Worth upgrading from DX1?

Simply put, is it worth to use my available upgrade from my DX1 for this phone? May be too early in the game to know for sure as the DX2 is in it's infancy in users hands. Sounds like the displays are very similar, and while the DX2 benchmarks much higher, it doesn't sound like real world usage is really much different, at least not yet. Thoughts, experiences and opinions welcome.

Seeing the rumors of the 2 Moto phones that will be Tegra 3 and LTE for Q1 2012..its hard to say.

Depends when the Moto dual core, LTE phone thats supposed to come out later this year and the GS2 thats supposed to come out later this year. Depends if you wanna have LTE and maybe a FFC too.

I honestly feel those with DX1's can be a lil more patient compared to ppl with older phones like the Droid 1 and Eris. I'm running into low space warnings in my Droid 1, so I'm glad I have a DX1 right now also.

Those that never used the DX1 will appreciate the battery life, reception and call quality of the DX2 alot more than those of us with DX1's since most of us are used to it. And when GB comes to the DX1, ppl with DX1's can be even more patient. The new Blur is that much better.

Its hard to say...lol For me, if I will even be on Verizon next year, the Moto phones and GS2 will have me waiting to get LTE. I dont even care about grandfathered unlimited plans since I might not even be on Verizon next year. One might have to go retail for phones forever just to keep it, and thats even if they can keep it.

Suggest waiting for the Gingerbread update and then make your call. The resulting performance increase could buy you more comfy time to wait

I have been dealing with sucky call quality, 150mb data folder constraint and battery sucking from the 65nm chipset in my Incredible. Different for me. I would probably wait for Gingerbread if I had the DX1 and then make a call.

Good input, thanks both of you. I have been waiting for GB OTA for my DX also. I think the thing that has piqued my interest more than I expected is the DX2 actually impressing people more than I expected. Also, I need to do a clean wipe and reinstall on my DX every two or three months as things start degrading and get wonky otherwise. Which is what I will be doing today, again. Gets a little long in the tooth to do this every 3 months, but if I don't my X starts acting off. I've read that this can be a problem with the DX, so maybe it would be something that is a non-issue with the DX2. I'll probably wait for GB OTA for the DX1 anyway (which I was trying to hold off on my wipe and reinstall to do this but my DX is in need of it now), but the DX2 sounds like a really nice phone and possible worthy upgrade considering the slowness that Verizon releases new phones like the SGS2 which is really first on my list.

So, do I get a replacement DX1 if it really is acting funny? Or get one of these new phones...decision, decisions...

I'm on my 4th DX actually. 1 broken display (dropped facedown on icy ground cracking it), 1 display with backlight that went out, 1 earpiece speaker with an annoying buzz to it and the current one I'm on. I do use a case, but that didn't save me from a broken screen. I do have insurance, thankfully. All my DX's seem to get wonky after a couple months though. Like the OS slowly degrades and needs a wipe/factory reset.

Are you happy with the performance of the Droid X? The Droid X2 runs demanding games significantly faster than the Droid X does. Web browser scrolling is also much smoother. Those are the two biggest real world differences you will notice.

I've never had a smartphone, I'm eligible for an upgrade in July. I love what I've seen of the DX 2 but now I'm wondering after reading this if I should get the DX 1 for free instead of the DX2 ? Seems like a lot of the DX1 owners are quite happy with what they've got!

My take: I got an Eris instead of a original Droid early last year because I could get it for free. I quickly found myself with a phone that had been end of lifed and no longer supported. No more upgrades or anything without using custom ROMs. And the time lost waiting for the phone to do different things far outweighed the extra $$ I would have had to shell out for something faster.

DX1 owners are happy now, but if you buy one at this point, you may be looking longingly at the phones current DX1 owners are getting next year when they become upgrade eligible. And you'll still have a year left on your contract. With an end of lifed phone that doesn't have the processor needed to take advantage of the latest Android features. I'd strongly recommend you not go that route.

For it being your first smart phone, just make sure it isnt the Eris...sorry current Eris users...lol

Just try to stay in the high end, mid range area for Android smartphones. No Eris, no Ally, dont really know anything about the Vortex or Citrus. Even tho the Eris and Droid 1 came out around the same time, I feel the Droid 1 was a better phone.

Droid X original is one of the nicest smartphones ever produced. I'd still put it in the top 7 or 8 smartphones today in terms of overall quality and usability.

I think there is no compelling reason to get DX2 for DX1 owners now. DX2 looks good right now, but its novelty will quickly wear off this Fall. We will see SGSII, Bionic and dual core HTC, LG phones by then.

The X2 is very comparable to the SGSII, HTC dual cores, and the LG dual cores; They are all the same generation of phone tech. Interesting. But it's just rumor now. Not officially even mentioned though it may be in the works. I don't think they can pull it out so quick after only 3~4 months of Bionic. Probably Q2~Q3 next year is more realistic.

I think DX2 will hold its own well against HTC duals since Snapdragon 8x60 is still Cortex A8 based and doesn't show impressive muscle compared to other duals. But Tegra2 will be beaten by Exynos in SGSII and TI OMAP4 in phones like Droid 3, LG Optimus 3D. And if rumor on Tegra3 based new Moto brother phones is true, then.

1. If getting a new phone and between a free DX1 and DX2, go for the DX2, IMO. There is enough newer "stuff" to justify the $170 or so on line price.

2. Quad cores are a long time away, since cost curve for fabrication is pure evil ATM and OEMs are still gearing down single cores and ramping up duals. Earliest would be Q1, but most likely Q2 ,since OEMs need to maximize returns with dual cores and milk singles cores as long as they can, since on bottom of the cost curve.

3. Great observations on the Tegra 2 and other dual chippies, since their performance curves do not have much of a difference to worry about getting a Tegra vs a Snap, OMAP. Plus, the Tegra has had enough time to get the bugs out for OEMs and devs..... Just wish Nvidia would farm out their video codec efforts.

Had the DX2 been LTE, most folks would not even debate. Then again, we would probably all be in the Bionic forum now

Lots of good points in this thread. For me I'm starting to believe any LTE/dual core phone for verizon will be significantly delayed because LTE apparently isn't as friendly with dual core. It's why I am strongly considering getting a DX2 now instead of waiting unitl sometime this fall for the SGS2 or Targa to possibly hit on Verizon. Even if they hit, who knows what changes will have been made to make them work on Verizons network. Plus we all know how damn sloooooow Verizon is in releasing new phones. Probably 6 months behind the UK or more.

I probably should. There really isn't much my DX can't do well at this point. Maybe play dungeon defenders at highest settings smoothly. But overall it's still a very capable phone.

exactly the DX1 is still a great phone and if it does the job for you there is no reason wasting an upgrade imo

I avoid social apps, so okay for me. Not that I am unsocial, just that the apps can be hogs on the Incredible and battery drainers in general.
