off
I'm running Juice Defender Ultimate on Advanced mode

In the time that it took me to type this, the battery has drained even more and I'll be getting the 20% warning very soon. It drains even when I'm not using it.

Mysterious . . .

I have very similar settings on my Inspire. I unplugged it at 8am this morning, and now at midnight it is showing about 65% battery. I have made several phone calls, checked voice-mails, lots of texts back and forth, checked my email throughout the day, read news feeds throughout the day, surfed the web, played Angry Birds, played my jewels game. This is typical usage, and I plug it in at bed time with nearly always more than 50% battery after 16 to 18 hours unplugged.

Wi-fi always on, mobile always off except sometimes away from home or work if I need it, GPS off, Bluetooth off, Display maybe 30% bright, live thunderstorm wallpaper, always manually switch off display when finished. Right now I am showing 5 bars H+ at home - do not know about work signal. I tried leaving the mobile on all day Saturday, and ended the day with maybe 40% battery.

I don't think my usage is different from many light/medium users. How other phones are dying after 5 hours essentially doing nothing is a puzzle.
I don't know if I am just lucky, or if there is a magic setting . . .

Onmitsu.

Update:
Phone charged all night and the light was green when unplugged this morning. I spent 11 minutes checking e-mail and CNN (no videos) and after exiting back to the home screen, reported battery life was "80". Yup, I ran the battery down 20% in 11 minutes checking the news . I then drove to work which takes 35 minutes and by then the battery was... still at 80%. Something's definitely going on... I'm thinking a bad battery.

A bit interesting is that when I went into About Phone > Battery > Battery Status, it was reporting a full 10-bars of battery capacity even though the front screen said 80%. Who knows... just more of the wonderful quirks of Android.

Hmmm, okay, might be onto something. I'm using Simi Clock, which is really cool, but they may have broken it during the last update. It was showing 80% battery life and I turned off the battery display, confirmed it was gone, then turned it right back on. Battery life went from 80% to 94%. It's a miracle! So maybe this is a non-issue.

My battery life has INCREASED tremendously after the update. Couldn't be happier.

Thanks for posting about your battery life and the update.

Far too many people like to bitch and moan when they could be learning about the way Android operates, their specific phone in particular and how to optimize it.

Out of the box they are in the default mode. What most people don't realize because they are too quick to criticize, is that there is a lot one can do to not only increase battery life but improve overall performance as well.

Each and every one of my phones I have spent a few hours with a little at a time, getting them setup to my liking. It's a one time thing, your learn a lot and have the satisfaction of having made a difference.

I haven't met an Android I don't like yet, just some are a bit better than others ha..ha...ha...:D

My battery life is horrible. I do not have any apps installed besides facebook and Angry Birds and do not have anything set to auto sync. I had 50% last night when I went to bed. When I got up this morning it was dead. I have messed around with the settings a lot and nothing seems to make a difference since the update. My Blackberry with Facebook, My Point and Weather Bug installed would last almost two days. I had Angry Farm on it as well. What gives.

I used a several BlackBerrys' over a period of about three years. They are the best email / messaging phone ever. One of my favorites was the original Bold with it's large keyboard. Since I handle 30 to 40 work emails per day, a touch screen is a real pain, unless you have Swype.

Anyway to your question about battery life, you absolutely in no way can compare any BlackBerry to other smartphones with larger power hungry displays and operating systems that require more power. Everything is a compromise and when you have a huge 4.0" or larger display that really eats into the run times of the battery.

That said, there is always a possibility that you have a bad phone. They are mass produced and cannot all be perfect. I would give some thought to having it looked at or exchanging it, depending on how old it is.

After the first few days of 15% to 100% charge cycles my battery life improved a lot (which I think is normal for these types of batteries).

I have been happy with the battery life, if I am not using the phone I have wifi off and just use my network data plan... if I am surfing around I enable wifi.

I get just about 1 1/2 to 2 days time with moderate use.

I have no idea if the latest update did anything to my battery.

What kind of apps do you have installed?

I have had my phone for 4 days. I found this site base on how poorly my battery has been performing. I have tried all of the tips on this site and others. Unfortunately my battery drains very fast. I can have everything off and it still drains. I dont use GPS when at home and work I use wifi. Today I charged until full while a work left watched youtube for about 1 hour via mobile data and when I checked my phone I was at 75 percent. It’s been about the same no matter what I do to help. I have tried with everything off and still nothing. I monitor running services and keep background data off. Nothing has worked for me. I'm calling HTC today to try and get a new battery. I love this phone but I can’t put up with how poorly my battery is right now. It’s funny how different the experiences have been for different people, and how some don’t believe the experiences of others. I have had enough technology in my life to know there are no constants, which is why we check these forums.

I am hope when I get my new battery I will have some of the success others have had. 17 hours would be great. I read a review where the person said he got 3 days out of it playing on it and taking pictures. I would just take 1 day.

It is really odd, the battery use seems to fluctuate.. like I said above, I had no issues, I could go all day with moderate use and be fine... then one day, the battery drained really fast when I didn't use it often at all.

So, I have no idea, I just keep a charger at my desk at work, a car charger, and charge when I sleep... so IF I do end up with a low battery... I just charge it, no big deal.

I called HTC and they told me I should take my phone back to where I got it since it was so new. They also said that they had not had a lot of complaints about poor battery issues on this phone. We both agreed it could be because no one is calling.

The HTC rep suggested that I do a "Manual reset" which is take the battery out for more than 20 or 30 seconds. Next I should try a factory reset. If neither of those work than I should take it back. I was really hoping for them to send me a new battery. I have personalized it so much I don’t feel like going back to square one. Hopefully it’s better today I drained the battery all the way down last night, (took about 7 hours) turned it off and charged it until 100% hopefully training of the battery works.

I took mine back last night for poor battery and not very good signal and the one they exchanged it for is not any better . I do tech support for a gaming console manufacture and if someone asks if something is a know issues the response is always going to be no. So even if the battery issue is a known issue they are not going to tell you that.
On a side note I think At&t jumped the gun on the 4g thing and should only be selling these phones in areas where reception is good. a small town with mountains around it is not an ideal market for these phones but they seem to be selling a lot of them.

When I talked to customer support she stated the phone should last 15 days when on but not touched. I set my phone down today it was at 90% took a long nap 5 hours later without being touched it was at 72%. It will not make it 2 days at that pace

Wow... when I leave mine on standby when I go to sleep, it is dead by the time I wake up 8 hours later.

Either she is smoking something, or she is just going by the standby time stated in the specs. I do not think anyone here can tell you that their phone will last 15 days of standby.

I have finally gone further than Orlando area with this phone, and I can certainly say that reception is the main culprit when it comes to battery power.

To give you an idea, if you look at a map, I live in the zip code 32828. As you can see, a pretty busy area if you chose to look. I work in zip 32751...much worse reception. Battery drains faster.

This weekend, I visited a smaller town, in the middle of nowhere...34974. This poor phone struggled, and I even shut off the mobile network almost entirely.

I also ended up on the Florida coast, in Stuart FL....not sure of the zip here. Could only get minimal service there, and the ratio to service vs. battery life was fairly consistent.

This does bring me to another point, I rarely get good service out of this phone, even in larger areas like Stuart, Orlando (32828), and hardly anything in Maitland (32751). I can understand the smaller town, but my service vs. my family's service on their phone sitting side by side is significantly different.

If I was in a smaller area, I could understand, but not the places I am at. I wonder if the antenna in my equipment isn't as good as it should be?

My battery life is still ok, just thought I'd share, since some of you mentioned radio and signal being a major issue, and it really showed this weekend.
