Samsung GS2 VS Motorola Atrix

Here in the UK, Orange shops are advertising full window posters with the Motorola Atrix as a 2 GHz Smart-phone, Their claim is "the most powerful smart-phone in the world" useing their maths that means ours can over clock at 3GHZ or as standard its 2.4GHz what marketing BS, very misleading.

No 8mp camera, no full 1080p video, only has Android 2.2

Glad I did my research.

haha wut?
actually, it sounds like they're advertising it as 2Ghz single core when what it really is is 1Ghz dual-core. doesn't sound like they're referring to overclocking at all.

but if you wanna just add up the cores, it would be
Atrix - 2Ghz
SGS2 - 2.4Ghz

Lol got me or their maths wrong yes I should have said 2.4.
The over clocking was something I added to bolster up the specs.
But what really got me was them saying "The most powerful smart-phone in the world"

ahh i see :)
with some tweaking it's pretty far up there. but out of the box and un-rooted, not by a long shot.

at the end of the day both phones are awesome. I got the GS2 but would jealous if any of my mates had the Atrix with the dock. only reason I went for samsung is the 2 yr warranty vs motos 1yr

The only thing Atrix got over SGSII is webtop dock. Otherwise SGSII wins by long shot.

webtop dock... really???
did they drop the price of it or something. because last i heard, most people were outraged that it cost as much as a standalone laptop.

def not something i would go for. maybe that's just me, though.

I have them both.

The Galaxy S II is far superior in every area.

The Atrix is the one Android I've had out of over 12 new phones this year, that is just not very good. It's disappointing at best.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to all the talk about processors. Not because it doesn't matter, but rather because we are just getting into using dual core. There is an awfully lot of marketing hype surrounding these as the chip makers want to sell them.

It's very well known that the Samsung GS 2 has a very fast dual core CPU yet I can tell you first hand, that while it's certainly not slow, it's not as fast as they would have you believe.

In fact I've actually got three of these, as I bought two for friends. All three are running at the exact same speed, so it's not like one is defective. You've got to have a very balanced system to get the most out of a dual core processor.

Contrary to popular belief smartphone technology is not quite up to maximizing the full speed capabilities of the current crop of dual core processors (yet).

If you choose the GS2, you will be very satisfied and quite impressed :)

Cheers :)

well said.

yeah i find it funny now that Android as an OS has a little catching up to do. i'm thinking Ice Cream will bring a lot more speed to dual-core devices. more so than FroYo to Gingerbread.

Oh yes I forgot the webtop dock, looks very nice.

However a point I was unsuccessfully trying to make  was I get annoyed at all misleading advertising and feel sorry for people who don't do proper comparisons or research befor purchasing products.

Thanks All.

Which popular belief is this? lol I'm always on the net and read tones of forums and Android news blogs (AF, XDA, AC, Phandroid, Android Police etc etc) and EVERYONE around here/there knows that the dual cores aren't being 100% utilized with Froyo and GB. I mean Froyo has some capabilities of dual threadings and GB more so. Until ICS (ice cream sandwich) is released, dual cores just a marketing hype.

I think ICS will fully utilize the dual cores. Honeycomb (HC) already utilize it and ICS is a marriage between GB and HC. So it only makes sense that ICS fully utilize the dual core processors ;)

Yeah...their mareketers really don't know much about the phones they are promoting >_>;; That's beyond misleading!

No one has mentioned the reason I returned my Atrix to AT&T: The locked bootloader and required Motoblur account.
No, you don't need a Motoblur account to use the Atrix. I bypassed the motoblur sign in when I started using my Atrix. Rooted and froze everything blur related.

No 8mp camera

FWIW, 8mp vs. 5MP isn't really an issue for a camera phone. I'd prefer improved senors, better flash systems, upgraded optics, and _good_ camera software.

A 5MP shot would still let you print a nice 8x10" photo.

The main problems with the Atrix camera was so-so optics/sensors and +terrible+ camera firmware. I experimented with some 3rd party options, but wound up returning it before I found a decent solution.

agreed. i wish that was the area where manufacturers concentrated more.
most people still don't realize that the MP doesn't necessarily dictate the quality of the photo lol

I don't understand people's obsession with higher MP. If you don't do much photo editing, 5MP is find for 4X6 (or 8x10) photos; which is what most people normally print. Photos still look good with 5pm.

More MP means the picture is bigger; 5mp is around 60mb which is already too big to email it to someone.

If you're into editing and photoshoping, whould it not be better to use a dedicated SLR (or even a pocket) camera?

I agree wtih DT that OEMs need to pick up the slack on sensors/flash/optics/softwares. Upping the MP doesn't do much for picture quality. And that's the complaint most people have, picture quality on their phone. But higher MP does not equate to better pictures, just bigger pictures with the same (blah) quality.

I have to disagree with your MP comment. Yes It would be better to upgrade the lens or censer, However when I upgraded from my Nikon D70s (DSLR)@6MP to my new Nikon D80(DSLR) at 10MP While still using the same lenses the difference was very noticeable, No more washed out grey looking pictures much more vivid colours, Also I found this with My new SGS2, Much less grey washout. It is also nice to zoom in to things you didn't notice when taking the shot, the higher the pixels the more detail when zooming in.
Also higher MP is needed when viewing images on a high resolution monitor instead of up-scaling.

When looking closely at pictures taken with small cameras and mobile phone cameras lower pixels give more of what i call a Monet impressionist effect, (very noticeable on sea and foliage)The higher the MP the more you have to zoom in to see this Monet impressionist effect. Where the lower the pixels I can see it right away.

Go to dpreview.com chose any small camera and zoom in to see this effect. then chose a higher MP and see the difference.

Sorry I went off on one a bit.

I dont understand where folks are getting it that you have to sign in to Blur to use a current phone with Blur.

Maybe its based on older phones with Blur. You didnt have to do this with the Droid X and 2 either.

not trying to be a know it all or anything, but i'm pretty sure the D70/80 have two different sensors.
D70 - APS-C (23.7 x 15.5 mm)
D80 - APS-C (23.6 x 15.8 mm)

and making a jump from 6.0 to 10.0 (effective pixels) means different sensor as well. so while you were using the same lenses with a higher MP count, the difference came from the sensors i'm afraid.

however, the "Monet impressionist effect" does have a lot to do with effective pixels. still, though, the sensor has lots more to do with the over all clarity over MP :)

i don't know a whole lot about photography/cameras. my brother is the expert in that area. but i believe this is correct.
