Help Upgrade from Desire now? Or wait?

Okay I have had my HTC Desire for about 8 months now, I do like it and it does do everything I need it to do but I cant help thinking its getting a little old and left behind due to all the new Dual-core phones such as the Samsung Galaxy SII and HTC Sensation. Even the other newer HTCs like the Incredible S make my Desire feel quite last year if you know what I mean.

My contract is up at the end of January 2012, and the new 2012 phones won't be out till after Mobile World Congress 2012. So my question is, should I wait and upgrade when there are new phones out when I can upgrade (which would mean keeping my Desire for another 11 months on top of the 8 I have already had it, and it will get even older in that time), or should I get a new phone like a Sensation now, have that for the 11 months then take my upgrade in 2012 too?

This may seem like a really silly question but I am liking all the new phones lol and it's making mine feel dated!
So should I get a new phone now as well or can you guys persuade me that the Desire is still awesome and to save my money and upgrade in 2012?

So, Desire does all you need, but you still want a new phone?
There will be some that will update their phones to Sensation/SGS2, but I don't see much added value.

I'm keeping mine, because it does all I need and the abundance of custom ROMs ensures continuous fun with it.
In 6 months, Android ICS is going to be released probably together with Nexus 3. If the rumors are right, it will have a Tegra 3 on it, which will blow Sensation/SGS2 out of the water.

also, I got my desire when the Desire HD was out but I decided to get the Desire because it's cheaper and a smaller size. But I can't help thinking I should of got the desire HD so it wouldn't feel as old as this one does - do you think I should of got the Desire HD instead of the Desire?

I've been pondering this one myself.

And I think the answer really depends on what you want from a phone.
Because if you want the very latest thing just for the sake of it, then the Desire is old in that regard and you should probably upgrade.
But unless you have bags of money which allows you to upgrade all the time, I'm not sure it's worth it. There isn't much choice of what to upgrade to in my opinion.

For me, I'm annoyed about the Desire's poor internal memory, battery and it's inability to play Gameloft games due to the multitouch bug. Performance wise though, it's fine.
And it still does everything I need, and I still love it.

I'm not going to fork out

That's a good way of thinking of it. I suppose actually, the dual cores really don't offer much advantage software wise.

Although, I do like the idea of HDMI mirroring, and the better cameras etc.

And the spotify thing is awful. I used to be a loyal user. Then they brought in 5 plays and 10 hours a month. Bye! I'm off to grooveshark. Not as good, but I'm not paying. The whole point for me was to listen to music for free on the computer, if I liked it buy it legally on amazon mp3 and put it on my phone. Apparently, that isn't allowed anymore.

Are the cameras that much better though? More megapixels sure, but I haven't seen any comparison shots between the Sensation and Desire. Might be a bit better in low light as there's a dual flash, but I'd be surprised if it's much better in good lighting conditions.

I listened to spotify for free for a little bit then decided it was good enough to pay for! Can't really beat

No reviews of the sensation just yet, so can't say. But the galaxy S2 shots look excellent. Much better than the Desire IMO.

It's a good deal, but its not for me. I like to actually own music, not just stream it. If I could download it all and keep it for

We need a hybrid phone with Samsung's hardware, HTC's build quality and HTC's software

One of the major benefits of paying for Spotify is that you can have offline playlists on your device and listen without having to stream. No stuttering etc. I've got hundreds of offline songs on my Desire and hook it up to my car radio when I'm driving, well worth the money Not sure what happens if you cancel your subscription though, presumably you won't be able to listen to the songs anymore.

In other words you can download it all and keep it for

My only problem with the Nexus S is the unexpandable storage. If I was told I had to buy a device today, there's a good chance that's what I'd choose. Dual cores will be more important when there are more of them - I'll bet that most software doesn't take advantage of this yet (in which case, by the time it does there will be more, newer devices).

The reason I didn't wait for the HD was primarily size, and having used one I feel quite sure I called that right, so I have no DHD envy at all. The Desire S feels really nice to me, but from the experience of my friend who owns one it seems to offer no advantage in battery, be a bit weak in WiFi reception, and of course has the locked bootloader.

For me that last is the bottom line - if I am locked into using just what is provided for me, the device will "become old" a lot quicker than if I can mod it to my tastes or needs. So right now, my Desire isn't old

Edit: Not sure this really belongs in "support and troubleshooting" - I'd have thought the general Desire forum, where it started, was better.

I agree entirely with this post, except about memory - I don't need more than 16GB.

Really, my problem is that I just want a device pretty much identical to my Desire for the time being, just with better battery, having fixed the internal memory issue, along with a strong dev community. Trouble is, I would have to fork out

The storage space is not a problem and there are ways to fix it.
There are different solutions: some prefer custom MTDs, some data2sd, and I prefer optimizing memory based on app2sd+. I have about 125 apps with 257MB free, which makes it no problem to go on installing huge amount of apps.

Thanks for all your imput guys. I guess you are right, It doesn't feel old in the fact that I have a gingerbread Custom ROM and S-OFF, and apps2sd as well so yeah I guess im good with this ill probably upgrade next year

If its a contract upgrade though, they only let you upgrade when they are satisfied you have paid for the handset.

So if they're letting you upgrade and you're not going to, you're paying for the handset again.

If that is the case either upgrade or drop to a sim only tariff

Thanks for that info SUroot... I guess you are right, I would be paying for the handset again... I will upgrade as soon as I can most likely, but if I cant I will go SIM only till I do upgrade to something thats more worth it.

You could upgrade to the most expensive handset and sell it too. if you get enough money you can put it aside until what you want is available.

Yeah thats a good idea Dan. What about if in January 2012, rather than upgrade I'll cancel my contract, use SIM only and wait until like April when there is something available that I want and then start a new contract with that new phone... Would orange let me start up a new contract after cancelling my previous one 3 months previously?

I'm not sure on Orange.

On O2 they have a 1 month rolling sim only contract so at the end of your contract you can drop to that then change the tariff to a new one.

Maybe Orange do something like that?

Maybe its worth having a word with Carphone Warehouse at upgrade time as they can offrer unbranded handsets on your existing contract as an upgrade.

Well yes of course, but you will need to go through all the credit checks etc all over again.
