Help Running Services Part II

I asked this question earlier, but the person didn't answered it right or I asked it wrong. When I turn my Charge on I make sure no applications are running, however when I press the settings button and press applications then press " running services " all these strange things are running that are not apps. For example they are titled SecPhoneService, PVWmdrmService, etc. what are these?? Do they use up battery life if running and what happens if I stop them ?? I really haven't been using my phone a lot and the battery seems to go fast. Please don't answer this question telling me to use a task killer this is something different from apps running. Again... what are these " running services ? "

Lots of applications are not necessarily running all the time but may have processes that run to "listen" for certain things that signal the app to start up. Lots of messaging processes for SMS and e-mail, sync processes, location services, you'll even see some that are for the touch screen keyboard that the operating system keeps running. Kind of like how you can stop every application running on your computer but the O/S will keep many processes active. The easiest comparison would be to go into task manager on a windows machine and shut down every application that shows running until the application tab is empty. Then switch to the tab that shows running processes and you'll still see LOTS of them running. Unless you know exactly what each one does, you probably don't want to kill these off. Hope that makes some sense!!

I understood correctly and answered correctly. The person above is correct as well. Those things you see running are "system apps" which you cant really kill them unless you have root then you can freeze them but of course you dnt wanna freeze the wrong ones and get ya phone messed up. So the answer is the same as in part 1. With a task killer you can kill those but they start up again right after killing them..or root and freeze them. I been doing this a while so yea i know you can kill those "system apps" with a task killer but its better off to root then freeze the ones you know you dont need.

PVMtpServiceStart and PVWmdrmService are related to Digital Rights Management for the blockbuster app.

Task killers are iffy at best. I had to let my wife use my Dinc as her Devour (Talk about a crap phone ) Took a dump. She said certain things wouldnt run on the Dinc. I said you have ATK on the phone dont you? I told her not to put it on the phone. She said but it works. I said the app isnt running. Its just freezing and going back to the home screen. So I deleted the ATK and restarted the phone and now everything works like it should. So I have seen first hand as the trouble ATK's can cause.


Best option is to root and just delete the bloat for good. SO I agree with your last sentence about rooting and freezing.

That's the route I took... that is, deleting what I felt I didn't need.

How does deleting the app file(s) differ from freezing? What exactly is meant by freezing versus deleting, or is that really just different terminology for the same?

Freezing is like stopping the program from running period. People will freeze stuff to see if the phone has a problem not having that service running. If the phone behaves bad you can unfreeze it.

Deleting it is just that its gone and if you delete the wrong thing your screwed. Why devs say freeze it and see how your phone acts before deleting it.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I inferred. How is freezing done, is there a tool/app needed or is it something at the filesystem level, etc?

Download ANTEK APP ROOT its free and theres a paid version...this app will let you freeze, unfreeze and delete if you want.

the blockbuster app if you have it will. dont know about the rest.

These are the apps i freezed that freed up memory and has made my battery life a little bit better: vzw apps, blockbuster, lets golf 2, vzw navigation, amazon kilndle, bitbop, city id, daily briefing, dual clock, feeds and updates, google search, guided tours, homescreen tips, IM, media hub, rhapsody, rockband, slacker radio, swype, task manager, think free office, tune wiki, vcast media manager, voice dialer, voicemail, weather bug clock, buddies now and vvm services..of course some of these apps i froze i got replacements like i froze voicemail because i downloaded google voicemail...so its up to you what you use and dont want to use but with these frozen on my phone it has increased ram, rom and battery life.
