Ram questions...

New to smartphones, and android... just got the X2. Now I've loaded it up with a bunch of good stuff, and am wondering if I'm doing something to make it go slow. I just task killer, check the task manager, but the only thing taking up a lot is Launcher pro, yet I only have a working 43 mb free... out of 500 right?

Handscent takes like 5 or more seconds to load every time. Sometimes widgets take a moment to appear. What's slowing me down? The other things I've downloaded are games and basic apps (facebook and news, etc). How can I speed shit up?

The phone isn't supposed to have 100s of MBs of free RAM, that is not the point of RAM, it is designed to be used and have programs waiting to be launched, IF the OS needs to load a new program it will kill whatever is used least to make room.

Task Killer is most likely slowing it down and killing programs the phone wants/needs open and ergo is making the phone slower by taking up CPU resources to start it over and over again.

P.S. Faster loading = stuff in RAM, my bet is Task Killer is killing all the apps in RAM and then the phone reloads them just to have them killed off again. You are fighting your phones natural RAM allocation...

Android 2.2 and above loads stuff up like this. gTablet has 512mb and Tegra 2. Fast device with higher res display and still fast.

It kind of did. Things seem to be running smoother. I thought the point of task killer was supposed to speed up the phone..?

I personally am a fan of Advanced Task Killer and usually average about 50M free without killing apps. I don't see any lag on my device.

The only reason it became popular is because the HTC people had to use every little program they could to squeeze a little of battery life out of the Inc's.

If all apps played nice and adhered to dev guidelines, I would agree 100%.

this phone has a major memory leak problem on this os, after a day or two without a reboot it starts working VERY VERY slowly, but after a fresh reboot it scream.....

The good news is Android does not have the same type of general kernel level memory leak like Windows Mobile did.

The issue with Android are apps that do not adhere to guidelines and these are the apps that make task killers handy sometimes, but even then do not fix the issue all the time.

The issue is more to do with the apps/OS, rather than the device. My G1, Droid 1 and Incredible all faired better with a once every few day restart. Especially the Incredible.

Added: The net result is a resource level leak, none the less- with the OS.
