Okay everyone it seems like there's been a 50/50 answer to this question and Yes I have searched many times.

If possible please do not reply unless you are 99.9% certain of the information you are providing.

I just got the droid with only 250 Text messages as I am expecting the AIM app to use data just like the Iphone.(coming from 3gs to Droid)

Do all aim apps in the aim store counts as data and not sms. I know if someone sends a message through aim using your mobile number (ex.+1423999999) that would count as a SMS message.

If you are using the AIM app as your SN will each message sent/recieve count as SMS?

What are some good Aim apps? (stays online in the background, etc.)

:D

Thank you!!!!

didn't fully answered my question, but

-Have you notice if they charge you one text/sms per message you send/recieve through the service/app?

-This is found in the android market? or somewhere on the web?

-These apps let you stay on aim over 24 hrs unless you sign out,run in background, etc.?

Thanks I get my DROID tomorrow and I only have 250 messages selected, because I was hoping it was like the 3gs with the messaging through programs like beejive, aim, etc. and every IM sent/recieve was not charged as a text/sms.

-Meebo is not charging for texts, it's runs on the data plan. That's why I suggested it. ;)

-Found on the Android market, free of charge

-I'm not sure how long it stays on, I don't use it but when I want to get a hold of someone or am bored and not near a computer

I too have been searching around for a good IM application.
From all the ones I've checked out ebuddy looks to be the most appealing.

OK, I'm starting to get worried here. I thought I'd give ebuddy a try so I clicked the link and used Barcode Scanner to download it. It successfully scanned the code but then it says there is no such app in the market. I did a manual search and it gave me the same error. This is what seems to be happening with all Droid Eris owners with a few apps. Slacker, PhoneMyPC, now this. What is going on here? Did Verizon gimp the Eris?

Restart your phone, or download Advanced Task Killer (a must have anyway) and quit the market, then reopen it. When I had my Hero and I would search apps, they would sometimes not come up. I would get "found 18 results" on the top and on the middle of the screen it'd say something about how it couldn't find anything and that I should broaden my search. Usually quitting the market/rebooting my phone fixed this problem. Over time it just went away all together.

Does anyone know of an SMS program that sends and receives texts as data? I think I remember reading that Handcent SMS sends out texts as data, but I don't know if it also receives them that way as well.

Thanks
I'm sure this isn't true, and I'm not even sure it's possible. The best thing you can do is sign up for Google Voice, tell everyone to use that number, and _don't_ have Voice forward SMS messages to your Verizon/TMobile number. Then, use Google Voice and only Google Voice for messages.

Holy old thread Batman!

To answer the question, pony up $12 a year for the Pro version of Trillian. With that you'll get ad-free messaging on the PC and mobile devices, continuous IM (IMs start on the phone, history syncs to other devices), centralized history (stored on their servers hence the need for a sub.).

I use Trillian, LOVE it.

I use trillian as well, but found it kept waking me up/bugging me when I didn't want to chat when someone would FB me, AIM me or google talk me. I'd love to keep using it if there was an easy on/off function, but I couldn't find one, and it's just enough trouble to open and connect/close and disconnect the app constantly that it's not really useful for me.
