Root Pre and Post Rooting Questions

So the DX2 is going to be my very first Android phone (can't wait to use my BB Storm for target practice), and I've been reading up on rooting.

It seems like a very neat idea, as I love having full control over my electronic devices and not being held back by DRM and bloatware. The concept and the actual rooting process look rather straightforward. I don't think I'll need any help with that. I suppose I'm looking more at the post rooting phase of the DX2 than anything, though I do have one pre root question.

My only pre root question is do I need to activate my phone before rooting? Or I suppose another way of posing the question would be which saves me the most time/headache, activating my phone before or after the rooting process?

From what I've read, Gingerbreak is easy and painless to use, so no questions on that.

After I root the phone, what should I do next? Will my phone be able to work with the Verizon network with no issues immediately after being rooted, or will I need to tweak the phone a little? I hear that grabbing BusyBox and Titanium Backup are two apps that should be installed ASAP. Are there any other all important apps that I should get?

Looking ahead, what are some long term issues that can happen from rooting? (I'm not worried about the void warranty if unrooting it takes care of that problem). What will happen when 2.3 is released for the DX2 while the phone is rooted? I've heard that Verizon and several other telecommunication aren't too pleased with rooting because of tethering. Is there any speculation that they might try to crack down on rooters?

Yes you have to activate it before you can do anything else to the device.

I haven't tweaked anything, even left the bloatware and it works great. Highest Quadrant Score (benchmark) that I've ever gotten or seen before.

To be honest never cared enough to use with. What I would recommend is either Wireless Tether or Barnacle WiFi so that you can get Wireless hotspot for free.

If you bring it in rooter to Verizon for service it can void your warranty, but Ginger Break will unroot the device for you.

You will probably loose Root and/or have to re-root. Also you may have to unroot first.

Why would they like you to use your internet connection any way you want for Free. How dare you! lol! But seriously, they could but I've only heard of AT&T cracking down right now. Also, as of right now, when the new YouTube video renting service is released for FroYo in the coming days it will look to see if you are rooted and won't let view rented movies due to DRM issues. I'm guess other Apps could put these restrictions in as well to protect their content.

I never cared when there was an OTA update with my D1. There are already ROMS with gingerbread for the D1 and I doubt an official release ever comes out for it. So, when you are rooted, the ROM you choose to run will likely be far ahead of the official release OTA updates and you have no reason to WANT it to update. If you want the OTA, just unroot.

I was just lurking but couldn't help but chime in on this one. Yes you want to get Titanium Backup. You'll also want to get the paid version. You have to have the free version installed for the paid version to work. ZeroOveride your the first person I've read that don't use it. There are so many things you can do with Titanium Backup. Also TiB also has busybox so you don't have to get that sepretly. I would be interested in a dx2 cause of the dual core but a locked bootloader is a deal breaker for me. Just saying.

I downloaded it to give it a try. I've always used Astro for App backup and stuff.
