Viewing rented market movies on an HDMI display shows a red "X" on screen

FYI...I rented a movie just to test it. It plays great on the XOOM, I really like the interface BUT when you try HDMI out on the movie to try to watch it on a bigger screen, you just get a big red 'X' on the screen (it does play video though).

So, any thoughts of watching (or finishing) a movie that you rented on the XOOM on your HDMI equipped TV at home or at the hotel, no dice!

Where did you rent the movie from? Amazon movies on demand?

3.1 gives users movies to rent in the market. its only avail to 3G users. wifi users will get a patch in the coming days/weeks... you can see the movie tab if you view the market from a computer.

Haven't tried yet, but was curious, when you rent the movie, does it ask you if you want to stream or download it? So you can watch it offline?

1. I rented from the market tab (I have a 3G model)
2. Danny: I wish I had looked about being able to download vs stream. It gave the standard warning about the rental was good for 30days but only 24 hours once I started watching.

Quality was very good though.

I turned off my wifi and tried to watch. It to,d me there was no connection, so apparently it is stream only...bummer.

No you can watch offline- can't tell you how off the top of my head, but you can.

It has been reported almost everywhere concerned that off line viewing is/will be possible.

I can't wait! Still to get 3.1 for my wi-fi Xoom in the UK. Movies off line will be excellent for travelling

Yes. I have been using mVideoPlayer prior to this. When playing ripped files through that program on my Xoom over HDMI, I get video and sound...no red X!

I don't know where to find the keynotes...they tell how to do a non-streaming rental? Any chance they let us in on making one play over HDMI?

As a side note, within the same "videos" app, at the top there is a personal videos tab which contains my ripped files. They play fine so the problem is coded within the rental itself.

I thought I read HDMI output uses HDCP when the videos app is playing. So that wouldn't be a concern. Plus raw video over HDMI is quite large. I think 1080p is somewhere north of 3GB per second. Not entirely sure of that number. But it isn't that easy to copy that.
