Hi all, first post. I want to root my 2.1 OTA Eris. The subject is a little foggy to me on this forum. I'm a novice to rooting admittedly. It seems that rooting an Eris thats running 2.1 OTA is possible if your HBOOT is 1.47 or lower and should root the same as 1.5. Mine is 1.46 so I think I'm good to go. I was wondering if anyone has used Universal AndRoot? It looks TOO easy and that worries me. Any ideas on how to successfully accomplish this root would be greatly appreciated. Also...some OS recommendations for Eris would help too. Thanks in advance for the help!

You can do it this way if you wish, but that is no longer necessary. The Eris can be rooted while running 1.5 or 2.1, all from the device itself, even if HBOOT is 1.49.0000.

I was wondering if anyone has used Universal AndRoot? It looks TOO easy and that worries me. Any ideas on how to successfully accomplish this root would be greatly appreciated. Also...some OS recommendations for Eris would help too. Thanks in advance for the help!

I STRONGLY prefer the Universal Root for Dummies, in this thread: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html

It is extremely well documented and illustrated, and written with a novice rooter in mind, in my opinion

There is also an app in the market that will root with 1-click and give you the same result. (It's here.) I still suggest the Dummies method, though.

While this may seem as if you are doing a lot, both of those methods will install a replacement custom Recovery image - the phone's software that you will actually use to install a custom ROM, backup and restore the state of your phone, etc. - that requires a working trackball. One of the major problems that plagues the Eris is a trackball that stops working properly, so I also recommend that you use the the steps in this thread to install a version of Amon_RA Recovery that does not require the trackball. It may save some headaches later on, and it uses the same Gscript Lite app that you will use in the Universal Root for Dummies thread. So, after you root, and even after installing your first ROM, run through Scenario 3 in that thread.

And, if I can be so bold, I also recommend that, rather than sticking with stock, that you consider installing the custom ROM xtrSENSE 5.0.1. The fourth post in the Universal Root for Dummies thread will walk you through the procedure to install your first custom ROM, if you wish, and I suggest that it be xtrSENSE, which will fix a lot of the problems with stock Eris software while retaining the exact functionality that you are accustomed to with stock. I have been rooted for almost exactly a year now, have tried many, many custom ROMs, including ones running Froyo and Gingerbread, but I am now back to running xtrSENSE for good. The darned thing just works.

If you follow the steps to do a Nandroid backup in the Universal Root thread, you can always go back to what you have now. Also, skip the step to "Wipe data/factory reset" if you install xtrSENSE - it should install right over stock, keeping your apps and settings, while giving you a lot more space for apps and data, and an overclocked CPU while the phone is busy (to give much better performance) and underclocked when you are not using the phone (to save battery life.)

not really anything else to add. the one click app does work, and is easy. its what i first used to root my eris. if you do decide to use it,defiantely still read thru the rooting for dummies thread,as it will provide alot of invaluable info on how to backup, flash roms, etc., after you are rooted(starting in post 4).

one thing that confused me when i first got into this was references to placing things "on the root of the SD card" maybe im a dummie for not knowing what "root" is,but after some searching i found "root" simply ="top level, not inside any other folders". if you allready knew this youre allready one step ahead of me when i rooted :D

last and not least, after rooting, sooner rather than later, check out this thread: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html and get the trackball optional recovery installed. its great insurance youll still be able to do what you need to do if your trackball ever stops working(a common prollem on the eris)

good luck and have fun :)

Please do update, I've been debating Rooting my Eris, but I'm a little paranoid. I'm wanting more memory and to stop those stupid factory crap from starting up every time.

I say don't debate it just do it and don't look back ;). Like doogald said, xtrSense is an excellent ROM that will still give you the look and feel you are accustomed too but once you start using it you'll wish you did it a long time ago :). If you have any questions or troubles along the way you can always get plenty of assistance and info from the great bunch of people here. They are always ready and willing to help you out and won't steer you in the wrong direction. :D

I should also note that there is a way to flash a custom ROM that unroots the phone and puts stock Eris 2.1 software back on the device. You can try rooting and, if it's not for you, go back to stock if you wish (though you will probably need to reset everything in stock from scratch).

Did the root for Dummies and it was very easy to follow. I've now flashed 3 roms and settled on Ginger Taz V27. :D It's been very stable and the phone is snappy. Picchic take your time and go though the steps one by one and you'll find its really easy. I have about 90mb of internal memory free and all my apps are on my SD card. Makes a huge difference in the phone.

Thanks everyone for the advice!
